You might want to consider putting your Great General in the same tile as others more often, rather than on his own. There were several situations during this battle where he was out in the open and vulnerable. Cities and ranged units can easily kill him unless he's stacked with another unit.
@searanox A Great General is treated as a civilian unit, so can receive only 4 damage per ranged attack, regardless of the attacker's strength; it would take a city and two ranged attackers to kill it him one turn. Besides, he was safe at all times, believe me :)
