  • On Christmas morning 1863, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was melancholy. Undoubtedly the deaths of his two beloved brides and news that his 19 years old son had been wounded in battle haunted him.

Hearing the sound of the town's bells pealing that Yuletide morning, Longfellow sat at his desk and picked up his pen, the anguish still gripping his very soul.

He composed three quick stanzas of a poem he entitled "Christmas Bells."

  • Love it(: lOl choir song(:

  • This song is on of my favs. Kinda cool how it was wrote over a hundred yrs ago but i love the casting crown version. The whole thing of the song is that his son died in the civil war and his wife got burnt really bad and he wrote it the first Christmas he was with out them.

  • good stuff

  • No person is ever at peace. We are born with a hole in our hearts & constantly looking to fill it with worldly things...but it can only be filled with the love of Jesus Christ. This is the gift of our Creator God.For He loved us so much He gladly sent His own Son to calvery for us. so we shall not die but have everlasting life with Him.Let all who have ears let them hear.

  • This Casting crowns is a really boring and unmusical version. There's much better renditions elsewhere.

  • @Sagradomoly

    lmao, you're funny.

I have to admit, that was a very good joke. Because IF you were serious, like I know you're not, you'd have to go to a insane mental institution.

  • My choir is singing this for my school to showcase our male singers. (: I love singing this(:

and im a girl, so we only say peace on eath(:

  • Wow! This is the first time I have heard this song. It gave me chills. It is beautiful! Just like Christ!

  • One Christmas I hope to sing this song when my nation is not at war.

  • @LeviDanielBarnes don't wait for Christmas. Sing the song all the time

  • i love this song and i love the song slow fade

  • I sang this song with a lot of other kids at a CHRISTmas program at my church. We sang the softer peace on earth. This song always gives me goose bumps.

  • The lyrics are phenomenal, but what I really enjoy is the piano and the slightly faster pace. The original was a little too slow for me. I also really like the almost epic point they build up to in the song.

  • i prefer the lds version honestly, but cant find it here. this is to modern. i like the the sharps and flats that this doesnt have unfort

  • @marzi21 - I respect you stating your preference. Many love this version as an inspired joining of Scripturally sound lyrics set to flowing, beautiful music. I'm biased, as I know one of the members, and saw it performed on the 2008 Christmas tour, but we all must open our hearts and minds for the Truth, and not just our comfort zone.

  • this is a poem written by Henry Longfellow that was written during the civil war. He hears the Christmas bells off in the distance as the war rages on and is synical about God. Then realizes that despite the war, the Christmas spirit manages to survive. Beautiful message.

  • The lyrics and theme of this song was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a romantic poet part of the fire side poets. Casting Crowns has really brought this great song back into spotlight with their great version. Awesome musical arrangement. 8

  • really touches the heart

  • Easily, the best group holiday album of 2008--the best in several years. Buy it for yourself and someone else.

  • This is wonderful! Thanks.

  • I'm not religious by any means but this is a great song, I love it. They have beautiful vocals, and for those of us that aren't religious, it isn't "overly preachy". Very nice.

  • @ferrelltara Hi. I'm not religious either. I'm just a Christian. Religion has nothing to do with our belief in Jesus as the Saviour. God Bless you for the comment though. Have a Merry Christmas.

  • This is a great song performed by a great group. The first I heard this song was on the Christmas in Washington show the other night. It was so moving and so well performed. I love these guys and the songs they sing. God will certainly reward them for their efforts toward spreading his message one day. I could listen to this song a hundred times over and not grow tired of hearing it.

  • I like this song alot. too bad that iTunes' latest download has such a terrible equalizer/sound that I have to listen to songs I downloaded on youtube! I hope they fix the problem because it ruines beautiful songs like this no matter how much you mess around with the sound. Great Song

  • this is a good song

  • (L)

  • :) :)

  • dont take this the wrong way i love christmas and the meaning of christ. but im not a big fan of christmas music but i LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!

  • I love the song, it's amazing!

  • This is the best version of this carol I've ever heard. I'm planning a Christmas wedding and definitely going to incorporate this song somehow.

  • That's cool!

  • His voice is so inspiring! I wish he also sang top 40 fare -- he'd be a HUGE star!!!

  • He is a huge star.. to God. These guys are devoted to encouraging God's people through music, and bringing the message of hope. Top 40 is hopeless... God is eternal.

  • This song is really great.

  • definitely!

  • I wish I had the chords to this song

  • go to higherpraise they have them there!:)

  • I did look there at your suggestion, but they were nowhere to be found. I've got em though, found a site that had them then I transposed/modulated to one half step lower for easier chords. F#m, D, A, E7 basically, capo one for the correct key. theres an E7/F# in the bridge.

  • harpo- here's a chord suggestion/correction for you... CAPO 1: F#m, D, A, C#7...

The E7 you have doesn't work in the main section... it DOES work at the end of the chorus- "Good will to men". Thanks though!

  • thankyou! I just couldnt figure that chord so i shot for close...Thanks again.

  • uhoh, which c#7 voicing are you using?

  • Oh, i thought I had found them there, oops. Which site did you find the chords?

  • the words to all of their songs are so insightfull I LOVE THIS BAND

  • i totally agree!

  • i love the story behind this song...written during the civil war. really helps us understand the feelings during that dark time.

    amazing song

  • thats a neat story

  • i love this song. i could listen to it over and over again

  • me too!

  • me third!

  • does anyone have the chords for this song?

  • Woah. I love them. Mark is my youth pastor. that said, I often take for granted how wonderful this band is. But lately I've been listening to their CD's again and I was AMAZED. Thanks for putting this on here orlandoyadelina!! I wanted to hear the whole song before I bought it. :)
