  • Beautiful and artistic photography in the intro,,, and Kurosawa was right, this is one of the best and I'd say most underrated American films ever.

  • This music brings back memories of a time when life was easier. Somehow more magical. No more magic in life any more.

  • the most moving scifi film i have even seen.....quite beautiful in it`s message of conservation.

  • one of the best film I've ever seen!! The first time I saw it I was 12 and it touched deeply my soul. Idon't kow why, maybe for Joan Baez's stunnig songs, maybe for the droids... the fact is that it drives me to tears when it ends... (forgive my bad english)

  • I think the movie tries to claim for the authentic in life, no matter the forest, human warmth or any other heart-touching goal.

  • I just hope the sequel is'nt like Hawaii 50's next filler series.

  • Never heard of this film until I watched a Boards of Canada tune layed over some footage. Not too keen on watching it if it's one of those "we're all doomed" Neo-Malthusianism preach at you until you shoot yourself for everyone elses benefit type of things but I might have a look.

  • I love this movie.......a wake up call for almost everyone who will listen

  • I remember watching this movie when it aired on TV for the first time and I was about 10. I liked it so much that when I got a Netflix account I watched it on my computer. Though it was an ususal roll for Bruce Dern to play since he played the bad guy in most of his movies, He did an outstanding job in this movie.

  • The most beautiful musical intro to any movie I have ever seen....tears are falling

  • I love this movie... and the opening song is so pleasant and soothing to the heart and ears

  • the ideal is silent-running backwards.

preserve Gaia, and blast all members of a certain arrogant rapidly multiplying species out into space

  • @walter0bz There is no "Gaia" -- only rock, soil, air, water and sunlight. However, if you propose blasting "all members of a certain arrogant rapidly multiplying species out into space", the rest of us won't mind if you're the first to volunteer.

  • @upajos -

the biosphere has emergant mechanisms that regulate the atmosphere. rock, soil, air, water are all actively modified by life. especially Air. no life = no oxygen. but rocks too (e.g. there are mineral formations comprised entirely of millions of years of plankton shells accumulating)

"gaia" has been locking carbon away (limestone & fossil fuels) to combat the natural warming of the sun (+30%/4bn yrs)

life started when the temp was just right, & since it evolved climate-control

  • @upajos There is the 'planet' that is 'alive' and gives us warmth and shelter and food. Were it not for the earth 'we' would NOT be here. Think before you speak. Learn before you talk. Open your eyes and SEE what we see......

  • @MrLatinmuscl I don't need any lectures from tree-huggers who flunked out of high-school science classes, or avoided taking the classes altogether. As an engineer, I work with something called control system theory. Feedback control systems can do remarkable things, yet they are not alive. The Earth is a large feedback control system, powered by the Sun. Yes, MrLatinmuscl, LEARN before you talk.

  • @upajos LOL you JUST made my 'point', you don't THINK, you DONT do anything but rely on your ( so called) brains and Im NOT going to go degree to degree with you altho I think my nomination for the nobel prize one year TRUMPS anything YOU got. I have MORE education behind me than that HUGE you know what YOU have. Apparently you just SIT on YOUR brains. It's useless 'attempting' to intelligently 'discuss' something of THIS magnitude with someone who does NOT understand and you sir DONT.

  • @MrLatinmuscl Nobel Prize? So what? Barack Obama got a Nobel Prize for ... doing nothing. Al Gore got an Oscar for his movie "An Inconvenient Truth", which has been shown to be rife with errors and outright falsifications. I wouldn't be so quick to brag; it could be detrimental to one's job prospects. Now, with all your degrees (or in spite of them), tell us what you know about feedback control theory.

  • @upajos LOL uh I don't do as I said degree to degree much less discuss something I've NOT looked into, much less have an interest in. I leave that to the 'grunts' like you and by the way I have a 'great' job.

  • Global warming is a hoax foisted on the AMerican people so that a few can benefit financially. Wonder how Al Gore feels now that Osama agrees with him?

  • a most beautiful intro to any movie I have seen...

  • I agree. Very well made.

  • Earth is warming up. There is incontrivertible evidence to suggest so. Yes, it's part of the natural cycle. But we humans have speeded that cycle up a thousand times faster than it would naturally go. We can stop this if we want. Sadly, I think the oil companies and multi national corporations are too greedy to save the planet... And it will be the rest of us poor sods (and the beautiful planet we inhabit) that will suffer for it.

  • There's nothing we can do to either destroy or SAVE the planet. How arrogant we are to think we can do anything to change anything on earth. Use your air conditioner, drive your SUV, use your hair spray, and don't give in to the crap that says we're changing the climate. The climate changes all by itself, and has for bazillions of years. There's climate change on Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and all the rest, yet we're not there to make it happen. A little common sense goes a long way.

