  • This is actually the Sharks vs the Jets, if the rumble ended in a huge flippin' orgy...

  • I can't help but think, "Who gave these dancers the choreography from the Sharks vs. Jets rumble in West Side Story?"

  • it's crazy how people back then in 1913 started a riot because of this. But this is actually very dope! :D

  • I thought this was about a girl dancing herself to death.

This is just some crazy zombie orgy.

  • I like the part from 2:40 to 4:00 :p

  • Can anyone explain to me what was actually meant to happen in this scene?

  • @korfreak

Pagan sacrifice. According to the story the girl was suppose to dance herself to death.

  • i prefer the original choreography by ninjinsky. these other versions often only have a one dimensional sexual aspect to them. this ballet is also about human sacrifice

  • @TheLVB1827 That's actually because in the original piece from Stravinsky this part is called "the Sacrifice".

  • @CarlitosDessay yes i know this. this choreography here seems sexual in nature and doesn't depict a sacrifice to me. some people enjoy the new renditions of the rite, but i prefer ninjinsky.

  • This was re-choreographed though, the original was Nijinsky.

  • I personally prefer Satie.

  • ... wow....

  • weirdest and dumbest thing i have ever seen

  • @davidcb3 you have not been on the internet long enough then.

  • @maximumbacon i just feel bad for these dancers who weren't good enough to get a decent dancing job and got stuck humiliating themselves

  • I have the weirdest boner right now...

  • @GuyGaduare Dammit I was going to say that. On a more serious note, Stravinsky is so cool.

  • I honestly would have been one of the people who hated this show. Maybe not a fist-fighter, but I much prefer the style from the 1700's and 1800's, not the post World War 1 nonsense. To this day we have Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, thanks to the crap in art that arose after the influenza pandemic and war-death...

  • is this porn?

  • Accidental boners. This ballet.. that must be awkward.

  • Even back in 1913, people knew how make stuff just to piss off the "establishment"

    Bravo.

  • wow lol

  • Oh modernism.

  • Kind of reminds me of the music in that episode of Star Trek where Kirk's fighting that one tribal guy

  • @PerfectStranger776 I know I was thinking the exact same thing, though I thought it was when he was fighting the lizard

  • this right here, describe what was going on in charles manson's head

  • it´s just so great, you can´t be the kind of square praying for the original, like if that could matter, anyway, thanks for the video

  • 3:08 Wow! What the fuck is that?!?!?! Pussy fuck? No wonder why this caused a riot...

  • Wooooooow what an amazing performance, it transmits total energy, total stamina. Does anybody know what's the name of the Company who performs this version?

  • It would be better were the women nude :9

  • WOW, THIS IS DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot believe how bad this performance is!!!! It is not even close to the original choreography. The story and movements are nothing near what it should of portrayed! Igor Stravinsky would be infuriated if he saw this! What an insult this production created! BOOOOO!

  • @Shinbasher Are you a close personal friend of Stravinsky? Do you have any idea how his mind worked? Probably not, so let's just ignore that idiotic statement. Secondly, it's another choreographer's take on it. That doesn't make it disgusting or a bad performance. Perhaps it doesn't resonate with you in the same way that those which stick closer to the original movements do, but that's most accurately described as a fault in your ability to appreciate variety as opposed to in the dance.

  • @lusbyj I have been researching Stravinsky an modernism for 2 years now. Considering Stravinsy wrote the music & story with an intention, I would think the choreographer would take this into account. The Rite of Spring is about humans in their most primal state welcoming a new season with their pagan rituals. I don't care for this interpertation and all I can say is that it is not the true interpertation and I don't think one should change it if they don't know what they are doing.

  • @Shinbasher I would say that, considering the either nude or "natural" colours used in the costumes and lighting and the movements which are obviously representing (albeit in a slightly abstracted way) the fertility rituals which accompanied spring, they have told the story every bit as effectively as in the original. If you really struggle that much with symbolism I suggest you choose something other than an art to study.

  • @lusbyj I believe this last section of Stravinsky's composition is entitled "The Great Sacrefice". Where do you see the sacrefice? The female dancer is forced to dance herself to death by her elders. Where do you see that? I see a male and a female in the act of reproducing... I believe you need re-interpret my aurgument. This interpretation is not orignal, which in turn has people thinking that this was what caused the riot.

  • @Shinbasher It can be a sacrifice in the form of her innocence, or a death in the form of the french "petit mort". I don't know; I don't particularly care. Like I've already said, it's a re-interpretation. If you're a purist and will only ever accept the original choreography then I'm not sure why you watched this in the first place. The fact that you won't accept it however does not make it disgusting, and your measly 2 years of study does not equate to some telepathic link to the late composer

  • @Shinbasher Also, it's spelt "sacrifice".

