  • the singer is gd...but the direction not as define as Labrie..I dunno man..I am so glad Labrie is in DT...if not I prolly never listen to em

  • The intro to this is the most 80s version of Metropolis you'll ever hear xD

  • @UnholyMessiah555 It's like an 80's movie where Tom Cruise come's riding on a motorbike :D

  • Sounds like a cross between LaBrie and Domici but closer to LaBrie if he enunciated more. Not bad though.

  • This is actually really good, but not exactly a prog-metal voice.

  • SCREAM FOR ME LONG BEACH!

  • The intro sounding like an 80's fight scene put me off straight away.

  • thank god james got the spot in the band, stone is TERRIBLE

  • Actually it's not bad.

  • I prefer Fabio-oops I ment Labrie

  • RUIM DEMAIS PQP!!!

  • Holy crap, that's awful.

  • @fabioadias

No it´s just different and in very old demo quality. It´s your idiotic comment that´s awful.

  • Even though I don't, entirely, like LaBrie's singing... Noone else would've fit.

Maybe I say that cause I'm used to listening to his awkward voice... Anyways.. Noone sounds as awkward as LaBrie did lol...

Bah.. What difference does it make? Portnoy dropped out... And I have no info on who would replace him, beeing noone should. Portnoy is Portnoy.

  • This makes me realize, how much character LaBrie gave to Dream Theater. If they went along with Dominici, or some other generic mid-to-late 80's metal singer, the band probably wouldn't have caught my attention. What made it unique was the fact that LaBrie didn't sound just like everyone else.

  • I love this! I'm going to put all these auditions on a CD.

  • the opening sounds almost like Queen Of The Reich

  • Steve stone, reminds me alot of Robert Plant.

  • It says they hired him, but then fired him shortly thereafter for not cutting it in concert.

  • @alcoyot The story was that Charlie Dominici had very poor stage presence, so they gave Steve Stone a tape of some Iron Maiden shows to get some context. but he ended up just doing a bad Bruce Dickinson impression.

He also blew out his vocal cords after that E5 at the beginning!

  • I really think Ray Gillen would have been amazing with Dream Theater

  • hes a good singer but dream theater wasnt right for him i think. he sounds a lot like geoff tate in high notes

  • Interesting to hear another singer on it. But I prefer Labrie.

  • He sounds to be the next vocalist for 38 Special. No disrespect to that band but not good enough for this band.

  • SCREAM FOR ME, LONG BEACH.

  • @SonOfYoungwood

    hahaha i get it

  • TWO MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT!

  • seems like one of the singers of Malmsteen's and a bit of slaughter singer also

  • thank god they didn't go with guy...

  • amen to that mister..! it appears 90's lack of vocalists or so : S

  • this guy could come back as a replacement possibly if he still sounds like this...but i doubt it......Labrie was much better hands down in the original

  • I don't think I'd consider listening to Dream Theater had this guy gotten accepted. It seriously gives me a headache.

  • Oh man, this is bad. No offense. The phrasing is really bad. He's slurring every phrase. James LaBrie is THE singer for DT.

  • Would i of liked DT as much if it werent for Labrie? I dont think i would. For me, no matter how good the music is, if the singer sucks it makes it unlistenable. Labrie is a fucking powerhouse of a singer, ok not as strong live these days but in the studio hes still rock solid as you'd expected. Labrie is the only voice for DT if you ask me, if he left, they would be done in my eyes. hes irreplacable.

  • His voice is too soft for DT, IMO.

    Not bad though

  • paul dianno singing in dt, ahah.

  • this guy is not bad at all...

  • the bit at 3:20 is just poor compared to the mighty labrie

  • I like what he did at 3:09-3:14. A lot of the harmonies in here were pretty cool (Especially 3:47-3:51), but at the same time, a lot of his singing was...well, imperfect. He's not a bad singer by any means; he's just not right for DT

  • This guy had a website up for a longtime with this song for streaming though he had some weird spoken part at the beginning (much like Spinal Tap). He had a band that he was going to be releasing a CD with but it was delayed and the website went offline years ago. I would be curious as to what it sounds like.

