  • Very under-rated, maybe more people will find him after watching the new Lynx ad, which features this song. My personal favourite is 'Two Different Roads' although I also love 'Elusive Ragings' and 'Dance between the Raindrops' off The Prison album.

  • I love "Some of Shelly's Blues. Check it out.

  • If I remember correctly, John Boylan pulled this Texas swing tune from oblivion to make it the hit it was. Being a songwriter, it's truly cool to hear a rough artist demo/idea, but some of those jerk/Hollywood types made those ideas palletable, or they'd never have been heard. And yes, I hate most (shootin' in the dark) producers, as most haven't a clue, but a few do.

  • I love this song ! Mike was always my fav ! Still is ;)

Thanks for the awesome video !!

  • I orginally got this on an old paper thin LP and was able to convert it from LP to Cd, as well as a couple more my two other favorites. If there is some way to eventually and them to my channel that links my site to yours, let me know. Presently I have a major malfuntion with my freemake video converter, windows 7, and norton security. I do not and never will take credit for any videos, all I want is to spread the joy and turn some people on to these tunes. Thank you for posting this video.

  • @controversyking Linda Ronstadt did a splendid job with her version; two wonderful songs ... can't be beat!

  • I STILL THINK MICKEY HAD ALL THE CHOPS!

    CK. OUT "GOIN DOWN"

  • mike. please, lets fuck already

  • @TheMonkeesArchive Yep, I hear ya.

  • I knew this guy was talented beyond the Monkeys, what happened to him? Just can't belive he didn't become a huge star .

  • what are they all dead?? hell don't seem that old it was the 60's n 70's right?

  • Mike Nesmith....the serious one. I was watching the Monkees when the TV show first came out back in the 60's and I remember him standing apart from the other lads...just his mannerism etc. He always was a favorite of mine. Its great to discover he did have a sound of his own...but I ought to have realized that! Thanks for this great montage.

  • I love his voice, but Linda Ronstadt's version is better.

  • very good ashley

  • Sunset Sam, baby!

  • i think Mr. Johnny Cash likes this song..

  • @hayesman76 Michael's mom didn't help invent liquid paper till after Mike started with the Monkees, so he wasn't actually from a rich family. His mom became rich...He and Kirshner were in each other's faces because he wanted to write and play his own music. He was a real musician (when he auditioned, he came with his guitar ready) and wanted just to play music. And Kirshner didn't really allow that..

  • @LennonRevolution9 not true.she invented it in the early fifties and was marketing it herself by the late fifties.and she didn't 'help' invent it,she pretty much developed it by herself.she sold the company in the late sixties to gillette for fifty mil.mike got it all when she died.mike was at the forefront of music video in the seventies and for better or worse, there would be no mtv without him.he currently owns pacific arts corporation and video ranch.don't feel sorry for him.

  • @dobbsiancant i don't feel sorry for him...i apologize for getting the years wrong. my bad. And i knew that Mike was basically the reason why we have music videos today...and i'm right in saying that he was always basically at odds with the Monkees producers because they didn't allow him to write and play his own music...and i also know that he wasn't rich when he tried out for the Monkees...

  • It was interesting to learn, via a Monkees documentary, that Mike Nesmith, in particular among the members of the group, was at serious loggerheads with Don Kirshner, the producer of the tv series. Perhaps the fact that Nesmith was from a wealthy family (his mother invented "Liquid Paper" correction fluid, whose coffers I definitely helped fill during my pre-PC college days!) and the possibility of getting fired wasn't so bad for him. He really wrote a GREAT song with "Different Drum"!

  • Mike Nesmith's mum invented liquid paper.

  • TUSVM for this!!! One of my alltime fav songs by anyone ever!!!!! Extremely thankful that you & YouTube exist allow people like us - with AWESOME taste!!! ;-) to share, find and enjoy our old gems again... Do not even think that God knows what happened to all my meticulously collected and treasured albums from the time... and, wouldn't have anything to play them on currently, either.

  • @steveoshea50 actually, although Angel Band is a fantastic and beautiful song, the lyrics go TOTALLY against Nesmith's actual beliefs as a Christian Scientist, which is like a cult thing.

  • Well, the great "Change and Hope" thing has not worked out as planned, so let's get back to Common Sense.

    Thanks Mike.

  • Not only is he a geat singer/songwriter, but I love his sense of humor. He had so many great one-liners on The Monkees, and is just incredibly funny.

  • Nez is known as a country rock/video pioneer. However, he is never mentioned as a founder of Christian Rock re: his version of Angel Band. Although left off from 1969's The Monkees Present it still should be acknowledged as the beginning of a genre.