  • @lusbyj My opinion stands on its own feet. This interpretation is not the original and I do not agree with people that are new to Stravinsky should watch an interpretation before the original. There is no point in arguing with you on YouTube, nor is it possible to continue as you have made this intellectual debate personal. I study music because I love it. I study Stravinsky because I compose. Maybe next time you will find more to say on the topic rather than on the individual.

  • @Shinbasher It is an opinion. Not a fact. You cannot say that this production is objectively bad, not can you claim with any certainty that it would have been inherently offensive to Stravinsky. To argue against either of those points would be sheer idiocy. If people mistake this for the original then I'm sure it's not a disaster. If it's *that* offensive to you, why not post a link to the original choreography instead of needlessly insulting a perfectly valid but alternative reimagining?

  • @Shinbasher You need to re-evaluate your understanding of what an ad-hominem argument is if you truly think lusbyj is making one. And since we're on the subject, you've used (albiet incorrectly, since lusbyj isn't actually using an ad-hominem argument) an argument from fallacy.

Past that, it's a reinterpretation. There's nothing wrong with it going in a different direction than the original. Truly, reinterpretation is a very common concept in art, I'm surprised that you're so offended by it.

  • this has to be the weirdiest thing ive seen in a long time. first the girl is emily rose, then the zombie walks around, they turn into penguins hoping around, start doing some mating dance while everyone else pretends they're airplanes, then he hits it once for a long time while the others do random yoga stretches. but it sure did make my day. thumbs up if you feel the same way

  • If you're looking at this and thinking omg I can see why people rioted. i dont think this is the original choreography.

  • Braindead; I'm sticking to the Joffrey ballet. :/

  • Looks like a typical day at work to me.

  • No way....

Pina Bausch choreography is a thousand better then this..These dancer need passion in their moves.

  • the music is okay, but the dancing... im pretty sure some found it....a little too much?more like way too much? wouldve done waaay better w/out the dancers....

  • @JuiliiFromTM That's what it is. The Rite of Spring is the score to a ballet.

  • 0:09

    going to the store

  • Just to make everyone aware, this is the music but not the Choreography that caused a riot. This is someone else's choreography. Just thought I should clear that up.

  • These artists aren't deep, they're dumb. Only they understand themselves. What is this trying to convey? Anything other than sex?

  • @Mafioso27th Shock tactics.

  • This is like softcore porn. What is there to get? What is this an expression of? These artists aren't deep, they're dumb. Only they understand themselves.

  • wtf is this shit

  • i have a strange boner right now

  • Don't listen to this while you're with your girlfriend...

  • LOL its an orgy

  • My eyes went from ._. to O_O at 2:55

  • this is so creepy and retarted

  • @crazyforfun224 No, you're just a clueless idiot.

  • @crazyforfun224 FUCKING AWESOME MUSIC. I have no clue what the hell is up with these creepy bastards. DISLIKE THE HELL OUT OF THIS FUCKING VIDEO.

  • demasiados cambios de cámaras! no te permite ni ver lo global ni enfocarte en lo particular.

too many camera changes! you can't see the global thing, neither focus in the particular!

  • Meh

  • WoW Powerful !

  • @worldofprettycraft i agree this is phenomenally passionate and exciting, but quite different from the original choreography,... it wasn't as sex focused as "the david" said, its a little too elegant and polished, the controversy behind the original, was because its a more, brutal and primitive, however i do love the elegant and polished"ness" of this.... its odd, i love both versions for different reasons

  • The music makes this hard to masturbate to.

  • Anyone wants to know what happens if they mix theme of paganism with twisted revolutionary music, unconventional dance movements and a lot of other weird stuff? The Rite of Spring!

    Its great!

  • Stravinsky you perv.... :D badass

  • just love it.!!!!

  • It's like a megalomanic orgy. really cool

  • smart guy

  • erm..... even though i know these are pro ballet dancers, this whole scene made me very uncomfortable :-/

  • IS this about the ways a zombie horde researches on methods of reproduction?

  • I can definitely see how in 1913 this would cause a riot.

  • @worldofprettycraft no. this is not the 1913 choreography that freaked everyone out. that was done by Nijisky (sp). This is done by Maurice Bejart, recently. the original choreography is on youtube though. It was reconstructed and done in 1987. type in "rite of Spring Ballet original".

  • @worldofprettycraft the music or the choreography? I'm not sure if this is the original choreography...

  • @iDislikeNames I don't think it's the original choreography either. It was done by Vaslav Nijinsky.

  • @worldofprettycraft the original ballet made the dancers wear traditional russian clothing and settings much more elaborate. this is a modern approach to the ballet. but the moves are similar but yeah its not what a typical 1913 ballet should look like regardless. dont get the impression they danced almost naked in 1913....

