would you be so kind as to show a demo of how you've mixed your slips? i never do understand how that whole process works.. if you wouldn't mind, i would appreciate it ever so much.
as boring as these videos are, i find myself watching one after another of your videos, ive even subscribed, id like to give throwing a try. it looks fun.
Hey Dan you said you put Slip and oxide to the piece. If you dont have any oxides left is it possible to just do it with slip and still get an effect? Okay umm when you barnish a ceramic its done before its bisk fired but you know how they use slip and a stain to barnish it. is it possible to do it with an oxide? oh and insted of barnishing it can you paint it like you just did in the video like insted of slip and oxide just slip and stain? or it wouldn't work?
when i trim, my clay gets nasty if i trim enough. theres a rough texture and i don't like it at all. is there anyway to prevent that? how do u keep it smooth when u trim?
Question, the slipa that you apply... do you do that before bisk then put a clear coat on? Or do you do that after bisk? And is your slips just clay and oxide? Sorry to bug you!! Thanks though for EVERYTHING!!! Huge fan...
Think you can give some hints on the slip/cobalt recipe? I tried doing your finger decoration technique with some iron oxide and realized that it doesn't work with iron oxide, it just smeared it.
Unless... there's more technique then moving your finger up and down quickly?
Wow amazing pot. I kept trying to make all my work perfectly round, but my instructor pointed out that you can only tell if it's spinning and not to focus on those small little imperfections. Glad to see that i'm not the only one that has that problem.
Do you make your own slip? I've wanted to know how to do this for a while?

What is the slip recipe you are using? How much cobalt ect., and would this slip work in ^10 soda/woodfire or just normal ^10 reduction

Dan, so you do any burnishing or do you find it compromises adhesion of the slip? Thanks.

Leave the clay 'till it's pretty hard and use a very sharp tool.
Sounds like your clay is a bit too soft still to trim.

dan is right, You gotta let it dry a bit more. You should hear a scraping sound when you are trimming. That's how I gauge if it's ready to trim.

Hi,yes the slip is put on before biscuit firing and is just slip and oxide.
We put clear or other glazes on and the oxide shows through to a greater or lesser extent.

Beautiful. Do you trim a foot on any of your pieces?

do you throw it and then just leave it on the bat? great pot!
limechild5 3 years ago
I throw all the pots on bats then take them off the wheel, and just turn/trim them the next day once they've dried.
Cheers,Dan

That's true, this was perfectly straight when I threw it and they always dry a bit unevenly and go a bit wonky.
But once its stopped spinning you can't tell.

I've never seen that design style done before; moving your finger over the slip while it turns. I hope we can see that when it comes out of the kiln.
Great video.