  • My two favorite monkees is Mike and Micky I just absolutely love both!

  • Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were the 2 musicians in the Monkees,, Peter was asked to join Crosby , Stills Nash and Young,, Davy Jones was more of a stage actor and Micky Dolenz was more into film,, in fact I heard that Micky Dolenz had to learn to play the drums before the Monkees TV show could be taped

  • @william3231954 Yep. In fact, Mickey was actually a guitar player and wanted to play that instrument. Also, an even bigger trip was finding out that Davey was a better drummer than Mickey, but he was put out front due to his lack of height and that's how Mickey wound up as the drummer in the band.

  • I know he's an old guy I'm still in love with him.

  • Has anyone out there got this song by pp arnold ??????? if you have then please please upload it . thanks.

  • loved him

  • Saw Mike live twice (first time, I watched the whole show while standing next to Peter Tork and he was incredibly generous and friendly). Second time I was lucky enough to catch Mike outside the theatre before the show started. I simply walked up and introduced myself and he stopped to talk with me for fifteen minutes or so. Impossibly kind! Didn't know me from Adam, but 'cause I was able to talk about his work with some insight, he gave me this huge chunk of pre-show time. What class!

  • mr nesmith has the finest voice of the lot, classic folk vocals. what am i doin hangin round was my fav monkees tune

  • @TheMeleemonkey LOOVE that song!!

  • Great job Ashley, loved it!!

  • he wrote the song

  • Good job, until a couple days ago I thought that I was the only one that knew of or even heard this song, as well as roll with the flow, thanks from an old hippie for what ever it is worth, thanks.

  • Mike sings this best.

    Nez is awesome! :D

But I will forever be a Micky fan. XD Sorry Mike....

  • he was the worst of the monkeys.

  • @k77jones Actually,They were named The Monkees

  • @deer45218

this monkey really messed up linda's song.

  • cool hero & genius

  • Great tune, :)

  • Sounds a whole lot difference than the Stone Poneys version. Another underrated musician/composer.

  • @drfoxcourt Note especially the third verse Ronstadt (for obvious reasons) left out.

  • One of the best songs written in the last 50 years.

  • As fellow Texan, love his voice!! And oh my word, he is so adorable!!

  • Great song by a talented musician.

  • Mark Ronson looks alot like Mike?

  • Mike is very talented.. and i have to say also very handsome :)

  • I have already stated elsewhere, my love of Linda Ronstadt, but Mike does HIS composition justice.

  • I agree with you Emily, I was 5 and fell in love with Mike of the monkees. To the point that when my mom told me he was married, I was devistated and vowed to kill his wife. lol

  • Mike is my favorite Monkee=) So talented!

  • His vocals sound like on old school folkie like Dave Von Ronk(?) or what not from the old Greenwich scene.

  • lol nesmith lincoln....

  • great song never heard it by the author. Nice .

what a writer and singer not Linda Ronstadt but just as sweet.

  • Michael Nesmith = (grotesquely) underrated talent

  • Thanks Mike!

  • Well if Mike wrote the song and sang it first...he sings it best. Because he had the tune and stuff?

  • He was my favorite Monkeey.. and yes.. HE IS HOT!

  • to me mike was the leader of the monkees

  • Ya know, I've got to say that I like The Stone Poney's version better. However, I love Mike Nesmith's songwriting, and a lot of his other tunes. It is great to hear how this sounds the way he wrote it.

  • Great tune, but I'm afraid Linda made this song. I was a big fan of Mike and the Monkees, but this song dies if not for LR.

  • I knew he wrote this song but I never heard his version before and frankly it has to be one of the only times I ever felt the composer of a song does not do it justice. The Stone Ponys do a much better job and bring out that great Melody that Mike seems to slaughter.

  • This is a fuckin' masterpiece!!!

It makes me cry, not the lyrics but the whole song!!!

    Genius!!!

  • @NezHEAD66 Thanks for posting. I always liked the stone ponys version, but never heard this one. It is very good.

  • Dave here. I guess it's "PC" to say Mike did a good job on this version, but I much prefer Linda Ronstadt's performance. I do like Mike's "Joanne" and "Silver Moon" a lot. "Joanne" reminds me of a girl I knew in high school. A dark-haired, fair-skinned beauty named Carlene. Like a porcelain doll. Admired her from a distance.

  • Mike is and will always be my favorite Monkee! He sang the best songs!

  • Wow---nice clips of Nez there. The final shot looked like one of the Headquarters session photo with Mike, Micky and Peter sporting light beards.

