@mellosrock Actually, there were a couple of shows where we took a 10-15 minute walk away from the the stadium parking lot to warm up, and friends of ours and BD alumni who were in the stands said that they could hear us playing this warm up while there was another corps on the field performing.
@mellosrock G's had less back pressure and we could push them much farther then what they are able to push today. I think there is a lot different sound as well...the price for progress...if you wish to call it progress.
@deadelectromix Do you really think that WE were on Bb flat horns this year or are you messin with me? Because I swear that the soprano horn that I played on in 1999 was a Kanstul Powerbore G bugle. I think you're messin with me. Or you could just be an idiot...........
My god, someone had chops that year. Those hangovers are solid. @RandomPoorGuy I found this on limewire too back in the day and loved the raw power. One of my favorite corp warmups.
OK....so almost 50,000 views. What's it gonna take to get you to put that VHS tape into a digital transfer device. I'll f'ng pay you to do it. You are doing a disservice to drum corps by bogarting the original.
Gino Cipriani. BD Soprano Soloist in the mid 80's. 1999 was his last year as an instructor for BD. He is now with the Cadets. Yeah....He's one crazy fucker, isn't he? When ever he would get into it like that, you couldn't help but play loud.
Do you have a master copy of this? This truly is a gem of drum corps videos. I would love to see this in better quality, since it does look like its a video recording of a TV. Blue SMOKE
Wow, talk about intense. As for the blowing the releases, if you studdy Jazz, it's stylistically correct. BD is jazz for the most part so stylistically, they're correct. Plus they do it all the time. I personally love to hear top sop blow over. I like to call it playing Ballzando
So then that arrangement and what you heard there was jazz?? Just because they're the Blue Devils and a lead sop hung a release?? Haha, that's beyond delusional.
Just like you hanging on every word I'm saying just so you can prove your point. Dude, It's music, It's' meant to be interpreted by both the composer and the performer. It took me 2 summers of corp and a major in music performance to realize that. When we played Summertime in Bluecoats 98, we played it our style and even threw in some African Naningo drum patterns in the Pit. We played Autumn Leaves with a latin feel, so yes, I do believe this is stylistically correct for the Devs.
Don't pretend you're not trying to prove a point either here. You're free not to respond, as am I. I actually like the discussion. I agree that adding that release is BDs take on it, and it's neat for the people who come to see them warm-up, but that doesn't make this a jazz chart. It's virtually a note for note transcription of what's in the soundtrack, and nobody would ever confuse that for a jazz soundtrack. And who cares? I still love it. It's still BD. They still rock. But jazz it ain't. :)
The distinction is irrelevant because there isn't a clear line between classical and Jazz music. Music, especially modern music, is influenced by lots of different cultures and ideas. For example, George Gershwin. John Williams' composition is largely classical in style, however has "jazzy" ideas like chord voicing and alternative chord extensions. So, the correct answer is, that this piece is probably mostly classical with jazz influences. BD isn't exclusively jazz- nothing is.
Okay, if you havent noticed, BD sops always blow their releases. Almost every encore standstill I've seen them play they've blown release and many other occasions. Its just their trademark.
lol umm i hope ur joking but yea its a drum and bugle corp. U could think of it as like a professional level marching band with brass cause brass rules. lol
lol that was crazy as shit! we are playing this in my hight school marching band, and we are a show stly band so i was like this is going to be wack playing a blue devils song, but i was super wrong!! WOOOOOOOT <3 blue devils
let me tell you i am in this hornline (the baritone who hangs over on the double B and the double C) I have never seen or heard anyone else ever come close to the awsomeness that was the 1999 blue devil hornline.
umm hello likewoo, '99 SCV came DAMN close to this brassline...it could be argued either way BD had the higher register mastered SCV had the lower register mastered. Cmon as a baritone player I would think you would give SCV the props they deserved that year.

Since when is Duel of the Fates jazz?
gc2332 2 years ago
Since Devs did it. They are stylistically jazz oriented. A tune does not have to swing like a monkey (Count Basie style) to be considered jazz.

So then that arrangement and what you heard there was jazz?? Just because they're the Blue Devils and a lead sop hung a release?? Haha, that's beyond delusional.

that kind of thing doesnt happen on accident in the blue devils.
biggreenblob 3 years ago 3
Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the chords don't go past beat 4 in the music. And blowing releases is (to me) a sign of immaturity.
MadCoSnareLine 3 years ago
yes, I agree it is a little immature. I guess that's just the Blue Devils for ya. I was just pointing out that it was on purpose.
biggreenblob 3 years ago
Oh yeah dude I understand what you're sayin'...it still doesn't take away from the sheer AWESOMEness of the horn line! :D
