The internet would be really slow if you used usb 2.0

USB 2.0 speed = 480 Mbit/s
Average home DSL = <10 Mbit/s
No using the internet over your USB connection would not be any slower than it would otherwise. Unless you are one of the lucky/insanely rich few who have a Tier 1 backbone connection at 500+ Mbit/s.
