Mounting a video camera somewhere up front sounds like a really good idea. I can't see the FAA saying too much, as this would definately enhance safety. I would mount it somewhere clear of propwash though.
These days, a nice little camera [like the backup camera on new cars] can be placed on the fint-bottom of the aircraft's nose to allow the pilot to see in front of him.
Poor forward visibility is common with tail-dragger aircraft while on the ground. I don't a see ground helper in the video. In any case, the car was parked in the wrong place by a ground worker and it wasn't the pilot's fault. I believe this airshow was at a Navy base, so I'm sure somebody got yelled at afterward.
all you kids who talk about not seeing that car...you don't know anything about these aircraft. here's lesson 1: in ww2 the planes were bult with really big powerful engines on the front. they raised the front of the plane to make room for the big props. these were were small planes and that means the nose was pointed high towards the sky and it blocks the veiw of the ground in front of the plane till the tail was up in the air. and it was done by every country with their fighters..
One of the first things you learn being around airplanes is to KEEP CLEAR OF TAXIWAYS. That, and being aware of potential 'blind spots' of taxiing aircraft (like big radial-engined taildraggers). It's just that basic.
The airplane is probably a modified AT-6, as I doubt any original NA-50s or NA-68s survive. I'd be hacked off that the airshow support-personnel allowed a car to be parked smack in the middle of the ramp---but airshows are often run by volunteers, and a lot of them are non-pilots. (Ran into LOTS of that on the circuit.)
That most definitely was an NA-50. I know because I was at that Airshow at the Brunswick Naval Airbase in Maine back in 1989. I was right there when this happened and was just to the left of where this video was taken. I remember quite clearly saying to someone at the show to watch this plane as it was not zig-zagging as they should with tail draggers and that I bet it would hit the car parked on the tarmac. You should have heard it in person and seen how far it threw the hood of that car.
Someone to marshal the aircraft out more than likely would have prevented this. Even if no marshal, then sadly the onus falls on the pilot to ensure the way is safe to proceed.
No-one in their right mind taxis a tail dragger without fishtailing from side to side in order to check out the front view. Better still, get someone else to ride on the wing and give you hand signals !
Dauntless is right, it's an NA-50, notice the depression after the cockpit before the engine compartment. And for the dumbasses who thought it was a P-47, notice the early war markings. Way to go retards.
I think it's a P64 a development of the AT-6 Texan. The only other possibility is that it might be a hawk 75 or the plane the P40B was developed out of.
holy shit get out some books or look up the P-47 and realise that they never head features like prop spinners...or even looked like this NA-50 mock-up....this is not a fucking P-47 how ingnorant are you people? It's just a replica of an airplane that pre-dated the P-47 by a couple of years....for everyone's sake.. don't comment if you can't get your facts straight.
The Bf 109 is more agile can make short work of a P-47 with it's heavy German cannon, while the latter is lightly armed with only machine guns. And I also think the car has received alot more punishment than the aircraft.
The P-47 was far from lightly armed...Mounting 8 .50 calibre machine guns (4 per wing) it was a devastating ground attack aircraft as well as an extremely capable fighter. Though the german BF-109 mounted 20mm cannon, the cannon fired slower and had less range than the Thunderbolts guns. As it has been proven time and again in the history of air combat , it is the man not the machine that decides the outcome of victory
And as far as the video is concerned the pilot should have been doing what is known a "s"ing; yawing the aircraft left and right as he taxi's so as to see what is in front of him. And it is ultimately the pilot who is responsible for the wreck, even though the car shouldnt have been there
isnt th visibility forward very bad in these planes when ther on th ground? just a thought. im sure they used 2 hav 2 got directed alot of th time when taxiing :S
How the hell do you not see-... oh yeah, it's a taildragger, you can't see over the nose while taxiing, ya have to fishtail it. I guess that guys got some work and insurance papers ahead of him, but who's the dumbfuck who parked the car there, he's responsible.
how is he responsible? what's stationary hit by what's moving, it's the latter's fault. I spose when you crash into people's front rooms, you get out and start shouting at them
Parking a car anywhere on a runway or taxiing lane is incredible stupid and should be rated as a crime. Same as parking your front rooms on the highway.
Its unlikely that the car was suppose to be sitting there on the ramp. If you park your car on a train track is it the train's fault for not stopping too?

You need a clear taxiway and a good ground crew to direct those planes because of their huge blind spot.

The pilot was not at fault, as determined by the investigation. It was the ground marshal who left the car in the active taxi area.

The final blame was with the airport worker who incorrectly parked the car in the taxi area.

I watched it again and you're right, the car should not have been there in the first place.

Yes. And if I'm remembering correctly, it was a Navy enlisted ground marshal who parked the car...and the Navy paid to fix the plane.

It's a North American NA-50 or P-64. Basically a fighter version of the T-6 produced for Export.
Very rare aircraft, and this is the only survivor in the US.
