i finished that kit yesterday and that kit is lever 2 and he is supposed to do level 1 but he doesn't have to. he is very good as a 5 year old. he reads directions good and he solder's good. and i like velleman kits because you get a big foil pad to solder so so parts will not fall out on small vibrations and maybe a small drop. he is good and so am i. i love velleman kits.
Top stuff! My dad taught me to solder at a similar age. I am truely greatful for him giving me a love for electronics at an early age that I still carry nearly 25 years on!
Go Malachi! I learned when I was about 10 but didn't make any good use of it until recently. I'm almost 26 now and it's harder than I remember. Be grateful that your dad has quality tools! (My Radio Shack iron definitely must go.)
Better than I did when I was 15. Hope he's comfortable with the heated soldering iron. Make sure to constantly remind him to keep a firm grip, and keep it pointed away. Very basic stuff, I'm sure, but god, at 13-14, I always used to burn myself because I was left handed and didn't take the care I should have.
@BrixXSM -Thanks for the comments! Yes I definitely keep reminding him it could "burn his face off", and he did touch the holder once (see here 7:00) which gets pretty hot, yet he is not afraid and wants to keep building and learning. I remind him to take deliberate movements and not to go fast. Just always know where the iron is and to have his solder ready before he picks up the iron. The iron is a little bit heavy/large for him, so the next project we will try a pencil tip iron.
@pyrofer Thanks! I was pretty nervous for those first 30 pads on the test board and those first 5 resistors, but he was being very safe with everything so I relaxed just a little. He needs to work on his math more I think before ohms law will make sense, but he could certainly memorize the "triangle" with V R and I ;-)
Dude.... Your son rocks... Your son is better than any 30+ year old.... even the best soldererer... has ooopses, and for a 5yo... oh lord... better than even us... he can put the best to shame... I am so Iknow it sound corny but , he even aint my kid and I am proud of him. And mulitple components to that board... man... wow.... just wow, no words for what he has done just no words. I applaud you for you teaching him and letting him work with the equipment I thank you from one maker to another.

:D This brightens my day, do you realize last year our class of 20 some 17-19 year olds couldn't solder this well half way though the year?
Keep it up kid :D

You are a brave brave man, and a lucky dad.
I wish I could trust my 5yo with a hot iron!
Congrats on passing on a usefull skill, now lets see the video where you explain Ohms Law to him :)
