Firstly, arbitrary price triggers are silly as they don't take into consideration normal seasonal fluctuations or possible exogenous shock. There is a difference.
This amendment he suggests is a ploy and a gift to big oil. Even if we could magically tap every possible reserve in the US right now, gas/oil prices wouldn't budge. All oil is pooled and sold on the open global market.
Need I even mention the current disaster in the Gulf? Even a "clean" operation has a significant environmental impact. Even if we could shave a few cents off the price of a barrel of oil, anything we save will be lost in the environmental and business losses caused by opening up our shorelines to off-shore drilling.
The only way to lower the price of gas/oil is to lower demand by switching adopting a green economy, which if you're like other Righties, you're probably also against.
@mikepalomino I not against going green by any stretch. In fact I support legislation that would force car manufacturers to certain mpg standards. What I don't support are diesel emissions standards that arbitrarily drive up the price of diesel, while at the same time decreasing the mpg for heavy trucks.
The low mpg vehicles need to go away; any vehicle that gets less than 25 mpg on the highway needs to be off the roads completely by 2012.

I'm a pragmatic person. If I estimated that opening the shores to drilling would lower gas prices significantly I would support drilling as an acceptable trade off between risk & reward. But as it stands our best bet is better mileage on our vehicles. Hopefully with the cooperation of manufacturers we can continue moving further in that direction in the years to come.

Wanting alternatives to fossil fuels isn't going to make them work. Currently there are no viable alternatives to replace fossil fuels. So switching away from fossil fuels now would be FOOLISH, which is why the left is in favor of it.

you also need hooked on phonics, it's not 3% but LESS THAN 3%. Every car that's running on underinflated tired can see a 3% increase. But not all cars are running low and only a percentage of all oil is used in cars. So the tire inflation thing is just a gimmick.
Here's the thing. Even if we do drill offshore, we won't get that oil until around 2030. Taking the suggestion of properly inflating our tires is both an immediate and environmentally friendly option, whereas offshore drilling hurts tourism and the environment. Plus, experts predict that it will cost around $100 dollars to get each barrel of oil out of offshore drilling. Who's going to pay for that? If you're so against higher taxes, why on earth would you be for offshore drilling?
It would take 2-5 years to get the oil, not 20. Besides, we've been having that discussion in our country for over 10 years. If drilling off shore and in ANWR had been permitted when oil companies first asked, we'd be using that oil already, meaning the prices wouldn't have gone up as much as it has. Second, the tire pressure thing will lower consumption less than 3%, meaning it's next to useless. Only ignorant hippies are against drilling now.

One must purchase a permit just to search an area to see if oil is there. So an increase in permits is no guarantee that there's more oil being pumped right now.

I drive a semitruck and my brother is a farmer living in the Midwest of USA. He, and our farming neighbors, rely on oil to fuel the tractors, combines, grain dryers, etc and also for the fertilizers etc needed to grow the crops that feed you and me. I rely on oil to fuel and lubricate my rig, make the tires, etc so I can deliver all the crops my brother and neighbors produce. Hybrids etc will not help us in the foreseeable future. We need affordable oil and fuel.

The oil that we would get from ANWR would reduce our oil imports by only 2% by 2020.We have 2% of the worlds oil reserves and we are 4% of the world population, yet we consume 25% of oil produced worldwide & 2/3 goes to transportation.We can improve fuel economy standards of SUV"s and light trucks by 2011. This will save us 1 million barrels of oil a day, much more than we can expect from ANWR and these bebefits will not run out.
first of all, its not just tire inflation, its also tuning up your car... second of all, not drilling in general, just the offshore drilling that they are proposing.... neither is actually a great way to lower prices... but one helps the environment, and one hurts it... it goes unsaid that filling up tires does not create gas.... but it will actually lower gas prices because of less demand (see: economics 101, day one, supply and demand)

First, China told it's people to stop driving so the air would be cleaner for the Olympics. Secondly, Bush mentioned the possibility of drilling. This amendment he suggests is a ploy and a gift to big oil. Even if we could magically tap every possible reserve in the US right now, gas/oil prices wouldn't budge. All oil is pooled and sold on the open global market.

Need I even mention the current disaster in the Gulf? Even a "clean" operation has a significant environmental impact. Even if we could shave a few cents off the price of a barrel of oil, anything we save will be lost in the environmental and business losses caused by opening up our shorelines to off-shore drilling.
The only way to lower the price of gas/oil is to lower demand by switching adopting a green economy, which if you're like other Righties, you're probably also against.

