  • This is so great. When you have to go so low to compare "What a server sounds like" it is clear that what brand fails on so many other levels. Also, the sounds is only an issue for... hum, lets say 4 mins. LOL, so the HP beats IBM for 4 mins wow

  • I would *NEVER* buy hardware because it is quieter than the other. I think most intelligent beings (those who haven't been wined and dined by IBM Sales ppl), would put noise as the absolute lowest criteria in equipment selection. Reliability, Price, Value, Support, and yes, the quietness factor, in case this needs to run next to your desk... ;)

  • I have a c3000 that I built a couple months ago, only reason that fan is at 100% is because those retards do not know how to reboot the on-board administrator. If the system is shutdown unexpectedly you have to turn it back on. Then connect to the on-board administrator and reset it, as that controls fan speed as well. Then the fans go back to normal speed.

  • HAHA IBM are so scared of HP blades, they didnt give it time for the management module to come up of they did this test with the OA out, there is no way they are that loud in normal operation.

So basically what they are saying here is if you want a quite system when it starts up (are they saying you have to restart the IBM blade chassis a lot) or you are so stupid you dont plug in the OA buy IBM. Talk about old technology.

Hey IBM show us ur hotswap HDD, wats that you dont have any?

  • I don't trust IBM to tell the truth. Their blade sales are nowhere close to HP!

  • You're going to have to show numbers, with source, to back that up before anyone will believe you.

  • 1. I'll take horsepower and power management over quiet any day of the week. My computer room has a door. It works well.

    2. If the HP chassis is properly configured (which is not rocket science), the fans only kick into high gear when it is fully loaded and all nodes are running at 100% CPU (a very unlikely scenario).

    3. HP's superior performance and system management help my business more than IBM's marketing fluff.

  • Havent tested C3000 but we have 5 C7000 and they are nowhere near that loud unless you degrade to cooling system, using a failed fan, removing a fan etc.

  • what a load of BS, I went to a trade show last week and you could hardly hear the c3000even though it was fully loaded. My guess is that IBM is not playing fair and did not load the helath drivers. Teh BladeSystem S was at the same conference and looked like an old fridge on its side, HP has a much better offering in Tower version too, no wonder they have twice the market share of IBM now. On this performance how long until IBM sells this off to Lenovo too..

  • I just need to plug it in and power it on

  • HP stands for horse power, or deafening power wasting.

  • IBM telling us how bad HP is!!! well there's defo no foul play there then!!! Talk about your own product instead of slagging others off, Why dont you do a video on your server support, yeah thought so...

  • Who cares about the sound? We only care about the POWER CONSUMPTION. HP C3000 gives you more bang for the buck. Very modular. We can plug in Compute and/or Storage blades in one enclosure with GIGE or Infiniband or FC connectivity.

  • Video is crap. We have a c3000 chassis in our office and it is NO WHERE near that loud. They must of inserted the microphone into the blade chassis. In our office we dont have a computer room.; this sits in a corner near my desk and I can barely hear it. Videos like this make me laugh.

  • Hello Jill2625,

IBM focuses on the sound differences in this video because some of our clients have told us that loud servers are extremely distracting in their offices.

I'm glad to hear that you did not experience issues with noise. We tested both IBM and HP's systems in our acoustics lab and our tests were validated by a third party acoustics expert. HP "Shorty" was judged twice as loud as BladeCenter S.

    Thank you for the comments.

David Tareen - IBM Marketing Manager.

  • "IBM focuses on the sound differences in this video because some of our clients have told us that loud servers are extremely distracting in their offices." They are YOUR clients, this means that IBM servers are extremely distracting in their offices, isn't it?

  • Its so blatantly obvious that the IBM Blade Server S is a FAAAAAAAR superior product. How HP sells a single config of this garbage system is a mystery to me. I would easily pay more for the Blade system. If it werent for HPs $200 PC market funding their server organization I wouldnt see them last for more then a year.

  • keep watching, dude, you'll see more and more mysteries :D :D :D

  • Anything that loud has to be fast :P

  • I'm pretty sure that a server won't be so quiet unless you run it idle. And a server won't be so noisy unless you run it in heavy load. Any justification?

  • Wow, you pretty obviously have no idea what your talking about, eh?

  • Wow, you pretty obviously get the main "idea" regarding this video. May I know what is the noise spec of a datacenter server? Do administrators wear any active/passive noise cancellation equipment? And how many administrators today have to work side by side with those quiet/noisy machines?

  • Answers to your questions:

    1. IBM BladeCenter S = 63dB, HP BladeSystem c3000 = 70dB.

    2. Administrators do not wear noise cancellation equipment. IBM offers an acoustic attenuation module for their BladeCenter E chassis that reduces the noise level by up to 6dB.

    3. These model of blade chassis are developed for SMB customers who may not have a sophisticated datacenter. The original design was for a small office environment, thus the need for a quiet product.