  • ooooo i love him SO SO SO MUCH super hot:) and i love that sweet lil wave of hair to the side of his head and tht cute lil green hat sitting so delicatley on top of his head:) wow i feel hypnotized by him lol LOVE U ROBERT MICHAEL NESMITH!! thanks NezHEAD66 love this vid!!!

  • mike is super hot and don dumbass(kirshner) is such a meenie head and caused so much trouble, the monkees deserve to be in the rock and roll hall of fame!!!!

  • @themonkeesfan0809 While Kirshner was a power happy tyrant, one cannot ignore the fact that tings took a major dive as soon as he was dismissed. The show was cancelled, and the records stopped selling almost overnight.Had they been patient, they could have learned things from him that would have helped them to evolve into what they wanted to be.They wanted too much too soon.

  • @Syddric Kirshner was a visionary. Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, arguably was one of the best (if not one of the only) Variety' shows, dedicated to Rock, and contemporary music. ((I think it was only one of two dedicated to Rock; the other was Midnight Special). He also had Kirshner Records. If he believed in you, he'd support totally. He hung thru 4 albums by the band Kansas B4 they hit. That included the very expensive tour support, Record co's had the machine & $'s to push acts. Now, gone.

  • Not good. Great song and I do like Rondstad's version - if not her.

  • I don't hate it, exactly, but Linda Ronstandt turns this limp wheezy song into an anthem. Maybe she really COULD make a hit out of singing the telephone book.

  • who is this dude?

  • @delcomurf search for "the monkeys"

  • His Stuff was always the best Monkees Stuff..

  • It's a good song -- a very, very good song. But Linda Ronstadt heard something in it that Mike Nesmith probably didn't even hear. And she brought it out in her magnificent version, and she made the song her own. That's one definition of what it means to be a great singer.

  • Well I like Linda's version with the Stone Poney's much better.

Mike began the music video with his tv show Television Parts back in 1983-1984.

He made some beautiful music videos for that show and the rest is history.

  • this would have been a big hit for the monkees if they would of recorded it but i guess don kirshner han different ideas, the guy was a jack ass,he never gives the monkees the credit they deserve, long live mike, davy, mickey and peter!!!

  • @6547811 Mike wrote this song before the monkess came out. Mike was truly the only legit muscial talaent in the group

  • @ming746 mike is awesome but remember that peter tork was also a great talent,he was in a band with steven stills before buffalo springfield was born and he plays a kick ass banjo too!

  • i heard he deid

  • @delcomurf No, Mike Nesmith is very much alive, trust me, if he died, it would be all over the news. He's probably staying out of the public eye again, he's well known for doing that. Just like George Harrison used to do that too.

  • Lovely song but not this version. Quiet like him though...zany.

  • the picture of mike and ringo at 1:16 realy suprised me

  • so better than Ronstadt's. And I'm in love with her.

  • I didn't realise he was so good.

  • What an excellent production.

    Thank you very much.

    Joseph F

  • I like this version the best. It never sounds right when it's sung by a woman. The person singing the song is supposed to be a GUY, a guy who's a big fat jerk.

  • you can hear his sense of humor and his soul in this-awesome-I loved Elephant parts-need to search it-I need to hear Cruisin'-havent seen the new Repo Men movie=probably never will-Y'all gotta see Repo man-starring Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton-open a can of FOOD have a DRINK and enjoy it

  • This is the best version next to the original, Its awesome to hear the mans version, but i love the original just as much. Thanks for the post

  • Susanna Hoffs version is the best. Just my opinion.

  • Yes, the C&W establishment had no idea how to view Nesmith. The biggest issue was his association with the Monkees, seen by even their fans as a humurous endeavor.

C&W back then was REALLY, REALLY conservative. They worried that Nesmith would either tarnish their industry with the Monkees' "joke-band" image, or birng in a long-haired, dope-smoking element. C&W had long celebrated drinkin' and smokin' ... but NOT smokin' weed!

Easiest way to deal with the quandry was to ignore it.

  • This man writes English like he was English! Even in my heavy metal/Prog rock loving days I was listening to Nez. "The Hits Keep On a'Comin' " is a must have album. I get the feeling that the US country establishment wasn't sure about MN - he's good but there is a sense that he is parodying c&w - all those long words, the overly poetic lyrical approach. How do you get a 'didactic minister' or a 'Harmony Constant' into a c&w song? My mind still boggles at the conficence in this guy's writing.

