The mechs we have now carry a serious problem. They move so slowly anyone could just fire a rocket at it, or set a team of assault rifles to tear it up. The mechs will only become a valuable asset in war with the addition of a propulsion system like boosters, and pretty damn thick plating. Which requires a lot of gas. A LOT.

If you actually watch or read the scfi manga or anime series. Gundams run on electricity or nuclear energy battery, charge every now or so often. As for movement speed if they can get a jet to move at mach speed. I don't see any problem.