@mikepalomino I not against going green by any stretch. In fact I support legislation that would force car manufacturers to certain mpg standards. What I don't support are diesel emissions standards that arbitrarily drive up the price of diesel, while at the same time decreasing the mpg for heavy trucks.
The low mpg vehicles need to go away; any vehicle that gets less than 25 mpg on the highway needs to be off the roads completely by 2012.

I'm a pragmatic person. If I estimated that opening the shores to drilling would lower gas prices significantly I would support drilling as an acceptable trade off between risk & reward. But as it stands our best bet is better mileage on our vehicles. Hopefully with the cooperation of manufacturers we can continue moving further in that direction in the years to come.

Here's the thing. Even if we do drill offshore, we won't get that oil until around 2030. Taking the suggestion of properly inflating our tires is both an immediate and environmentally friendly option, whereas offshore drilling hurts tourism and the environment. Plus, experts predict that it will cost around $100 dollars to get each barrel of oil out of offshore drilling. Who's going to pay for that? If you're so against higher taxes, why on earth would you be for offshore drilling?

It would take 2-5 years to get the oil, not 20. Besides, we've been having that discussion in our country for over 10 years. If drilling off shore and in ANWR had been permitted when oil companies first asked, we'd be using that oil already, meaning the prices wouldn't have gone up as much as it has. Second, the tire pressure thing will lower consumption less than 3%, meaning it's next to useless. Only ignorant hippies are against drilling now.

It's not just about energy for driving. Virtually everything that is manufactured depends upon petroleum at some point. Unless you want to go back to just having things made from stone, leather, and plants, we will need to keep using oil for the time being. Therefore, we had better start developing a domestic source soon, because as soon as Israel attacks Iran, there won't be any oil from the Mideast.

Permits do not mean drilling is taking place or even that oil is there.
One must purchase a permit just to search an area to see if oil is there. So an increase in permits is no guarantee that there's more oil being pumped right now.
You're right that we should ask our leaders. Considering that a barrel of oil cost roughly $58 per barrel when the demonCUNTS took over congress and now costs over $125, after reaching an all time high of $140. Hell yes they have a lot of explaining to do.

I drive a semitruck and my brother is a farmer living in the Midwest of USA. He, and our farming neighbors, rely on oil to fuel the tractors, combines, grain dryers, etc and also for the fertilizers etc needed to grow the crops that feed you and me. I rely on oil to fuel and lubricate my rig, make the tires, etc so I can deliver all the crops my brother and neighbors produce. Hybrids etc will not help us in the foreseeable future. We need affordable oil and fuel.

The oil that we would get from ANWR would reduce our oil imports by only 2% by 2020.We have 2% of the worlds oil reserves and we are 4% of the world population, yet we consume 25% of oil produced worldwide & 2/3 goes to transportation.We can improve fuel economy standards of SUV"s and light trucks by 2011. This will save us 1 million barrels of oil a day, much more than we can expect from ANWR and these bebefits will not run out.

First, China told it's people to stop driving so the air would be cleaner for the Olympics. Secondly, Bush mentioned the possibility of drilling. Because those technologies aren't ready. Solar only works during the day. Wind only when it's blowing. Current battery technology isn't up to the task of helping either. So until someone invents a new battery that makes LiON obsolete, our choices are oil, coal, or nuclear. By all means let's keep researching those, but we NEED energy to use now and until they're ready. Wanting something isn't going to make it happen.

The reason was the technology was so complicated that they cost too much to make, that's why they were lease only. In live near wind farms and know people who work there, there are plenty of times that wind doesn't produce energy. There are two ways to lower prices MORON, lower consumption or raise supply. Absolutely America should do their share in drilling for oil instead of relying on the rest of the world to do so, but to suggest that offshore drilling is a magic cure-all is absolutely absurd... The USA is not a gas company and since many gas companies are on the world market, offshore drilling would have very little effect on the cost of gas... This is especially true when we don't allow this gas to be sold in America, as John McCain has proposed in the past... look it up

Time to explain how oil leases work. One must purchase a lease before finding out if there's oil there. So if you have a lease to drill somewhere but there's no oil there, there's no point in drilling. THAT is why that 68million acres isn't being drilled!
