@suzaku150 He was going to die from his wounds anyway. He lost an arm and he was shot from some guy in a chopper to protect the commander, Toshi, Kagura, and Shinpachi. His plan to forecfully take over the shinsengumi made him a traitor to the them, but they also knew of his and Toshi's rivalry, grudge, or whatever you want to call it. They let him go out in style: a duel with Toshi. Each ray of light he saw was evidence of each member's acknowledgement to him as a comrade and friend.
