When were you people born, 2000? Have you never seen pixel games before, or are you just that spoiled? As-is, a jump to voxels would be a step backwards. But it would be a step backwards in order to forge a new path forwards, past the glass ceiling of polygons.
Trust me, if you were to ever play a Halo game with fully diggable voxel environments and enemies, you would never look back at polygons. Fun > good graphics.
voxels can't possibly beat polygons if ZERO graphic cards support them, so they can't run at a decent speed at high resolutions... well, probably never good enough to beat the pretty polygons.
It's actually pretty weird that they did. They didn't gain anything from it and moving objects made from voxels don't offer much opportunity to optimize.
Many programmers played around with voxel technology at that time though and it might make an come back in the next few years for static geometry utilizing some hardware acceleration features.

kids go play a game called commanche overkill, but kids will never understand the power of this method..
take a look at it, this game it ran fine on an old computer such as a 386 dx2 @ 66mhz, which today we have machines thats 45 times more powerful..
