@Evangalist22 That's great for you, but you need to be aware that millions of people are forced into religion everyday, as I was for my entire childhood. I wrote a book about it too. If religion was optional for everyone, it would've died out long ago. That anyone would want to grovel, without being forced into it, is absurd.
@aajoeyjo Thats great to know. But you have to notice as well that the idea of God and Christianity should not be forced upon anyone. God has given mankind freewill to do as we so please. If someone forced you into it then obivously they went about it in the wrong way. God does not force himself on anyone, but merely gives us the option of choosing to live for him. I hope that one day you see the true light and find the life.
@aajoeyjo John 14:6- Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. This verse is very special and means that without Jesus there is no way, only confusion and deception, without Jesus there is no truth meaning only lies, and without Jesus there is no life only death. I hope you find Jesus my friend, I found him almost 3 years ago on my own and was never forced upon my life. I thrust myself upon the foundation of truth which is Jesus.
@Evangalist22 - Again, that sounds great, for an invisible friend that no one needs to rely on. But if it won't show up, it's crap. No matter how you promote it, nothing is nothing, m'friend.
Texas Freethought Convention huh?? Seems to me there is no free thought going on. People that do something like this are totally border line insane. I think its funny people like this only add words like "free thought" in their rallies or conventions only because they don't truly understand the idea that Christians think for themselves as well.
@Evangalist22 How are you thinking for yourself when defending christianity, there's bound to be the "Well, the bible says..."? It's "freethought" because the very act of thinking, of QUESTIONING, isn't dangerous to any establishment.
But for the record, I do find this silly. No more silly than religion whole-cloth, though.

Even though you zapped him, I wanted to point out that his idea that it is a mistake that Darwin coined the term "Survival of the fittest." This was made up by Herbert Spencer, who was a proponent of "Social Darwinism," which is a departure from what Darwin meant by his theory.
Yeah sorry to interrupt your debate with him, but I got rules! :o)
It's amazing to me how many Christians are simply instructed on which bits of slander they should utter in regards to Darwin, a man who not only can't defend himself, but already DID!
I've never read or heard anything that Hitler said that addressed slow biological change in plants and animals, and I never heard any kind of hate-speech from Darwin.
I did however read and hear a lot from Hitler about his pet god.
JustThink00 - B.S. Darwin didn't say we should get rid of millions of humans. He mainly commented on how plants and animals change. That's a far cry from any Nazi philosophy!
To ignore Hitler's staunch religiosity is to avoid the obvious. Sure Atheists have committed crimes, but religion brings a whole soap opera full of reasons to abuse people.
We Atheists don't have a playbook that instructs us to oppress people. There's really no comparison!
The challenge isn't to demonstrate the narrow margins of difference in good behavior, but to demonstrate the wide margins of bad behavior. Among the most brutal inhumanity ever committed by people against other people have been done in the name of religion. Would an atheist come up with an inquisition? A crusade? A suicide bomb attack?
"Name an altruistic action a religious person would not do" was not my challenge. I would guess that any altruistic action a religious person would do, a non-religious person would be just as likely to do.
As for "lumping beliefs together," one need not even press on beyond the fact all of them are almost definitely incorrect. I don't care about fantasy that makes people credit themselves with being more moral. I prefer reality.
-- steal is because it's against the rules, and you fear punishment, THEN YOU ARE NOT A GOOD PERSON, you just follow rules and fear punishment.
Who is the better child? The one who behaves because she knows that her actions affect the happiness and well being of others, or the one who is afraid of getting a spanking and knows that she's going to get some ice cream later if she behaves?
If you're a good person, you're a good person whether or not you believe in ridiculous Bible stories. In fact, you're a better person if you can see them as immoral when they are. If you're a bad person, you're a bad person regardless of what you "believe."
Do you mean to tell me the only thing that's keeping you from stealing is the Ten Commandments? You don't steal, not because it's immoral to steal, but because an ancient rule book tells you not to? If the only reason you don't --
- either, and if I was, I would want to stop it because it was brutal insanity. Now I am held responsible for Adam's sin and Jesus crucifixion, even though I wasn't present for either event.