  • this guy would've lasted five minutes in dream theater. his timing sucks

  • how i can sing like the acute voice of james labrie??

  • Maybe Myung should sing......

  • @josep1090 maybe myung should talk first ( lol j/k )

  • no es Myun,es el primer vocalista de Dream..

  • I think DT with this singer would have never been sth more than Threshold, Lemur's voice, Vanden Plas or Mayadome, in prog metal status.

  • How can any of you say this is good? He has to breath out most of the words because he cant hit the pitch with proper vocal techs. Also, he canhardly pronounce any of the damn words. Its simply terrible. James fits the band better than anyone else could. This dude....I would probly not be able to listen to DT nearly as religiously as I do now if it were him on vocals.

  • @hellrazor777 It would have been even worse if he tried to sing anything off BCASL. James' voice is amazing on that album and this guy can't even match him on his weakest album imo.

  • James Labrie is perfec for Dream Theater,i can't imagine thinks like 6DOIT or Octavarium with this voice,it's good but i say again,Labrie is Perfect...

  • He sounds like charlie Dominici XD

  • What?! Are you crazy?! lol

  • Just a Tad lol

  • his voice is ok, but its just....kinda weak

  • This guy has a good voice, but he can't sing.

  • if YOU are any kind of a DT fan, you should know it's on the Live In Tokyo disc where he's trying on some clothes....

  • Apparently DT auditioned one guy where after the first line of lyrics John Myung almost had to put down his bass he was laughing so hard.

  • hmm your thinking of when they play damage inc w/Barney Greenway. that was not an audition that was just a one-off thing

  • Whoa, whoa, whoa...John Myung can laugh? lol Dude hardly ever talks, I'd be interested to hear/see him laugh.

  • you can watch him give a large smile in his instructional vid, if you wish to watch a rare event in history

  • This guy is a Phil Collins wannabe, and I can honestly sing this song better than he can. Hard for me to believe that they were actually going to commit to this Douchebag. Thank God they had sense. James LaBrie top 100 greatest vocals of the last millenium.

  • Labrie is the best vocal for DT...He wins for K.O!

  • Labrie wins.

  • labrie wins by knockout

  • yeah a first round knockout.

  • yup labrie pwns

  • 2nd that 1

  • I dunno, John Arch gave LaBrie quite a run for his money. This guy on the other hand, sounds like a lounge singer trying to imitate Tony Martin.

  • yeah where did you get all of these, bootleg or something?

  • Well then, where was HE during "When Dream and day Reunite?" lol

  • Steve was there for his ONE show with them in 91'....from what I understand; the guy did pretty decent in his auditions ((as you can hear in this vid, and his rendition of "To Live Forever")) but, at the one and ONLY preformance he ever did with them, he fucked up ALOT....REALLY bad, and then acted like a complete douche bag to the band after the show, so...they canned his ass

  • yea i laughed when i read that part of lifting shadows about the show

  • not after the show, after like 4 songs, they played the rest without vocals

  • Joder, James Labrie se come a este muchacho con patatas fritas. Y la version del disco es increiblemente mejor. este tio es un poco flipao con tanto coro y tanto gritito

  • He sounds like a blend of Geoff Tate and Steve Perry - but I'm GLAD they Labrie, he's the best for Dream Theater, no matter what haters may say

  • LaBrie blows this guy away. It's strange how much better he is than this guy.

  • Where did you get these...?

    Awesome nonetheless.

  • The voice is near of Steve Perry (journey Singer) voice, kinda diferent, but i like!

  • I LOVED that high note at the beginning!!!! I recently found out my Aunt dated this guy back when he was auditioning and doin his DT thing...even durring his ONE show with them HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • LOL That's hilarious - small world, eh?

I'd be curious to know where the guy is from originally. He sings with an accent, but I couldn't quite place it - some words sounded Swedish-accented, others Italian, and at the end of the song I could swear it was Spanish. Any idea? "Steve Stone" isn't his real name, that's for sure!