  • @worldofprettycraft This isn't the original choreography though.

  • @worldofprettycraft Music 110 or 111 wtech

  • This seems toot inappropriate to me. Maybe I'm just conservative, but the sexual aspect of this whole thing seems to be in the limelight a little too much.

  • music from voyager golden record. aliens feel honored!

  • @lxiam this type of jerky movement and discordant music was radical for the time period and wasn't what people were expecting..some started to protest its wierdness and the other people around them got mad...fights ensued. it doesn't matter what part you watch :)

  • I LOVED this in Mao's Last Dancer.

  • it's amazing,it really like ancient pagan ritual! And orgies was a usual thing

  • hahahahaha!

  • i think i just watched a sex orgy.

  • WOW! I am a little unsure about this?? I suppose the descriptive term I am looking for is interesting. I can't say I love it or even like it, it is so weird! I will say it is most definitely entertaining.

  • Love your comment about Lady Gaga!!! This is a fine rendering of the work, but my all time favorite is with Pierre Monteaux conducting the Paris Conservetoire Orchestra. I have, without success, tried to find a Monteaux recording of this work on Amazon.com. can anyone tell me where to locate this old war-horse (Monteaux)?

  • Ohhh I love this song. We played this at music camp -this year :)

  • A complete disaster. I cannot believe it.

  • ...i think i'm starting to realize how this once started a riot. it's...something else.

  • @FoolsGil Quite so.

  • BEARDYMAN

  • jaws inspiration

  • they kinda look like chromosones at 3:59 i actually think theres alot more visual references besides the obvious. i'd like to know if this was intentional or if i'm just over analysing this. i love this!!!

  • LOL

  • Very good as a modern interpetation. If this version open in Paris in 1913 it might have caused WWII years ahead. Doug

  • I can listen to a connection between this and Deathspell Omega's music!

  • I think this is the ancestor of all progressive metal and rock. and it's hard xD

  • I can see the most boring people in the world liking this.

  • @Ccavazo What is boring about this?

  • This is fucking retarted.

  • Later on it just looks like the pics the Joy of Sex book from the 70s

  • I have such a high level of respect for what these people can do with their bodies.

  • this is one of my fav modern pieces yay!!!

  • All the haters are just as narrow-minded as those idiots who booed Stravinsky or mocked Picasso in the beginning of the XX century. Yes, this is NOT A TRADITIONAL classic music, art and ballet, this is modern, avangard, surrealism...not able to understand it?

  • @GreenBaldrick

I am no hater, but this is quite dated by now.

not only is it "old" in it's quite restricted and hyper stylized movement vocabulary but also the qualities of the piece that propose duality; male-female; giver-receiver; active-passive. there is no internal discussion of what it obviously takes for granted.

also, the use of representation is very different from what is now happening in the arts.

I would not call this surrealism, by far. Sorry, but it's just not.

  • @christofferschieche

    sorry what is internal discussion?

Is it more nuanced? And what is happening in the arts now?

Seriously I'm just curious; it's interesting.

  • @GreenBaldrick What you're not able to understand is the "avangard" (did you mean avant-garde?) qualities that this ballet supposedly has.

  • i swear there are moments when she's doing the thriller lol

  • Is it just me, or are the dancers humping each other?

  • @KindomOfHappiness i agree completely

  • This type of choreography really blows

  • THIS CHOREOGRAPHY HAS SO NOT GOT ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT ...

  • thumbs up if you came here because in google there was a martha graham logo and so u went to wikipedia to read about her and then you found out she was the Stravinsky of dance then you typed stravinsky in youtube and got here

  • @valmanzar16 hahaha exactly!

  • @valmanzar16 I came here because I already knew about Igor Stravisky and his controversially different music (for his time). Goes to show that someone pushing the boundaries of what people consider "music" is NOTHING NEW.

  • 3:10 I really wonder how that guy has managed not to pop a boner...

  • @toreyadams he's gay?

  • Wat the hell am I watching?????

  • Could somebody give me a hint where I could find a video with the coreography close as possible to the original?

  • @exnihilo224 Search "Vaslav Nijinsky - The Rite Of Spring (reconstructed)" on YouTube.

  • um i want the original choreography back please

  • Стравинский дает)))

  • omg I really dislike this with my whole heart. The music and the dance. Anybody who likes this over Baroque/Classicism/Romantic music?

  • @I4AM4NAME It's the kind of music that you gradually get hooked on, but I have to admit that the version used here isn't that good. I'm not too big fan of modern disturbing art either.(besides music) This isn't the original choreography still. I like a lot of classical music(from most periods), but the Rite is one of my favourites just beacause of the originality, effort and catchy factor. You should check out a symphony orchestra playing the whole work. It's worth 33 minutes of your life.