Then to top it off, who gets redeemed? The peacemakers? The altruistic? The philanthropists? The teachers? The wise? The good parents? NO. The people who get rewarded are THE CREDULOUS. The people who are gullible enough to believe this BS and think it's good are the people who get saved.
The whole concept of Christianity is immoral because it is based on concepts of vicarious guilt, vicarious redemption, and rewarding belief over deed.
I am told I am guilty of the sin of Adam. What part did I play? How am I guilty of the actions of someone I never met (and let's be honest, someone who never existed)? And then, to redeem me, God had himself killed in human form to impress, apparently himself, to redeem mankind (why not just forgive?), and I was not there for that action--
Later, David is referred to as being something like, "one with God's own heart."
So I guess God is perfectly fine with being an adulterer, power abuser, conniver and murderer, just so long as you apologize to HIM. David never made it right, after all, how could he? He REPENTED, and that apparently makes everything perfectly OK, even though the people who he screwed over had their lives ruined or ended.
I used to be a Bible-believing, born again Christian, and there is nobody who knows the flaws and lies and immorality of Christianity better that someone who used ti be under its spell.
If someone steals, and then repents, THEY ARE STILL GUILTY, because the person they stole from is STILL SCREWED, and to think they are forgiven just because they apologized to an IMAGINARY being is patently immoral.
Xzenoangel - I've read the Bible plenty. I suggest that you read it, if you think God is about forgiveness. His own son had to suffer, and didn't need to!
I don't understand something as a Christian believer. If you are an atheist, why do you even worry about if you were baptized to begin with? Your choice. More power to ya.
If you've become an atheist, you have to come out to your family and friends and face quite a bit of scrutiny. You also notice that people label their children with their parents' beliefs before the kids decide what they actually believe for themselves- so it's not worrying about the actual baptism, it's more in response to cultural norms.
I submitted a video response- Since too many of us have been criticized for only targeting Christianity with these de-baptisms, I had my own de bat mitzvah ritual.
Many Atheists think a de-baptism is just silly and pointless. They're usually the Atheists who always had a choice about religion or Atheism.
But for millions of other Atheists, religion wasn't a choice, it was forced. So when we finally get the ability to change that, we'd like to do it our way, and right the wrong as we see fit. A reversal ceremony seems like the obvious solution for some Atheists who feel that religion IS important, even to us.
Okay...I think I get it. It sounds like there's some kind of therapeutic value in the exercise. I guess that makes sense.
Therefore I withdraw the comment about this particular group of atheists and publicly apologize for lumping them in with those other "wacked out" atheists.
nmcnmb - Are you saying that people without religion don't help people in need? Really??
The whole idea to help humans instead of helping a god is humanism, but if you need a list of secular charities and help organizations, you can easily find that. You can start with the United Way and the Red Cross.
But really, why would a god care, and why would a religious person care about helping people in the here and now...if there's an eternal heaven waiting? Because they know people are real.
Well I guess I'd call it sarcasm. Point is, when does Hitchens have anything good to say about religion. Perhaps he does...but I thought his shtick was atheism.
Besides..I was commenting to the response from someone who stated that these people were involved in this practice because they wanted to "make fun" of people of faith..
He doesn't have anything particularly good to say about religion. However he makes a good point. Religious people (of all religions) make the case that their faith is the cause of everything that is good, and the primary remedy/defense against everything that is bad. Then when adherents of their religion do something bad, I.E. The inquisition, 9/11, witch trials, pogroms, etc. apologists act like the religion itself has nothing to do with it, which is disingenuous, and they make no good argument
Your point makes sense to me. But I don't know if I agree with Hitchens if he's implying that religious people do more evil things.
Certainly ostensible religious people do evil things and try to attach a religious justification for their actions. But there are plenty of non-religious people doing evil things as well.
