This may or may not make it any better for you, but actually Severus is only 31 in the first book. So when Hermione is 18 (as she would be for almost all of her seventh year because her birthday is in September) Severus is only 37, turning 38 in January. So the age difference between them is only twenty years, as opposed to thirty-eight years (if he were fifty and she twelve). It's true that Alan Rickman is around fifty, but in the books Severus is not quite twenty years older than Hermione.
