@mallikarjunasj - completely agree... I too don't understand Tamil but love this song... some other Illayraja songs too.. I'd ask some of my Tamil frnds to translate each song.
Billion souls wanting good music, one heart to satisfy, represent the Indianness within all of us to the World. Impossible though, but was achieved already by ARR.
While I agree ARR created a brand image for India crossing borders... he is yet to cross borders in India too.... that said I am his fan too but IR is great.. he did cross boundaries before ARR was the first to lead London Phil Orch. Its just the opportunity and time that works better for some and I think todays media exposure is bigger than what was present yesterday.
In 1993, he wrote a symphony upon invitation for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as to present it live. The old famous but not rejected-or-considered Naushad, MSV, Burman were alive that time. Why, that is another whole new topic!
What happened then to IRs journey with his worldly music?
Decided himself great as if the whole world claps when he wakes up every morning or lost the internet connection thereafter? Something is not right. Come on!
You said about ARR: "He is yet to cross borders in India too ". Who ARR? That is a news to me!
Don't want to talk about IR's symphony journey, that's another whole new topic. I have listened to his independent albums!
All I can hint is there is something called 'Depth' in anything we do irrespective of how, why, where and when? Better not to get fooled by the media buzz!
the only point is every person has an expiry date and sometimes a renewal date :) That said to your earlier question about ARRs boundaries- he is not big in to other languages in India except Tamil and Hindi.. but I still love him I have no issues with that. IR - has done his part and may do more. Now its some body else's turn to take the baton and ARR is definitely leading it by taking it ahead leaps and bounds.. Media buzz is something I don't follow either in India or elsewhere - peace
I don't hate IR either. Have come across many of his un-popular works, rich in content, but not that recognized while I grew up, was always choosy though then; and even today.
When you said ARR is not big in to any language other than Hindi, Tamil, I was not expecting some dialect or state borders literally. Even if that is the case Hindi is our national language, unless somebody changed it at the top level!
Instead was expecting some musical language or style across borders that ARR has traversed so far with his journey, like Carnatic, Hindustani, Ghazal, Persian, Khayal, Bhangra, Qawwali, Thumri, Opera, Salsa, African, Chinese, Caribbean, various western sounds and unknown instruments.
To add more to his repertoire, drummer Sivamani who is another unknown Billy Cobham or Simon Phillips by his talent; makes sounds from his soul even from utensils, broken glass, door, suitcase etc.
Sivamani was not even recognized fully until ARR came, so does many artists like him, found by ARR later was transferred to new boat with love, freedom, innovation and a vision to sail across on purpose. Will sail ever hereafter, led by a virtuoso a.k.a tiny Giant Maestro A.R.Rahman.
Provisioned with a musical compass, pointing 'North South' as usual to satisfy India, 'East West' to satisfy the rest of the world, a 'restless needle' at times to satisfy the 'musical nomads', while keeping his vision always intact!
A.R.Rahman revolutionized the way we hear Indian music nowadays, rejuvenated some of the old classical music as well as the musicians, brought everything together to shed hatred, ego and avoid blood eventually, to bring peace thereby.
He even re-wrote musically our national anthem to sound more patriotic than the original.
Overall ARR made history like Christs AC/BC, a new musical era a.k.a Before Rahman / After Rahman with respect to the world or the Indian music.
- Only few composers, who are specialized in classical, as well compose one for the film, which needs them.
- Hardly any composers, who knows classical or nothing, but can compose for films somehow.
- Only one composer so far knew how to draw line amicably to connect every artists who are classical, non-classical, divided in direction North-East-West-South', diversified, neutral, as well compose for films and cross boundaries.
"ARR played keyboard for Ilayaraja"? True, not only to IR, to many south Indian composers, as a session artist, not as a student or a slave like most people think.
What language IR had barrier? Music? Come on! There is no such thing; only ignorance played a major part! Ilayaraja, a film composer, inclined mostly towards folk, light music, fame abused the classical music he never knew in films, was never a world musician.
ARR made a history, a new musical era like AR/BR like the Christs AC/BC
Not even any musician from India, so aggressive as ARR to cross borders. I see some like Ravishankar, Zakhir, and L.Shankar etc. But no one can come close to ARR, still lack in many aspects.
why does maniratnam always imply that it is the woman who is responsible for a crisis in all of his movies?? just becuase his marriage was not successful, it does not mean that women in general are intolerant and less rational..!
I have enormous respect for him, however, there seems to be a subtle theme in all of his movies, which make women the reason for all the trouble!!!
simply the best. Robbed my heart in the 1st go.Unfortunately my hubby isn't tamil to understand the song. Taa and bless u for posting this song for all of us to enjoy.

I disagree, ARR's national music was more of western style and lacked the patriotic feel
