Was there ever a period in time where white girls were more beautiful? Southern belles, in their billowing hoop skirts, were very reflective of their aristocratic lifestyle. History reads that the southern gentry wore the skirts at great widths to illustrate that they didn't have to do any any work (impossible to do anything but sit, dance & walk) & parasols were used to keep their skin pure-white to differentiate their status from the poor especially their slaves. I bet they smelled great too!
