Hi.. thanks to your video. Its very helpful. I will be taking the academic IELTs soon. im wondering if u have some videos about the writing task 1 which is graph interpretations... thanks. God bless
Yes these arguments are great, I can do even better, BUT I need more time to do it.. I wouldn't be able to drew such conclusions in 1 minute.. I need 30 minutes to write a plan at least.. and then I can write.. 40min. would enough on top of 30..
I SIMPLY CAN'T DREW FALSE CONCLUSIONS BECAUSE i WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN IT LOGICALLY.. MY THOUGHTS ARE VERY DEEP!!!!!!

Sir, as I mentioned in another comment mailed to you, I recently attended IELTS exam on Saturday 30th July..I am grateful to your essays which gave me an insight into the way essays are written..Your videos lectures were just too good covering all aspects of a good essay , all one needs to do is follow your instructions and practice writing few essays, with which they can confidently write essays. hey i got a question... why a grade from speaking in the IELTS can variate from 7.5 the first time that you took it, and after 6 months living in the UK having a 5.5?
PLZ... tell me what should i do to get 7 all, its very hard to get 7 in writing i had 8.5 in listening and speaking and reading 7 but i dont understand i wrote all the essays in brief but still only managed to get 5.5 its not only with me but many had the same issue.
we have been told that we should put concession paragraph before the conclusion, except for the situation that needs a solution. Are we really going to put the concession statement though it sounds against to our stand?
I have been told by my teacher that we can also mention about negative or say other views too. like what can be disadvantages if education is not free or what can be the advantages of not-free education. because all aspects should be discussed before reaching final decision
here only advantages of education have been talked about
@TheRagini777 your pertaining about concession paragraph right? actually we've been told with that also, and im not sure if it implies good result since we are presenting point of view against our stand.
I have told by my teacher that we can also mention about negative or say other views too. like what can be disadvantages if education is not free or what can be the advantages of not-free education. because all aspects should be discussed before reaching final decision
Hi, can you tell me if i make any spelling mistake in any part of the main 4 topics that i will not get mark for that specific question, im sure in writing this matters alot but in reading, or listening if this apply or not. Thank you in advance.
I like what Clint Eastwood said, in Dirty Harry. "A man's gotta know his limitations." If you don't feel ready for the test, save your money, do more preparation, and then do the test - and pass!
This video is very informative and it tackles basic of writing an essay. For me the hardest part of writing an essay is the introduction, do you have some suggestion or format on writing the introduction? Could you give some usual format? Thanks.
The most important thing is to RESPOND to the question prompt/s, and make your Position or the Issue clear from the start, then PREVIEW what's to come next. Very difficult to provide a simple quick fix for an introduction. It depends on the essay question, and that's why the ebook available from the website deals with the 3 key TYPES of essay questions.
Yes. The essay demonstrated here has less words than the required 250 words, but the aim of this demo is to show how to plan and write an essay, within the 10 minutes of a youtube vidcast. More time - more words!
Short answer - it depends on the question!! Some essay prompts require the writer to argue one position, others require the writer to discuss (for and against) a position, others (commonly) require the writer to answer two or possibly three questions (one of which might be giving your opinion). So, just make sure you answer the question/s!!
It depends on whether the mispelling changed the meaning of the word, and how many other spelling mistakes you made. Try to spell correctly key words, and often the question shows the correctly spelt form of such words. If spelling is a difficulty for you, as it is for some people, you might need to review some spelling rules, and do some homework to improve your spelling! (Sorry, no magic here!)
I misspelt 'professor' and used it three times, maybe, with the same meaning. As far as I know, I misspelt only one more word 'diligent' and they were not the key words, so it shouldn't be fatal...
I leant how really important spelling is. From now on, I will make sure I don't leave any words I'm not sure how to spell.
My opinion is that our school should open up art classes. One good reason is that art classes can give students an opportunity to express their feelings and their creativity with just dr
hi i need ur help... i have written IELts twice got 8 and 8 over all both the times but couldnt get the desired 7 in writing... both the time i got only 6.5 in spite of working towards... can any one pls help me with this prob... feeling so dishearten .. Coming sept 5 i'm retaking the test...
Man your lucky you got 8, I haven't done it yet. And I think it's really hard, that even I want be getting 4. I really need some preperations, help me out here.
Listening does not always help to write a essay. What really helps you is learning essays from some one else more experienced in writing. Learning helps not necessarily copying, but just reading because you learn faster in how a essay should be writed.
Just got my result yesterday. Got 7 for writing, my lowest score at IELTS. Overall I got 8.5 with two 9s in listening and speaking! Voxguru is good! This particular video was very very helpful.
Did my exam today. Guess what topic came up in the essay writing...-"should university education be free?" Could I be more lucky? Thanks for helping out, voxguru!
were we on the same exam? I did last Saturday, same question... I didn't sleep well the previous night and my head was blurry when I did the exam ... it was my worst part of IELTS in my opinion... though "releasing social tension and create harmony" popped out in my head straight away and I wondered where it came from! This video! Wish I could remember things more clearly!
I had mine in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I guess its the same questions all around the world then. Could be useful if I posted a topic for writing test here before you went for exam - we are like 3 hours ahead of your country right?)))
Let me know what your result is when you find out on 11 July... now i am real curious))
To bad about the sound there, mate. But the context is great! Thx. Doing my speaking test tomorrow, and the rest on saturday. My gut relly is upside down...
You did good! Congrats! I achieved my goals, got an overall score of 8. Got 7 in writing, my lowest score, in spite of the voxguru...;-) So that was that! Have a good one gingernes!