  • you know what, it's brainwashed noncaring idiot sheeple like MrTommy001 that will make this world a colder barron place. Corporations make crap we don't need so they can get rich & fat while crushing forests, dumping chemicals in rivers, and dumping trash in the sea and your telling people to buy more? We may not be destroying the Earth but we damn sure are destroy the balance that keeps us all alive.

  • I agree with you utubelurkr but you may have misunderstood MrTommy001. I think his point was that many things are out of our control. Unfortunately there is a lack of common sense in this world. Peace to all.

  • @MrTommy001 Yeah there is. Example nukes.

Try doing a bit of research before denying everything that so many professionally skilled scientists have said.

  • Co-written by Mike Cimino?? The Deer Hunter Michael Cimino??

  • @Viperkal Your post is old and you might not still be listening, but yes, the Deer Hunter Michael Cimino, along with the Deer Hunter Deric Washburn and the NYPD Blue Steven Bochco.

  • @racookster Thank you! I find that very interesting.

  • Wolfgang Vock

  • For years it was my all-time favorite film, and probably still in the top three, maybe behind the first two Godfather movies. It's a tear-jerker for sure, especially at the end with Dewey and his dented little pale watering the flowers.

  • I think a remake of this movie with christian bale would be cool. Would be hard to make a better version - but would get a whole of people watching it.

  • Cristian Bale could never be Lowell.

  • kurosawa and Ozu said that this was the best American film ever made. Not faint praise!

  • great film and song.......

  • NOTE-In 6 feet under the hero asks what the robots represented. they were just supposed to be walking refrig's, NOT TV's. The hero read to much into them. But later lowel is lonely and he turns them into companions.

  • @ghostmanlostsoul Six feet under, only just finished watching it and still reeling from it , raised the bar and just kept going. I felt very aligned with Arthur and Silent Running, ...which is a little disturbing.

The entire human population would not even fill a square kilometer on the face of the earth so it is hard to imagine we can really have a devastating impact on the planet. Who really knows for sure.

  • @rodc2006 Hi Rod i'm not being arrogant but sincere when i say we can know the future if we will trust that the holy bible is the word of the one true God. Bible prophecy has proven it's predictions are 100% accurate and the statistics of the chance of them being fullfilled are mind boggling. All intelligent bible scholars believe we're in what the bible tells us is the very end times for this world. God has told all of us, not just Christians, some very specific events that will happen at the.

  • @rodc2006 ..end of the world. If it interests you, you could easily research it online. God bless.

  • I love this movie and the music. I showed it to my wife and we got a kick out of it being mentioned on the HBO show "Six Feet Under". But in reality, it's eco terrorism propaganda. We do not have the ability to wreck the planet. It corrects itself and will be here long after we are gone. On a scifi note: those ships were used in the original and updated versions of Battlestar Galactica.

  • Yes, the Earth will outlast us, but we do have the ability to destroy it's/our atmosphere, and we're doing that quite well. As Carl Sagan said, it is like a fine coat of varnish that sustains our life.

  • WRONG. We don't have the ability to destroy it. It's way bigger and regenerative than we think. Don't buy into this carbon bullshit. It's all part of the cycle.

  • NO it is not carbon bullshit, it's us spewing garbage into the atmosphere and destroying acre after acre of forest that feeds it. It is already damaged and will worsen as long as we're here. Our population continues to increase to the point of plundering the Earth's resources. If anything, Dave, we're altering the natural cycle.

  • We are part of the natural cycle. To suggest we are not and talk about our increasing population puts you in the same group as these mad liberal scientists that talk about "controlling" the population to save the planet. Code word for large scale extermination. I don't hear you complaining about volcano's spewing into the atmosphere. The Earth was put here for us to have dominion over. As the population increases, so does technology. Where's the global warming? BULLSHIT...

  • Dave, you need to stop letting Rush Limbaugh think for you. Today's scientists merely state the results of their research. We can't do anything about volcanoes now, but we can do a whole lot better in preserving our globe. Global warming is clearly occuring now, as ice is disappearing. Glacier National Park will have no glaciers in about 20 years! But the idea that the Earth was "put" here for us to just consume resembles the primitive flat earth way of thinking.

  • I think for myself. We have only lived in a sliver of time and there is evidence of warming without the CO2 levels. We're having record cool temps and I'm not sweating my ass off as usual. It's all a cycle. The sun is also going through a cycle as it's sunspot cycle is all messed up. Wake up a realize this is a taxation scheme. Why would are reps in DC vote on a bill that wasn't even fully written never mind read. The "scientists" that believe in this warming crap is a small minority.

  • "Civilizations don't last very long but destroy themselves." Stephen Hawking

We're all born to die but let's respect each other and our planet.

  • It's so beautiful.. I didn't know the movie, but when I incidently saw this intro on TV, I just had to view it.

  • I love this sequence without Joan's singing thanks for posting
