Since vaccines appeared on the scene people's life expectancy has grown dramatically. If what you said in your comments would be correct then people that lived in the middle ages should have had a life expectancy far greater then ours but we all know that is not true. But one thing, religion wasn't originally used to gain power, it was a mechanism used to explain the unknown.
