I identify this record as the definitive record of its era. If she were not otherwise taken, I would agree to marry M2O in a heartbeat. I have followed her (not in the Stalker sense but just in the Huge Fan sense) since SongShip, and that's going back a while. But M20 is posolutely and absitively the greatest person this nation has ever contributed to modern music. Nothing compares to Miss America, and incidentally, you apparently missed "Apartment Hunting".
Made a point to buy her album many moons ago and never lived to regret it. Mary is just too good for the general public. One of the most under-appreciated artists in Canadian history.
Mary Margaret O'Hara is like the female equivalent to Tom Waits because of her frantic lyrical delivery in her songs, especially her Song "Not Be Alright".
Well it's a shitty world, so it's just as well that she only made one record. Better to do something wonderful and not compromise yourself than to market your ass. Maybe she just doesn't feel like making records or performing in public. She's too personal for mass consumption anyway. I feel embarrassed listening to her.
me and my buddy corey used to go my house for lunch in high school...this video came on one day and , no word of a lie, we're eating Chef Boyardee beefaroni with toast and we're watching much music...and he says, just when she's kind of shaking and weirding out, " jesus bitch...it looks like your body's in trouble"...i spit beefaroni and toast all over the table....we still talk about it from time to time 20 years later.....i like this song btw...before i'm flooded with hate mail :)
I saw this back in the 80s and thought it was inspired.
A few years later I noticed in the REM video Losing My Religion that Michael Stipe had similar type of indecisive dance moves as Mary has in this video.
REM won the best video of the year.
This is a truly haunting video and fits the music like a glove.
I must live a sheltered life...I missed this gem back in the eighties....I'm a Natalie Merchant & Cowboy Junkies fan and somehow I missed Mary....I'm gonna make up for lost time....this is an excellent share!
I remember this song being so unlike anything that I was listining to at the time yet being caught up in how hauntingly beautiful it was...and still is.
Another wonderful Canadian musician left to our devices while we unleash shit examples of our homegrown talent to the world at large.
She was working on at least one song with a surprising collaborator (I'm not allowed to say who). Unfortunately, said surprising collaborator did not use the new song on said artist's latest album (perhaps it will appear on a 7" or something later). She IS on the new Tindersticks record, though.
Such an amazing song. not heard it for years until it came up on shuffle on the Ipod this morning. Remember seeing her live early 90's in London, with Morrissey attending the gig. Stunning voice.
Lucky you! I just heard a radio show where Mary Margaret O'Hara was mentioned as being Tom Waits' muse. And that she is singing backing vocals on the new Tindersticks album. I don't know if any of this is true, but I always will cherish "Miss America". "Body's in trouble" is loaded with very special memories....
I saw her at a pizza place on College Street in Toronto about a month ago. Still beautiful. I couldn't say anything to her, even though I should have. But I stopped listening to her one and only and so beautiful record years ago when it became clear that there would probably not be another one.
I LV U MARE ////// WEBBER!!!!!LOVE THE WHOLE FAM DAMILY MICHAEL,MARCUS MARE CATHERINE PAT TOM {have I forgotten anybody?} GOD your parents were BIZ--EEEEEE!!! LUV!
In a world of freeze dried performances and rampant consumerism Mary O reminds us to not to just think outside the box but to BE outside the box. People might think that's weird but weird is generally a judgement to do with being different from the usual conformity. From the first moment I heard her music I was mesmerised. I thought punk, I thought jazz, I thought poetry. Whatever her music is like it's also not like it's just phenomenal.
Another great video from k8fan! Mary Margaret remains one of my all time favorite singers. Her voice almost sounds like a viola. She's really beautiful and such an expressive performer.
I remember when I first saw this video back in the day, I thought Mary Margaret O'Hara suffered from Tourette Syndrome. 'Miss America' is a great album. She also did the backing vocals on Morrissey's "November Spawned A Monster" song.
Wow... I had no idea I had her only album. And she keeps performing it? Either way, she knows what shes doing. She's got a method. May be my favorite female singer.
Sadly I've never seen her all-too-rare solo shows, so I have no idea what she covers. But she doesn't lack material. She's well known for calling musician friends up and leaving new songs on their answering machines. So I suspect she sings whatever she feels like singing during her once a year concerts.
She's a genius. Criminal that she's only made one proper album. But maybe she doesn't want to. Her sister is Catherine O'Hara from Christopher Guest movies like 'For Your Consideration' and 'A Mighty Wind'.
ahhhh she is sooooooo brilliant AND I am glad that there are a whole lots of idiots who dont get her because that means I am not like them!!!!!!! woooohooooooo....for epicureans only :)
miss america is brilliant, just scintillatingly brilliant. Mary Margaret's timing and expression are singular. it has been a pleasure to watch this, and ohers posted on youtube. wish there were more! thanks :-)
thanks ever so much for posting- one of my favorite songs of all-time from one of the most underappreciated and unforgettable albums of the 80's, and I never knew that there was a video clip for it. such a treasure. I noticed that she's performed a time or two in the last year or so- it would be the fulfillment of a decades-long wish to see her perform one day.
A couple of years back I went to see "The Black Rider", a musical theater piece, in Sydney. After a few minutes I leaned across to my wife and whispered "the leading lady really reminds of a singer I like, Mary Margaret O'Hara". At interval I read the programme and lo and behold, it was she! Man, I had no idea. What a treat it was. She sang like a bird.
Oh dear - I signed up to UTUBE in the hope of interesting discourse - and what do I find? Some sense, but in the main - morons. Oh well, if you can't appreciate this wonderful somgstress, I really feel sorry for you.
A number of years ago I had a rather nasty epiphany...I realized that, no matter how you measure it, one half of the population is dumber than the other half.
It's a typical Matt Mahurin video. Every one of his videos look like this - in B&W, with loads of slow fades. He did a pile of them in the 90s until people just got tired of it.
Criminal that such a beautiful, unique and talented artist has such a limited output.Apart from Miss America,Apartment Hunting(soundtrack)and the Christmas single can anyone let me know if she recorded anything else?
She did an album with a band called The Henrys a good few years ago. When Miss America was released in 1989,I was in hospital recovering from a very serious motorcycle accident. The Bodys in Trouble (how befitting) video was one of the few things beyond morphine that helped me forget the pain!
I don't think it's criminal, she's just very eccentric. Her eccentricity is likely the thing that kept her from becoming a household name.I like her just the way she is much better than had she become a 1989 Britney Spears.
I don't think she has enough money in the band to qualify as eccentric. Her sister Catherine described her as her "crazy sister".
I don't think there is any danger of her ever becoming a standard pop-tart. But I don't think there is anyone who listens to her work who doesn't wish there were more of it.
Not all eccentrics have money, that's for certain. While she's obviously well past the pop-tart age, maybe she's glad she didn't become too famous. A friend of mine was a waitress in two Toronto restaurants(Bamboo& China Blues) where both MM and Catherine were regulars (in the late 80s/height of both their careers),she reports that they both were crazy, not just MM-but always respectful..By the way,I was the one who made the post as "Bratstard"(my friend was logged in unbeknownst to me).
That's also why listening to her only once just made up for being previously numbed down by the thousands of dumb, catchy pop tunes that sell by the millions, and that they are trying to sneak into your head like parasites.
It's about real expression vs disgusting exploitation.
Best kept secret..Mary plays live every St.Patty's day at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern here in Toronto to a packed house. You will never foget it if you see her. As far as I know, this is the only way to witness her genius anymore..other than listening to her few precious recordings of course.