  • @I4AM4NAME

i wouldnt say i like it over Baroque etc. but i do love this.

i have the added advantage of loving the dancing too.. i truely think that this is a fabulous piece.. think how exciting it must be to perform! i want to see the whole ballet now. you are of course entitled to your opinion but please dont write off all modern music/ dance because of this video! try 'song of the earth' keneth macmillan choreography and darcy bussle dancing if you can get it on youtube! :)

  • This is not the original choreography, few took notes on dance back then and it has it has been lost ever since. I can't imagine it was this "graphic" in 1913, but am sure it was strange. Perhaps some just didn't like the sound of it

  • We're in 21 century and think this is a little awkward...imagine what the people thought in the early 1900's. No wonder they started a riot....but you know it is very interesting....in a weird way kinda way

  • @MKMaMa4u aahh *weird kinda way* sorry

  • :39 zombie approaching

  • dislike

  • It would have been better if they did it without their leotards getting in the way.

  • "music is powerless to express anything." -Igor Stravinsky. and as I recall he was very unhappy about the original choreography. I won't go so far as to say he'd enjoy this Freudian interpretation, but I doubt he'd disapprove

  • WHAT O.O

  • Cool. The happy ending.

  • I think this would be best described with...

    WTF!?

  • Can this please be renamed "The Awkward Ballerina?"

  • @TeamReallyEpicSauce its actually late romantic/early 20th century music :)

  • weird but wonderful.

  • Did i just watch sex in clothes?

    WITH CLASSICAL MUSIC!?

  • @TeamReallyEpicSauce Classical music ended in 1825... This ballet is of the 20th century; the futuristic, neo-classical era.

  • @TeamReallyEpicSauce Yes son, you just fucking did.

  • @chrissanne14344 Great... wait a second... YOUR NOT MY DAD!

  • @chrissanne14344 or my mom...

  • If this is the original choreography, I could definitely see why this caused a riot in 1913.

  • @iforgety Actually the original choreography (or at least as close as one can get to the original) can be seen in this video. watch?v=bjX3oAwv_Fs There actually is no original written record of the original because it was so controversial, Nijinsky had to re-choreograph it. The recreation was based on interviews with the original dancers who were able to remember what the dance was like.

  • stunning interpretation

  • i didn't understand the theme in these ballet!!! i like nijinsky's choreography, but this one is... D: i would like this choreography if the music would be more contemporary

  • I disagree

  • Lady Gaga thinks she's sooo original. This has got her beat.

  • Comment removed

  • @hellokittydimaggio why, it's almost as if you know nothing about stravinsky or the fact that the rite of spring was written as a ballet!

  • Comment removed

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • we watched this in my history of music course and it was really awkward for everybody.

  • not sure if the music was meant for an orgy.. i must say im pretty disturbed right now.

  • pure beauty!!!

  • I like that they're "naked" but not naked. It takes away the distraction and helps you appreciate the art and not get a boner.

  • thats great if you wanna put ur own spin on this piece.... BUT DONT GO AWAY FROM THE ORIGINAL CONTEXT OF THE CREATOR!!!!!!!!! THE RITE OF SPRING IS NOT A STORY OF LOVE...

  • I love Stravinsky but I'm sure Nijinsky is spinning in his grave.

  • I could not be in a ballet like that I would get a boner and it would just be highly awkward.

  • @Varibyss13 wow dude i just had the same thought !

  • tHey are not wearing clothes

  • wtf is this? O.O

i mean common...these arent Russian pagan dancers celebrating the rite of spring and the earth...

that girl isn't dead at the end ...like common. I know the premiere for this ballet was in France but that doesnt mean a French choreographer can change it all @_@

  • I felt like I was watching porno. As if I'm gonna shut the laptop as soon as I here some one coming.

  • It's a shame that Nijinsky's original choreography is lost except for verbal descriptions and a few unbelievably strange still photographs.

  • @cousinjk actually the Joffrey Ballet a number years ago did a reconstruction, as much as possible, of the original choregraphy and production. Having trouble posting the link , but check Rite of Spring posted here on youtube by username chammar1

  • 3:08 This must have been very UPLIFTING for him lol

  • If you can't handle sexual matierial, get your Puritan ass out of here.

  • I don't care much about the performance. I am more drawn to Stravinsky's music in this ballet.. It is a work of pure genius! Some 100 years ahead of his time for 1913..Truly magnificent! He was simply too far advanced to be accepted in the beginning.

  • I don't know what this is but it's disgusting. I don't see where the art is. Just cut the foreplay and have stage f***ing.
