It sounds like you've really segregated yourself, maybe due to some traumatic past events, or the mindset of someone who raised you. I'm a college student; I work 40+ hour weeks and take a 2+ hour commute to college because I'm unable to get any college grants, scholarships, or local housing, and can you guess why? Every online application ends as soon as I list my race as "white."
