Goes to prove that Tom Snyder knew nothing of this band. Didn't he realize that Steve perry was journey and wrote most of the music that made the band what it was. I think Tom is a conservative and didnt like Steve's long hair.
@BettySantoro Yeah, while not a founding member, he was the one member who was able to catapault them to commercial success, and who they couldn't survive without and have anyone care to listen to them. Even now, if the singer can't sound a bit like Steve, they can't sell records. Problem is, without his songwriting ability, there isn't the 'spark' that could ever make the songs endure for 30 years. Cain is too 'new agey' and Schon doesn't seem to have the lyrical ability.
Okay, I'm going to throw this out here - This wouldn't be when Reagan was shot because he was shot in March 1981 and the Escape album was released in July/August 1981. The DVD of this that I have shows this appearance as being 1981 not 1982, soooooooo, my guess is going to be that they were going to play "Dead or Alive" and this was Oct. 6, 1981, when Anwar Sadat was assassinated. ???? . . . . just a guess.
Wonder what were 'the events of the day' back in '82 that they had to change their program on short notice... Always loved watching Tom Snyder's show. He was direct and had a great laugh.
I don't think Tom was rude. That is just "Tom". I assume the folks that thought he was rude never watched him on a regular basis. Great interview. I enjoyed it. Thanks Perryfan4ever.
Always wondered what tom snyder meant at the end here saying "....thanks for changing the music that was little bit more suitable..." LOL was he worried they might sing something unsuitable?
The Babys toured w/ Journey on the Departure tour, so they knew of Jonathan Cain when Greg wanted to leave. It brought a new songwriter/dynamic into the fold (Cain) and he played what was to become 'Open Arms' for Steve (after Babys singer John Waite said it was too sappy). Frankly, when you hook a new demographic (i.e. women), your sales will grow, and the song "Don't stop believin" helped also...I always hated that critics called these guys 'Corporate Rock'
You'r right about Tom's rudenness, seems as if he has a thing against Steve and he's purposly trying to embarass him,but I love how Steve keeps his cool, and maybe he's biting his toungue a bit but but shows what a sweet gentleman he is And what an absolute jerk Tom Snyder is.
Oh for anyonw who watched Snyders show. That was just his way. I am sure he did not do it on purpose. Of course I am sure all the women would have loved to just hear Steve talk LOL But they were a band. It was TV what do you expect. ?
We all love Steve so it's going to make us mad .. grrrrrrrrrr Tom was notorious for acting like a pain in the ass.
Tom was only kidding and the guys knew that, maybe it wasn't the best joke but who cares, he meant no disresepect. People are so uptight these days, you say one little wrong thing and they all cry. Suck it up.
this interview is so strange. Perry tried to answer and Tom cut him off!! Really weird. I wonder if Valory ever thought he would be one of the ones fired? Perry definately got snubbed by Tom Snyder, I'm just glad Valory was gracious, and Steve was very polite even when he was cut off
perrylovr you are full of it. I was there at that concert and Steve Perry told the truth when he said he saw it in the fans eyes that they were there for the rolling stones. Journey was a last minute decision they played no role in the sell out of that concert.
talk about being rude!!! damn steve could answer that question why did he have to be so freakin rude and interrupt him that way he should have just let him speak ;( but isn't steve the cutest =) him and his giggle lol
Reagan was shot in 1981, this video was probably shot the Snyder was told his show was cancelled. He had to do 4-5 more shows after being told he was out
Ross sounds very reasonable/mature - I never really heard him speak before. Jon is so humble. Steve really takes over - sitting closest to Tom, answering most of the questions. He rates a "1000" on a cuteness scale of 1-100!!! Hearing them interviewed you do get a better idea of their personalities than when they are performing on stage, although they are still "performing" to some extent. Very interesting to see this video.
This is a great interview. Tom Snyder was always such a great interviewer. Steve's contribution to Journey is unparalled. There's only one Journey for me, and that's Steve Perry.
Tom Snyder is dead now-he was a good host and did great with Bands like Journey! This was like 25 years ago wasn't it? Around 1980, I remember this show.
This is a FUCKIN' AWESOME INTERVIEW! I saw this tour The STONES and JOURNEY. It was exactly as the "guys" put it, a STONES CROWD. But, it made JOURNEY give it thier 110% BEST EFFORT! AS a PASSIONATE FAN of both the STONES and of JOURNEY, to me it was a great 1-2 PUNCH! The STONES always give it thier BEST in concert, I believe this tour showed JOURNEY to never underestimate the talent that you have, and KICK MAJOR ASS NIGHT AFTER NIGHT, and it WORKED!
you know if steve every came back i bet it would be the best reunion band ever but if he never left i dstill bet he would have some of his voice but i know wat he was talking about when he said he could sing when i was listing to my trial by fire he sorta lost his high pitch voice but u know he gave it his all an he come back know he be ok but aleast he did go steve!!!!
I remember those days with Journey also... Steve gave enough of himself musically through the years that he performed with the band to last a lifetime! I saw several live performances in the eighties and will NEVER forget them! I thank him to this day for the happiness that ne brought me in my younger years! Just the mere sound of that voice....
Where's Mr. Neal? What was wrong with him that day...Have a feather? Bless their hearts, they were booed off the stage. Something must be wrong with me, I NEVER like the Stones. Mick just kinda grosses me out! I like Ross, he came back..Check out "When You Love a Woman". Looking good Ross...real good! I absolutely love these guys!! Miss them terribly! Bapw
WHERE WAS MR. NEAL? Did he have a feather that day or what? I like Ross...He came back later. Looking good in "When You Love a Woman". Looking REAL good! During this interview, the best 3 were present!
Steve Perry inspired me since I was a paperboy. He is the reason I play and write today. No other man has done this in music than him... I think I am one of millions...
I seem to remember the Buffalo thing with the Rolling Stones. I think Journey was not well received by the Stones crowd. Steve answered that in a classy way.
I thought it was interesting that Ross spoke to that as well...I also didn't know that Greg Rollie chose Jonathan Cain as his replacement... interesting....
It's strange hearing Ross talking about how you ask a band member to leave when later on he was fired from the band. Only God knows why, he's a great bass player.
Because if Ross didn't go Randy Jackson would've never had his fifteen minutes of fame that he brings up EVERYTIME someone from Idol sings a Journey tune.
Indeed all steve fans wish he would get back with Journey. I am only 14, and that would be magical, BUT I wish Steve the best and I want him to be happy. If he's not happy with Journey, I'm not happy. I think he's enjoying just having a normal life and as fans, we should just learn to accept that. I love you, STEVE!!! YOU ARE MY HERO! love, peace, and PERRY forever ~ Jade <3
also, he's older. why destroy something so beautiful. if he returns, it will sound ok, but it won't ever be the same as when he was young and in his prime. i think he's smart to let it remain as it was. it would have been different if he had stayed with the group through all these years, but coming back now, just wouldn't be the same.
I was wondering the same thing. Can we find out the date of the interview? If so, Wikipedia should tell us what happened. Somewhere around 1980 / 1981.
Might have to do with the Iran Hostage Crisis, perhaps. I can't recall anything else major around then.
No one did an interview quite like Tom!! He will be missed....I love how Perry turns what could have been an uncomfortable moment into a laugh. Great find! Thanks for sharing!