When "religious people" do evil things, I don't believe that the tenets of their religion condone such evil. At least I hope not.
I'm sure you will find that the number of atheist inquisitors and suicide bombers is considerably lower than religious inquisitors and suicide bombers (perhaps due to the fact that they don't exist).
As for religion not condoning evil actions, I think you would come to quite the opposite conclusion, should you actually crack open the Bible or the Koran. Both are loaded with direct commands to kill or humiliate nonbelievers and apostates. (New and Old Testaments, btw)
I have to admit I'm don't know what's in the Koran and I'm definitely no biblical scholar. But I don't hear these mainstream religions condoning evil deeds.
Just because religion is so prevalent within society, is it fair to attribute it as the cause of evil? Surely a large percentage of serial killers may have claimed some religious affiliation, but was there a cause and effect?
There definitely was cause and effect in the Salem Witch Trials, the Inquisition, the Crusades, and in modern times in such places as Northern Ireland, Israel, Lebanon, and dozens of other places.
The reason people aren't burned alive or stoned to death for their beliefs these days is due only to the fact that the Church no longer wields absolute authority in much of modern civilization, and that is a rather new development. There are parts of the world that are not as fortunate as secular US
Certainly you must personally know some folks who don't subscribe to a religion, or don't subscribe to yours.
What percentage of them would you estimate are evil?
This should be a fun tennis match.
It's hard to say though, since, clearly most religious people don't subscribe to the "stone them to death" approach to sin anymore (at least in the west). I would say, however, that this is not due to religion being "good," but much more due to the fact that religion no longer holds power.
I thought we were getting somewhere, but if you're going to make fallacious arguments like this, I have to assume you don't understand causality.
Now, if people who had SS#'s killed people who didn't have SS#'s thinking that they would get a wonderful, although highly improbable reward for doing so, then we would have something approaching a good analogy for religiously motivated atrocities.
As it stands, 100% of suicide bombers are religiously motivated, and 0% are atheists.
I could point out more core religious beliefs that are immoral, if you like, which make 100% of religious believers immoral to an extent. Then there's the fact that 100% of religious believers believe in things for which they have no logical reason to believe, and are, hence, most likely wrong. Being "with the crowd" doesn't make a mistaken belief not mistaken. It is possible that 100% of the world's population could be in agreement, and still be wrong.
Also, many of the tenets of religion are patently immoral. Vicarious redemption is a biggie. Bob steals from Scott. Bob feels bad and apologizes to God. God forgives Bob. Scott is still screwed. Bonus round! Scott prays to God to get his stuff back. God does nothing. Scott's friends console him by telling him that "God works in mysterious ways." Bonus bonus round! Bob goes to heaven because he believes in highly improbable events. Scott goes to hell for not believing
Here in the Midwest, sometimes it seems like the only "meeting of the minds" occuring in the world is in a laboratory. Thank you for showing that even "regular people" can do more than pray.
American Atheists still has their national conventions over Easter Weekend. It's just easier and cheapter to travel and stay in a hotel over that weekend than any other weekend througout the year.
johnmichaelMTBC - You should also be aware that many people take great offense to the statement "I'll pray for you." It's like you're telling us "You're wrong, but I'll fix you, and you should thank me, fool." lol!
I'm looking at Texas in a whole new light. I didn't know there were any free-thinking people in TX, only churches as far as the eye could see, punctuated by mega-churches now and then.
How refreshing! Go TX! (the free thinkers, anyway)
nobody is religious by default. just like political views, religion needs to be passed on by parents for it to continue.

Negativepositiv 2 years ago
If you're a good person, you're a good person whether or not you believe in ridiculous Bible stories. In fact, you're a better person if you can see them as immoral when they are. If you're a bad person, you're a bad person regardless of what you "believe."
Do you mean to tell me the only thing that's keeping you from stealing is the Ten Commandments? You don't steal, not because it's immoral to steal, but because an ancient rule book tells you not to? If the only reason you don't --
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
- either, and if I was, I would want to stop it because it was brutal insanity. Now I am held responsible for Adam's sin and Jesus crucifixion, even though I wasn't present for either event.
