I think its more alienation. You have to break free and stop following society and be who you are when he says "Everyone's shut off their mind. So I'll turn on mine" People are all banded together like cliques and stuff and when they find someone who different they band against them like how he says "Careful of what you might say 'cause they'll put you away." You're alone because no one wants you to be you. Its confusing and you just feel like you walking in circles. But that's just my opinion.
