  • What MaterialIndigo said - all of the sounds really conjure up a picture of a small chamber ensemble performing this rather than a bank of synthesizers. Great!

  • Thanks so much! It also doesn't hurt that, for the music itself, I borrowed a lot from Bela Bartok...

  • This is fantastic, Scott! Awesome job! How do you get your Finale instruments to sound so real? My Finale instruments don't sound nearly that realistic.

  • Thanks! The sounds I got were from MakeMusic: SmartMusicSoftSynth, which I chose in the Audio Units Instruments setup box (MIDI/Audio -> Instrument Setup -> Audio Units Instruments)...Garritan: Instruments for Finale and Apple: DLSMusicDevice should also be available in Audio Units, but MakeMusic has the best quality...I also made sure to choose solo instruments rather than ensemble sounds...I don't remember if MakeMusic was included w/ Finale or if I ordered it...I hope that helps...

  • Ah. I'm using Finale PrintMusic, which is a cheaper edition and does not have the full Garritan orchestra. When writing for strings, I found that the solo violin sound was too harsh for me. Are you layering those string sounds?

  • No, I didn't do any layering of sounds...All the sounds you hear are directly from the MakeMusic samples; the only layering is compositional...If you want/need those sounds, I would recommend the upgrade to Finale 2010...
