Has to do with the necessary long tube length, players' arm length - ergonomics.I don't have an alto, but my brother's Trevor James alto flute comes with two headjoints. Some players prefer them. I prefer using the straight, non-curved, one. Incidentally, the Trevor James alto is a very nice flute.
@Crishaana : Yes, I have a normal open-holed C concert flute, with a low B footjoint - i.e. smaller than an alto (G) flute. Keep in mind the British (maybe others) call the Alto flute a Bass flute. You can read why on Wikipedia by searching on "alto flute". I would say the Alto flute would be especially useful for raga or flute solo pieces because of its almost bansuri-like sound, but the bansuri (Krisna's instrument) to me has a more interesting and complex sound.
@Crishaana : Your flute is a regular concert flute in C. (i.e. the one you're playing on "Flute Improvisation with the Hare Krisnas"). So, you don't have an alto flute (unless you have a second one you're hiding from me?). If you cover all the holes (keys) on a C flute it sounds like a real regular C. If you cover all the holes on an alto flute it sounds G. To get an alto flute to sound a "C" you have to play the concert-flute "F" fingering on it.

@jazzflutist I'm reading that the alto flute is pitched in the key of G. I thought my alto flute was in the key of C :/
