Watching this has only made me want to work harder. I dont want to end up at the back of a mac donald counter or working as a cashier. I want to be a stand-up comedian and a fashion designer. Joan Rivers is my idole for comedy and Valentino is my idol for fashion. Joan brings funny to the table, and I've modeled myself off her. My friends want to be the next Angelinia Jolie, I want to be the Joan river knockoff. The asian Joan river knock, that sounds right.
yes really great interview, but honestly i think joan is pretty both oudside and in, wish i had that balance that she has, i feel ugly and now it could be wourse but how do you change that. i think only time will tell. cheerio
This was a truly great interview. I've disliked Joan Rivers for most of her career but something seems to have changed in me. Because now I smile as soon as I see her start into a routine. Maybe that's because of things like Celebrity Apprentice and talk shows like this. Or maybe it's something about her just being old enough now to really get away with it. Whatever it is, she makes me laugh and its hard not to like her anymore.
I can totally see the 2 side of her personnality, the big mouthed comedian and the quiet shy woman....Love her...And would love to see her wish of dying on stage ! That would be the best for her! She's get the last laugh ! Honestly,just adore that woman...she has that ability to make you laugh about absolutely anything !
joan girl you've shown them, knowing what its like to be an outsider when i was young i really admire you. thanks for making me laugh too.. lots of love from ireland
@robzrob I don't think she's targeting "ordinary" folk when she says for old people to get out or that jews are this or that. Those are blanket jokes that cover those people but don't really hurt because they're just too broad. I'm sure some people would be and are offended by any jewish/old jokes but at least as far as Joan Rivers seems to see it, it's not the same as pointing at a fat woman in the front row and calling them out personally. Attacking them as some comedians would.
@techpops I don't know - I'm in 2 minds, I suppose. Jo Brand has a good rule, I think it's something like: 'I would never mock anybody for something that they can't help being/doing.'
@mwmoregon003 She did but Joan let it slide, I think she was just in shock from having a real interview as opposed to some sound byte filler / promotion vechicle for whatever.
I love Joan while finding her challenging. I've come to appreciate her much more than I was younger. Not sure how much is my opinion changing, or her having moved past the jokes about Yoko Ono being ugly, Brooke Shields being stupid, etc., which I found frustrating at the time. Now I find her humor wonderfully biting. It's a little hard to watch this interview since she sounds like someone carrying a lot of pain. Bless her.
Kathy Griffin talked about the sexism in the TV industry (and comedy), and how NBC flat out told her that they won't do a comedy centered around a woman. Comedy Central doesn't sound much better. It's amazing to read such things going on still, so it makes me wonder how Joan and Phyllis Diller every broke in.
Ms Rivers comes across as quite genuine despite all the obvious artifice around her. (Sort of like a non-singing New York Jewish comedienne version of Dolly Parton.) Thanks for posting this!
You are totally right! Explains why I LOVE LOVE LOVE both of them. I'm glad that you said this because I feel exactly the same way. Dolly is my idol, and Joan has become a close second. They are as real as they come.
i thought when Dawn was saying "thats interesting " i thought Dawn was more surprised at an answer. Or was thinking of a different interpretation than Joan said.
I missed this when it was broadcast and was just BESIDE myself so I'm so grateful you put it up!
It was a very quick 30 minutes though - apart from being naturally hilarious Joan Rivers has such a humanity and wisdom I could just listen to her all night
The best joke: the deaf man couldn't hear people voting him off. It's just hilarious. I love you Joan.

I've gone off her. She knows that she lacks confidence and that she's hurt if she's mocked, but thinks other people should just take it.

@robzrob
nah i dont agree. joans a comedian. first rule, you make fun of things.. people
+ its an art..
and like she said.. she only makes jokes about those who have success ..
thats normal good natured.
its not like shes hitting people when their down and out.
+ its comedy... ur suppose to dig at people
ssips720 1 year ago
@ssips720 'she only makes jokes about those who have success ..' - what about the 'Old People' and 'Ugly People' routines, then?
robzrob 1 year ago
@robzrob
well if ur taking it that much to heart.. it will hurt..
but its comedy.. they are jokes.. u are not supposed to take them seriously..
or do u just always listen to what people say about you..
she says the things she does to get a laugh..
keep that in mind..
ssips720 1 year ago
@ssips720 anything goes, then?