  • I feel like this song is perfect when I'm around someone I feel this way about. I love this song!! It's my absolute favorite!!!! I also love these pictures of Mike Nesmtih!!! I'd forgotten how funny he was until I saw this!!! Where did you find such a good version of this song? All I found were scratchy sounding versions! Also, where did you get all these awesome pictures of Mike? I love the video!!! Great job!!!!

  • Check out the version by Linda Ronstadt and The Stone Poneys!

  • I like it but very different when a girl sings it cause its not cliche.

  • Wonderful!!!

  • I love this song!!! It is sooo original!!

Mike Nesmith is a hilarious person!!!

    Is the one he sang?

    Thnx for posting it!

  • THANK YOU ! Yes Mike is a true VISIONARY.....PEACE !

  • Thank You Ashley and yes that is Ringo in there, Nice...

  • wow that man's got it

  • I had those sideburns too!

  • is that ringo starr at 1:17???

  • Yes, that's Ringo... :)

  • awesome

  • Nesmith is great!

Another one of my under rated heroes

  • me too! I've always thought Mike was/ is a genius song writer.

  • I'm sorry, but I think Mike Nesmith is hot

  • mos def

  • yes

  • @EmilyBarnettGinsberg I'm hotter.

  • @mmasny that was 5 months ago. I don't like him anymore- honest.

  • @EmilyBarnettGinsberg nice to hear that :-)

  • @EmilyBarnettGinsberg

Don't be sorry.... he's the best kind of hot.

  • @EmilyBarnettGinsberg

Don't be sorry! He was! Unfortunately, now I think he looks too much like an old business man (which he is...but does he have to look like it?) than an old musician.

  • @susp1 Whose as ugly as sin? Mike? If you think Mike's ugly then you need to invest in a pair of glasses.

  • @EmilyBarnettGinsberg Don't be sorry. You're not the only one who thinks so. ;)

  • @EmilyBarnettGinsberg I agree.

  • my first crush! I was 5 years old and I got the first Monkees album for Christmas and I remember being drawn to his photo.

  • One of the best voices in country and rock. Love every single one of his compositions with the Monkees.

  • Hi someone could you tell me which Nesmith album includes this gem? thanks for posting.

  • 1972 LP

And the Hits Just Keep on Comin'

  • You can find it on his album "And the Hits Just Keep Comin' "

  • Thank you, Mr. Nesmith, for giving us Repo Man.

  • This so groovy!

  • Btw... Mike made the very first music video and is one of the founders of MTV!! He also made the VERY FIRST DVD!! Titled 'Elephant Parts'. Also his Mother is the creator of liquid paper....

    Such a talented family. :O)

  • Cat Steven's "Moon Shadow" was the first MTV video that I saw. I'm not saying it was the first, it was the first that I saw.

  • The first video wasn't actually shown on MTV... It was on Don Kirshner's Rock Show (that's going way back! :O) And if I'm not mistaken... the first MTV video ever shown was 'Video Killed the Radio Star'. :O)

  • Whatever happened to liquid paper?

  • I believe it's still sold at your local 'office depot' type stores. :O)

  • @damnitjanet1701 ... Nesmith is very talented, no question, but no, he did *not* make the very first music video or the first DVD. DVDs had been around a couple years before 'Elephant Parts' was released on DVD.

  • @RSG2006

Michael Nesmith discovered both monkeys and elephants while on a antarctic safari in the late 1800's. Chuck Norris is afraid of Michael Nesmith.

  • @Shadynevermind We should all be afraid of Mike Nesmith and pay proper homage, lest he wield his mighty Liquid Paper and erase us all from the Book of Life. Seriously.

  • @Shadynevermind Michael Nesmith accidentally invented Chuck Norris while he was working on an improved version of liquid paper. The world has never been the same since.

  • @damnitjanet1701 Not quite...DVDs didn't exist then. And videos existed LONG before, but they were called 'promo clips'. But he is considered the godfather of MTV.

  • @damnitjanet1701 :) Sorta...It was a laserdisc (12" predecessor from the 1970s) but not the fist in 1981.

The program was an HBO special and was acclaimed for it's comedy sketches, use of high tech editing and overall entertainment quality. Looks like early 'paintbox' and other techniques and they were top-notch in their day. Still impressive...Nesmith's production company, Pacific Arts continued until problems over a Ken Burns documentary that ultimately shuttered the company.

  • @damnitjanet1701 I loved Elephant Parts, I remember when he was inducted into the Music Video Hall of fame as the first inductee and his attitude at the podium was that the hole thing was silly. How can you have a music video hall of fame for a brand new medium?

  • Fantastic song!! Mike wrote this song but didn't actually 'put it out' there... He sold this one to Linda Ronstad and the Stone Ponies and she had great success! Kudos to Linda... AND Mike!!!