and you!)) Strange you got 7 too, I thought you would score higher than me. But still a good result isn't it? I think its really hard to get higher than that, the essay should be ideal, and its so hard to manage that in 40 minutes. In my view, if they gave people more time, and computers instead of paper (no spellcheck of course) everyone would do so much better at writing. I think the system of this exam is outdated. But anyways. Good luck!
Minimum word limit is 240 words. But, don't just pump out the right number of words. As this video shows: 1. Read the question (analyse it), 2. Make a plan (it will help you stay focused on the answer/task), 3. Make your POSITION/preview clear, and 4. Write each argument/explanation in paragraphs.
i find the ideas on the topic good but i think there is a problem with the essay in it's whole. what i know about argumentative essays is that, you have a choose a position; for or against, agree or disagree for example, but when writing the essay you have to consider both positions but ofcourse supporting your's more. this essay just focus on points that he agrees but says nothing about the possible negative effects of free education. am i wrong here?
The answer provided to the essay question in this video is satisfactory. IN YOUR IELTS EXAM REMEMBER to READ the QUESTION/S carefully. IELTS essay questions are different in each exam. Sometimes you may have to give your opinion on an issue. Sometimes you may have to discuss both sides of an issue. Or you may be asked to discuss two sides of an issue, and THEN give your opinion. Be advised, you must answer the question/s fully, and give clear and relevant explanation of your ideas.
Thanks for your question. It is important in the IELTS to have clear paragraphs, and because it is a short essay of around 240 words, you don't need to write a long introductory paragraph. I would advise against it. It is important to develop your arguments in the body paragraphs of your essay, but the introduction only needs to briefly state your response to the question/prompt and preview what you're going to say in the body of your essay.
Yes. Of course. You can partially agree, or you may qualify the extent to which you agree with some proposition. However, in an exam, sometimes it's easier, faster and more efficient to take a clear position. BE CAREFUL! You must answer the question - or all parts of the question, or questions!!
Hi Gloria, Do you mean that if you don't have enough words to express your ideas clearly, can you get a high score in the exam? Well, the short answer is 'no', but I understood your message, so you are well on your way! Keep going my dear, and don't give up!! As Paul Kelly says, "From little things, big things grow."
I admire your job Esteemed Guru.. I wanna ask you one Question that when i had the IELTS class in my city the madam told me that never to copy the words that are used for the topic by examiner may i know whether we can copy those words or not?
Thanks for your question. Madam was probably right. You should not copy a lot of text that is given in the question. However, you must identify the topic clearly and respond to the question. For example: "Product piracy should be banned." Discuss. IN YOUR RESPONSE, you are certainly free to state that perhaps you agree: Product piracy, in my view, should be banned. The most important thing is to clearly answer the question.
that was very useful for preparing for a test such as the IELTS I think. The sound quality was terrible though. Maybe you can cover the microphone with a cloth or something.
Dear Sir. What us to do in this case: Whoever controls the media also controls opinions and attitudes of the people and there is little that can be done to rectify this. There are obviously two statements. And question: to what extent do you agree or disagree? So, i'm might be agree to the first part and disagree to the latter part of the statement. how to plan in this case?
Right. So, you're Position could be: In my view, whoever controls the media also controls (or at least can profoundly shape) public opinion. However, I believe that much can be done to rectify this situation (such as democratising the media). THEN, you'd go on in separate paragraphs to fully develop your answers (positions) presented in your introduction. Thanks for your question - good one! AND, check out the e-book on essay writing at the website!
Here's a few ideas: Get a good Grammar Exercise book; find a good English teacher; copy some simple English texts.. AND, don't do the test until you're ready. Prepare and practice. Don't underestimate the difficulty of the Writing section, esp. the essay!!
Short answer: No. But, best to write more or less 250 words for the essay, and (I think) it's 160, or thereabouts for the Report. Part of the challenge is planning your answer to meet the word requirements.
Thanks sir,it's a great help! I am scheduled to take my IELTS exam this coming september 18here in Manila. This is my 2nd time taking the IELTS although I passed the previous one, it just expired unfortunately.
Thanks for your help via Video " ESSAY 1"...i have been learning a lot from this one...and i hope that my IELTS writing score would be good as my expectation. Thank you!
Nice Video...Simple, but effective. I like how you focus on only one or two goals per video. Many teachers try to do 100 things and people learn nothing.
A lot depends on the question. Your position statement is your opinion, and does not need to be stated "In my opinion" because that's understood. BUT, be careful. Some questions only require discussion or explanation, and do not require you to give your opinion. You'd be marked down if your opinion was not required and you gave it. Topic 3 of the e-book, I think, deals with interpreting different types of essay questions.

With regards from
LETSKNOW...

Thank you very much indeed... You are really useful teacher... wish you were in our city..

that was very useful for preparing for a test such as the IELTS I think.

1234ELDAR 3 years ago

How can i train to construct a sentence with correct grammar? I'm fear about it, i don't know how for my IELTS.
dunsen1975 3 years ago
Here's a few ideas: Get a good Grammar Exercise book; find a good English teacher; copy some simple English texts.. AND, don't do the test until you're ready. Prepare and practice. Don't underestimate the difficulty of the Writing section, esp. the essay!!

About the IELTS writing test, are we penalised if we write more than the needed words? Both task 1 and 2?
dainlergnars31 3 years ago

Many teachers try to do 100 things and people learn nothing.

thanks for your relation but I think starting with 'in my opinion' not a good technique for ielts essay..it is appropiate in conclusion part
evrimcinar 3 years ago
A lot depends on the question. Your position statement is your opinion, and does not need to be stated "In my opinion" because that's understood. BUT, be careful. Some questions only require discussion or explanation, and do not require you to give your opinion. You'd be marked down if your opinion was not required and you gave it. Topic 3 of the e-book, I think, deals with interpreting different types of essay questions.
