Please someone tell me, why on earth would an English teacher assign a movie created by a morally vacuous, post-modernist, anti-bourgeious group of hollywood writers when there are hundreds of classical texts out there? Someone needs to fire these teachers. Oh wait, I forgot. The unions make that very difficult. I mean, the worst they do to pederastic and abusive teachers is move them to "rubber rooms," where they receive all the lavish benefits they would normally receive. How sad.
@tigerhop I agree that the texts we study in school are SCUM compared to what we could and should be studying but I don't think the teachers are completely to blame - They are given a list of texts to choose from (this one definitely could have chosen better) but ultimately it's the Board of Studies' fault for coming up with such a rubbish list. The English teacher I had was excellent but what a waste of a brilliant mind for him to be teaching things like American Beauty! THAT is sad.
A Handmaid's Tale is a great work of science fiction, but it seems your socialist English teacher is trying to tie this militaristic, insane theocracy to right-wing conservatives in this country. Actually, if you actually took the time to read Thomas Paine, John Locke, and the founding fathers, you'd find that ALL of them would be considered right-wing extremists according to today's secular liberal Lords of the culture. It's hilarious that you take any of the garbage coming out of Hollywood seriously-a place where pedophiles run rampant, human nature is at it's worst as casting couch virgins are turned into products to be used and disposed of by those in power, and there are more divorces than anywhere else. You've been spoon fed pure lies by your teacher. American Beauty lambasted the wholesome values most people in this country hold dear by painting suburbia as an immorally vacuous, suppressive place.

just coz I did an assignement on texts we were studying in class doesn't mean I liked them.
We didn't watch The Handmaid's Tale. We read the book. Which was "well written" but utter garbage. If our teachers are spoon-feeding us lies its because they are only doing with us what was done with them when they were at university.
