Same goes with uncle, if he's younger than your mom or dad, you call him 'na bao'... if older than you call him 'loong'. Fish and aunt does NOT sound the same...

Lao languages has several different accents.For all of you who are used to Thai and don't know.Lao came first.Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai area in Thailand are Lao speaking.So is northeastern Thailand.However the Thai King hated Lao and coined the term Isaan to separate northeastern Lao speaking Thailand from Lao but it didn't work.Isaan and Chiang Mai ppl both speak Lao dialect but Thais claim Lao and not Isaan.Why is that??Because Isaan is poor and Chiang is not.Thai thick faced.

@thue1 Lao and Thai both came from southern China and spoke the same language when we broke off from China we developed our own dialects and accents.Both Lao and Thai are mutually intelligible meaning we can understand each other for the most part.
