This makes me realize, how much character LaBrie gave to Dream Theater. If they went along with Dominici, or some other generic mid-to-late 80's metal singer, the band probably wouldn't have caught my attention. What made it unique was the fact that LaBrie didn't sound just like everyone else.
@alcoyot The story was that Charlie Dominici had very poor stage presence, so they gave Steve Stone a tape of some Iron Maiden shows to get some context. but he ended up just doing a bad Bruce Dickinson impression.
He also blew out his vocal cords after that E5 at the beginning!
this guy could come back as a replacement possibly if he still sounds like this...but i doubt it......Labrie was much better hands down in the original
Would i of liked DT as much if it werent for Labrie? I dont think i would. For me, no matter how good the music is, if the singer sucks it makes it unlistenable. Labrie is a fucking powerhouse of a singer, ok not as strong live these days but in the studio hes still rock solid as you'd expected. Labrie is the only voice for DT if you ask me, if he left, they would be done in my eyes. hes irreplacable.
I like what he did at 3:09-3:14. A lot of the harmonies in here were pretty cool (Especially 3:47-3:51), but at the same time, a lot of his singing was...well, imperfect. He's not a bad singer by any means; he's just not right for DT
This guy had a website up for a longtime with this song for streaming though he had some weird spoken part at the beginning (much like Spinal Tap). He had a band that he was going to be releasing a CD with but it was delayed and the website went offline years ago. I would be curious as to what it sounds like.
How can any of you say this is good? He has to breath out most of the words because he cant hit the pitch with proper vocal techs. Also, he canhardly pronounce any of the damn words. Its simply terrible. James fits the band better than anyone else could. This dude....I would probly not be able to listen to DT nearly as religiously as I do now if it were him on vocals.
@hellrazor777 It would have been even worse if he tried to sing anything off BCASL. James' voice is amazing on that album and this guy can't even match him on his weakest album imo.
James Labrie is perfec for Dream Theater,i can't imagine thinks like 6DOIT or Octavarium with this voice,it's good but i say again,Labrie is Perfect...

if any of you call yourself DT fans, you should know that Myung talks in the 5 yrs in a lifetime vid when they are in Japan and hes trying on some clothes...i forget what he said though.
This guy is a Phil Collins wannabe, and I can honestly sing this song better than he can. Hard for me to believe that they were actually going to commit to this Douchebag. Thank God they had sense. James LaBrie top 100 greatest vocals of the last millenium.
Steve was there for his ONE show with them in 91'....from what I understand; the guy did pretty decent in his auditions ((as you can hear in this vid, and his rendition of "To Live Forever")) but, at the one and ONLY preformance he ever did with them, he fucked up ALOT....REALLY bad, and then acted like a complete douche bag to the band after the show, so...they canned his ass
Joder, James Labrie se come a este muchacho con patatas fritas. Y la version del disco es increiblemente mejor. este tio es un poco flipao con tanto coro y tanto gritito

I'd be curious to know where the guy is from originally. He sings with an accent, but I couldn't quite place it - some words sounded Swedish-accented, others Italian, and at the end of the song I could swear it was Spanish. Any idea? "Steve Stone" isn't his real name, that's for sure!
the singer is gd...but the direction not as define as Labrie..I dunno man..I am so glad Labrie is in DT...if not I prolly never listen to em

The intro to this is the most 80s version of Metropolis you'll ever hear xD
UnholyMessiah555 5 months ago
@UnholyMessiah555 It's like an 80's movie where Tom Cruise come's riding on a motorbike :D

Sounds like a cross between LaBrie and Domici but closer to LaBrie if he enunciated more. Not bad though.

This is actually really good, but not exactly a prog-metal voice.

Even though I don't, entirely, like LaBrie's singing... Noone else would've fit.
Maybe I say that cause I'm used to listening to his awkward voice... Anyways.. Noone sounds as awkward as LaBrie did lol...
Bah.. What difference does it make? Portnoy dropped out... And I have no info on who would replace him, beeing noone should. Portnoy is Portnoy.
