The original stands on its own - this is a different take on it and haunts in a different way. We are all older and wiser since 1982 and a lot (for good and ill) has happened since then. This version evoked that for me.

The damn 1975 novel and 1982 BBC miniseries would have long since been forgotten were it not for the song. From Maire Brennan onward, everyone is so coy as to the exact translation, save only to say that it implies that there are only losers in a war.