Then to top it off, who gets redeemed? The peacemakers? The altruistic? The philanthropists? The teachers? The wise? The good parents? NO. The people who get rewarded are THE CREDULOUS. The people who are gullible enough to believe this BS and think it's good are the people who get saved.
Patently immoral.
Negativepositiv 2 years ago

Negativepositiv 2 years ago
Look at the story of King David.
David bonks a girl and gets her pregnant.
He calls the woman's husband back from battle so that he will bonk her too, and not know the child came from someone else.
The guy decides to do his duty and stay in the war.
David responds by having the guy sent to the front lines to die, and he does.
David then feels bad and repents.
God FORGIVES David.
THE GUY IS STILL DEAD AND THE GUY'S WIFE IS STILL KNOCKED UP BY DAVID.
How is this moral?

So Kent Hovind must not have been a real Christian then, since he refused to pay his taxes, huh?
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
I used to be a Bible-believing, born again Christian, and there is nobody who knows the flaws and lies and immorality of Christianity better that someone who used ti be under its spell.
If someone steals, and then repents, THEY ARE STILL GUILTY, because the person they stole from is STILL SCREWED, and to think they are forgiven just because they apologized to an IMAGINARY being is patently immoral.

I don't understand something as a Christian believer. If you are an atheist, why do you even worry about if you were baptized to begin with? Your choice. More power to ya.
BCPowerman 2 years ago
If you've become an atheist, you have to come out to your family and friends and face quite a bit of scrutiny. You also notice that people label their children with their parents' beliefs before the kids decide what they actually believe for themselves- so it's not worrying about the actual baptism, it's more in response to cultural norms.

If you don't believe in a supreme being...
why jump through all these hoops?
Typical "wacked out atheists".
nmcnmb 2 years ago
nmcnmb - Good question! ...I guess. lol

RE: "Um, for fun? And to make fun of secularists using their own ridiculous practice?"
Um, at least the people of faith do a few positive things with their time like feed and clothe the poor.
And what do these folks do?
Make fun of others whom they don't agree with.
nmcnmb 2 years ago
nmcnmb - Are you saying that people without religion don't help people in need?

Re: "nmcnmb - Are you saying that people without religion don't help people in need? Really??"
Nope. I was responding to the fella that said they do this (de-baptism) "for fun" and "to make fun of others".
Therefore, to me this appears to be a big fat waste of time.
nmcnmb 2 years ago
Ok then. It sure seemed to be that though.
Having fun isn't a waste of time. As long as no one gets hurt, people need to let loose sometimes.
aajoeyjo 2 years ago
Secular people are no less likely to be altruistic than religious people.
Hitchens's challenge:
Name an altruistic action that a religious person would do that a secular person would not.
Now name a wicked or evil action that a religious person would do that a secular person would never even conceive of doing.
I'm sure you will find the second question much more easily answered.
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
negativepositiv...
Hitchens? Oh...now there's an impartial, non biased, 100% objective point of view.
nmcnmb 2 years ago
Ad Hominem arguments like that don't compensate for the fact that you don't have a good answer to the challenge.
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
Well I guess I'd call it sarcasm. Point is, when does Hitchens have anything good to say about religion. Perhaps he does...but I thought his shtick was atheism.
Besides..I was commenting to the response from someone who stated that these people were involved in this practice because they wanted to "make fun" of people of faith..
nmcnmb 2 years ago
He doesn't have anything particularly good to say about religion. However he makes a good point. Religious people (of all religions) make the case that their faith is the cause of everything that is good, and the primary remedy/defense against everything that is bad. Then when adherents of their religion do something bad, I.E. The inquisition, 9/11, witch trials, pogroms, etc. apologists act like the religion itself has nothing to do with it, which is disingenuous, and they make no good argument
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
Your point makes sense to me. But I don't know if I agree with Hitchens if he's implying that religious people do more evil things.
