The play is filled with witty and amusing dialogue and is presented in an unconventional (albeit oftentimes crude) way. This movie bores the hell out of me. It's trying to take a play that is both a satire and social commentary and make it into something sentimental.
@allpossibleworlds This is a true story. For all the movies that I've seen with Jeremy Irons in it, how the hell did he not get an Academy Award for any one of them. M. Butterly, Lolita, DAMAGE (my favorite), Dead Ringers, etc. I also look back at his earlier movies and I find that he has gotten so much more passionate and sensual as he grows older. She/he is NOT Japanese...she's CHINESE...she only PLAYED a Japanese character in Madame Butterfly (just like all most of the chicks in Memoirs of a Geisha...Chinese chicks playing Japanese roles).
I think John Lone should have gotten an Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was awesome. Also, how could Rene not know that Song was a man. I taped the movie last night and it showed only "blow jobs and anal sex" NO VAGINA SEX. Even if his BUTTERFLY was a female, she couldn't get pregnant with Anal sex yet he fell for the whole "baby thang". Also, how come he didn't know that all Japanese male actors played female roles in those days? The ending was fitting for Rene and exciting.
@amarettaludia Don't know if you've read the play, but in it Rene is portrayed as an unattractive, bumbling soul who is awkward around women and toward sex. Now, the play is not very explicit in terms of Rene and Song's sexual activity, so the baby thing does make little sense (maybe he ejaculated once when they were "fooling around" and thinks it could have ended up in place accidentially?) Of course, the play isn't meant to be overly plausible. Male actor thing - no room - next reply.

The idea that women should be submissive and passive and that Asian women, due to their culture, are more likely to fulfill this ideal. Song claims modesty is dear to her culture and values to protect her secret - Rene, in his ignorance of true Asian customs believes her. I think it can be assumed he's pretty ignorant in other aspects of their culture as well.
Jeremy Irons is just "bootilicious". Anyone, guy or girl that has to act as a lover of Jeremy Irons will surely be both "sexy and emotional" because Jeremy Irons could make a Sheep look sexy. Jeremy is all about "lust and passion" . . . I'd never kick him out of my bed.
I'm curious does that make John Lone's character gay? Transgender or a crossdresser?
