On the BMW you can tap the gear lever on upshifts and it'll cut the ignition for a flat shift, keep the the throttle open and the air moving. There's a sensor on the gear lever linkage used to figure it out.
No. Because the clutch remains engadged the whole time. BMW has labeled this option Shift Assist. Genericlly called a quick shifter. There's a sensor on the shift lever to detect when you are shifting. Normally applying pressure alone while the engine is under load won't change gears. The computer senses the gear change request and quickly cuts fuel and/or spark (depending on programming) to reduce the engine load. The trasmission will now easily move to the next higher gear. It's all seamless.
