It sounded like a traction with the machine running continuously and when the car stared up, I did not hear the motor kick in as I usually do after a few seconds. But I remember riding a brand new hydraulic elevator in an apartment building and I could not hear the motor from inside the car even though the motor room was right outside where I got on.
Does the rear door ever open?

parejopinto says you need a key for the rear door. Until then I was thinking maybe some elevators come with rear doors by default?
