Being hit by a tsunami wave, or getting caught in a flood, looks more harmless than it is. Also, this was Thailand, where casualties were about 5,000 dead. In Indonesia, more than 100,000
Depends on the size of the wave, but two feet of moving water sweeps cars away, while even half a foot can knock you down.
A question of scale (hard to see from a distance). Look carefully at the beginning - those little obects on the beach are people. That wave completely engulfs the beach with a 20 ft wall of water. Anyone still there had no chance. (Banda Ache wave was 60 feet).
Rememeber, regular 20 ft waves you see simply crash. A tsunami wave goes back for miles - it does NOT crash. Essentially, the whole ocean rises up many feet for a period of minutes. Very different and very scary.
@odiumimbues well try being bombarded by cars trees roofs glass etc while trying to keep your head above water while the water moves 75-200 mph as it hits

And that's what you get for deciding to build a town on the beach of an island.

It's not the water that kills you, it's the debris- cars, heavy furniture, etc. And a lot of people don't know how to swim, yknow.
