katanas were made to cut and stab. the way its shaped puts pressure on the hardened steel on the back of the sword so it doesnt bend at all, and theyre really hard on the edges but soft in the middle so the can bend side to side (but they wont anyways when stabbing) in combat and the hrd steel is hrd to break so it doesnt chip very easily. I agree, a broadsword can do just as much damage but a katana in the hands of someone who knows what theyre doing can win damn near any fight

1.) Katanas are the shittiest swords ever made. They're fragile and you have to baby them. They will dull after one fight.

2.) They didn't "invent" the concept of anime. Astro boy (the first real Japanime) was whole heartedly inspired by Mickey Mouse & co.. So, once again, you have America to thank for everything.

@BloodPlusPwn I agree with 2 and 3 but Katanas were renowned for its cutting ability. They're made of high and low carbon steel. The high carbon steel gives the blade its sharpness but does make the blade more brittle. Thats were the low carbon steel comes into the mix, it help the blade absorb more impacts without breaking. Its also helps keep the blade from becoming blunt. I look at swords like guns you have to take care of it to keep working.:)

Either way, the best made katanas would dull after decapitating someone. While yes, you won't find a sword that will decapitate faster than a fresh, well made katana, a blunt one is completely useless.

Whereas at least with a broadsword you have enough weight to cut even after it dulls and it's much less likely to break on a parry.

Either way, it doesn't even matter this day in age I suppose lol

Katanas are awful swords for war.

They are superb at slicing but as so fragile it's just pointless. A broad sword can do as much damage dull and weathered. And a scimitar or something of the sort can cut just as good as a Katana with much more weight and reliability.

A fresh Katana with a skilled swordsman can do detrimental damage to flesh, a blunt broadsword with a total amateur can pierce armor and shield and break katanas.

I'm sorry, but I just don't think they're worth it.

A novice, he wouldn't be amazing, but still good enough to get through a broadsword wielding lunatic. Difference between tools and machines: A machine consists of several components and has it's own life that needs to be maintained and usually serves multiple functions. A tool is only as good as the wielder. A machine can be BETTER than the wielder. A sword can not be better than the wielder since its a tool.

No, of course not, but katanas are not designed to bludgeon their way through an inch of metal, that's what war hammers, broad swords, maces and flails are for. Katanas are meant to go for the weak points, all those big open joints on heavy armor, and definitely not meant for long duels.

Also, not just in Japan will a sword blow kill. Anywhere on the planet, with a pointed fucking stick even, a direct blow will kill.

@Shurryy No one ever said anything about auto-win either. Skill determines the winner in a fight, nothing else. All I'm saying about katanas is that they are not meant for duels or fencing. Katanas are meant for a one-hit attack, which is not guaranteed to work. If that attack fails then the wielder of the katana will die very shortly. The katana's light weight and shape allow for great maneuverability to help make sure that blow connects properly.