  • Thank you, this made my entire week..

  • I've always known that Michael is quite talented, but I had no idea just HOW important his role was in creating the original music video concept.. Didn't know he was the first one to receive a Video Grammy Award in 1982 or that he sold the idea to what later became MTV. He also pioneered country rock, wrote and sold material to other musicians and had a book published....whoa! Quite an impressive resume! Thanks for the post.

  • sounds more like Bob Dylan

  • ok, 1:17 EPIC WIN! Mike Nesmith and Ringo Starr are my fav. singers. wonderful vid!

  • AWESOME VIDEO!! Ken Burns, watch and learn !! Seriously man. Puts years of feelings into art for me. I always Loved Mike Nesmith, Davey Jones? must have been a mix up in the fan mail for that dude. This really captured his gentleness, quiet wisdom, kindness and heart. Great pacing, music, photos, simple but effective effects....I can tell a lot of care and love went into this. Though, micky was cute 'cause he was so whacky and funny in an innocent, non-self centered kind of way.

  • Love him.. he has such a nice voice

  • Comment removed

  • LOL his mom did not invent toilet paper..... it might have been liquid paper or perhaps english.... yes that was it english, but only the words not the phrases. you made me laugh.....

  • Oh, c'mon. Let's not go overboard. Mike N's mom only invented PREPOSITIONS!

    Oh yeah, and adjectives, too.

  • Hey hey hey. Mike does his song better than Linda.. And I adore Linda, who has a much better voice (!), but this is a better reading. Will wonders never cease.

  • His mom invented toilet paper. Not a lot of people know that.

  • Liquid paper ha ha not toilet. toilet paper was invented in the 14th century by the chinese.

  • The Monkees were "manufactured" in the sense that they didn't find each other and come together as a band, but were hired to do a show but were hired FOR THEIR TALENT to deliver both a hit comedy show and hit music - no mean feat. As this song shows, Mike Nesmith in particular had proven capability as a creative artist, which he especially proved again and again later. The Monkees, both while the show was on and later, were a bright spot in the history of rock.

  • With the money he inherited from his Mother's Liquid Paper fortune, he started MTV.

  • well he sarted 'pop clips' that time warner bought the rights to and changed the name to' mtv'

  • His mother invented Liquid Paper.

  • His mother invented tipex, bit more useless information for you all lol.

  • Gotta get something straight here. The Monkees were a manufactured band for TV, and were adored by teeny-bops. I was one of them. Nesmith wanted to get rid of the image when they were discontinued. He hated the music and I don't think Tork was a big fan either.

For their (except Davey) own selfish pleasure they had Jimi Hendrix open for them when they were on tour. Hendrix soon cut-out. He couldn't take the little girls screaming "Foxy Davey" when he sang "Foxy Lady".

  • Much different from the version he did in the TV show! :D lol!!

  • ...and if you ARE really a hater, then I feel sorry for you.

  • They thought no such thing... it's all propaganda put out to fool the ignorant masses... much the same way that leftist propaganda fools the ignorant into thinking the religous right are facists, when in reality, the liberals are the REAL facists. And I don't believe you are really a hater... you're just playing devil's advocate.

  • Name calling, eh? Facists. Yeah, that will surely convince the libs of the error of their ways. Speak smartly or don't speak at all.

  • How is this guy? is he still complis mentis?

  • Just to clarify... When I said that the show "tanked", what I meant is that it was cancelled... the PTB knew when to call it a day... smart guys that they were. ; )

  • Of course, they were REAL... otherwise, Bert and Bob wouldn't have picked them for the show. Their appeal is that they were always the real deal... but Kirschner was RIGHT... Did they take the money? Of COURSE they took it! So SHUT UP, ALREADY : p ; )

  • The problem with "insecure artists" is that it all becomes about THEM... but the show wasn't ALL about them... It was a collaborative effort... and it was best when treated as such.

  • "Headquarters" is a great album. You don't need to sell the Monkee's talent to me! LOL But all the other music took a BAD rap just because it was written by other artists. That was NOT fair... The writers from the Brill Building were all ENORMOUSLY talented, as well.

  • Kirschner had a CONTRACT with the producers which gave him the RIGHT to pick the songwriters and the songs. They were free to do their own thing in their OWN time but being insecure artists, they demanded COMPLETE control. Mike Nesmith is a GREAT songwriter and they are all very good artists in their own right, but when they took over the music, the show TANKED. They weren't ready (then) for that kind of control. Peter Tork has even admitted that.
