One of my best times in the 15 years ive been in the ocean was when i lived in San Diego during the 2005 run of swells where it literally was back to back swells for almos two months straight. I spent most of my time at blacks on a lot of really solid, perfect days. Also scored 10-12 foot triple ups at scripps on a really solid windswell, and some perfect days at windansea and other la jolla breaks i wont name. Basically, San Diego kicks major ass in the winter!

I learned to surf at Scripps in 1963, riding the soup! I don't recall every seeing La Jolla Cove break like that. The big surf is usually a little farher north at Wind n Sea beach, which has an off shore reef.

That's right, I should have said south. If you go north you'd be at the Marine Room at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, if it's still there. I was born at La Jolla Cove at the old Scripps hospital, which is now the Scripps Research Clinic.

actually the marine room is SOUTH of scripps. scripps is the area next to the pier. la jolla shores is south of that. the marine room is south of that.

Okay, if we're having a geography lesson, the Marine room is just north of La Jolla Cove. Scripps beach is just south of Scripps pier. The Marine room, to be exact, is one mile south of Scripps pier. La Jolla Shores is in the middle of that costal stretch. The surf, as I recall, tends to be bigger at Scripps, and smallest at the Marine room. I've seen lots of double-overhead days at the Shores, especially on south swells. Blacks beach is north of Scripps pier.

Scripps and LaJolla shores, although adjacent to Black's, are considered to be very kooky spots. However, they often break okay on these winter nortrh swells. Of course, I'm usually out at a place called Little Makaha\ Outside Hogan's when it's that big.

scrips is public, its where all the tourists go - well to La jolla, then scrips is like a 10 min paddle from it.

I can't believe I missed the "Cove". I was gonna start shooting video at Windensea, and it was closed out and no one was out, so I went down to the cliffs. If only, I'd have driven another mile or two up to the cove and Boomer Beach. Talk about your "minute" late and 100 dollars short. By the time I got to Sunset Cliffs it was hazy and over lite by afternoon sun. Good footage you shot at the cove. Marc.