Certainly ostensible religious people do evil things and try to attach a religious justification for their actions. But there are plenty of non-religious people doing evil things as well.
When "religious people" do evil things, I don't believe that the tenets of their religion condone such evil. At least I hope not.
nmcnmb 2 years ago
I'm sure you will find that the number of atheist inquisitors and suicide bombers is considerably lower than religious inquisitors and suicide bombers (perhaps due to the fact that they don't exist).
As for religion not condoning evil actions, I think you would come to quite the opposite conclusion, should you actually crack open the Bible or the Koran. Both are loaded with direct commands to kill or humiliate nonbelievers and apostates. (New and Old Testaments, btw)
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
I have to admit I'm don't know what's in the Koran and I'm definitely no biblical scholar. But I don't hear these mainstream religions condoning evil deeds.
Just because religion is so prevalent within society, is it fair to attribute it as the cause of evil? Surely a large percentage of serial killers may have claimed some religious affiliation, but was there a cause and effect?
nmcnmb 2 years ago
There definitely was cause and effect in the Salem Witch Trials, the Inquisition, the Crusades, and in modern times in such places as Northern Ireland, Israel, Lebanon, and dozens of other places.
The reason people aren't burned alive or stoned to death for their beliefs these days is due only to the fact that the Church no longer wields absolute authority in much of modern civilization, and that is a rather new development. There are parts of the world that are not as fortunate as secular US
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
So let me ask you this. Certainly you must personally know some folks who subscribe to some kind of religion.
What percentage would you estimate are evil?
nmcnmb 2 years ago
Certainly you must personally know some folks who don't subscribe to a religion, or don't subscribe to yours.
What percentage of them would you estimate are evil?
This should be a fun tennis match.
It's hard to say though, since, clearly most religious people don't subscribe to the "stone them to death" approach to sin anymore (at least in the west). I would say, however, that this is not due to religion being "good," but much more due to the fact that religion no longer holds power.
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
I'd guess that there are fewer evil people out there who DON'T subscribe to religion vs a larger group of evil people who DO subscribe to religion.
Again though, I believe it's because the institution of religion is so common among citizens of so many cultures.
It's like suggesting that because 100% of chain saw murderers have social security numbers that social security numbers lead to violent behavior.
nmcnmb 2 years ago
I thought we were getting somewhere, but if you're going to make fallacious arguments like this, I have to assume you don't understand causality.
Now, if people who had SS#'s killed people who didn't have SS#'s thinking that they would get a wonderful, although highly improbable reward for doing so, then we would have something approaching a good analogy for religiously motivated atrocities.
As it stands, 100% of suicide bombers are religiously motivated, and 0% are atheists.
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
RE: "As it stands, 100% of suicide bombers are religiously motivated, and 0% are atheists."
I agree that religious groups that call for evil deeds are indeed evil.
BTW...you didn't really answer the question as to what percentage of people of faith that you personally know you'd consider as evil.
You started out with "it's hard to say" which I agree it is. But just your best guess.
nmcnmb 2 years ago
I could point out more core religious beliefs that are immoral, if you like, which make 100% of religious believers immoral to an extent. Then there's the fact that 100% of religious believers believe in things for which they have no logical reason to believe, and are, hence, most likely wrong. Being "with the crowd" doesn't make a mistaken belief not mistaken. It is possible that 100% of the world's population could be in agreement, and still be wrong.
Negativepositiv 2 years ago
RE : "which make 100% of religious believers immoral to an extent."
So do I understand your hypothesis to say that 100% of religious believers are immoral?
nmcnmb 2 years ago
ALL of the below are immoral.
Believing that beliefs count more than deeds.
Believing that you can be forgiven vicariously for wrongdoing.
Believing in inherited "original" sin.
Believing that eternal punishment for finite crimes is fair and just.
Believing that not loving God is a punishable offense.
Not subjecting one's own beliefs to the same scrutiny used to judge the validity of any other idea.
Should I go on?
