    (in a good way)

  • James's A5 at 7:08 is total proof he still has it.

  • @lhc89 Nailing one note isn't proof he still has it, any more than being flat on another note is proof he's lost it.

  • @MoowChair what do u mean??

  • 2 missed the "like" button...

  • every single band member shows why they are the only person in music today who could fill their own shoes in dream theater, all in this one section of the song.

  • this version of the song has such a fast tempo holy shit! and they did fucking spectacular!!!!!

  • the singer goes behind johns rig and reads and studies the lyrics....since he doesnt write any of them haha

  • @ozzydarkman312James John and Mike all wrote this song

  • @MadGodful Labrie did too..

  • looooool wtf is doing the singer in the middle of those solos? hahahah

  • what happened to petrucci at 2:10? i:

  • Is James reading lyrics on the floor from 6:16 to 6:42? I already saw him doing that with Master Of Puppets and, I think that that was ok, I mean, it is not one of their songs... but forget the lyrics of Octavarium o.o Great performance anyway.

    LaBrie rockss!

  • @GreenCamel96 No, those papers on the floor are actually setlists so that James will know what lyrics to sing.

  • 5:24 probably my favorite part of the instrumental break

  • 3:13I learned how to play this part!!!!

  • @Vinocaful piano or guitar?

  • @juble3 both

  • i like how the singer just walks offstage during the badass solos

  • lol 5:07 sounds like mariokart music

  • Comment removed

  • james labrie is one of the best singers alive and if you don't think so, you should go to a dream theater show.

  • this isprobably one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. not only is it incredibly long but it's so precise in every note and everyone in the band joins in on it and it just sounds remarkable

  • Ohhhh Shit!!! 7:09 <--- THIS WAS TOTALLY GREAT!!!

  • @Joselo1693 That was a G#! :o

  • This is ART

  • owen wilson ??

  • Petrucci just fucking played all the notes now didn't he, goddamn motherfucker. Damn you petrucci, damn you and your EPIC awesomeness. How, how how how how how? the fuck does one play that live perfectly? you better fucking tell me how. LIFE DOESN'T MAKE SENSE

  • 7:08 I need clean clothes...

  • una verdadera obra de arte ... !!!!

  • one of their most creative instrumental sections!!

  • That's one of the best Dream Theater setlists I've ever seen. Too bad I couldn't go to that concert.

  • whats up with the idiotic camera

  • I think that 4:00 crap was gonna give me a seizure...

  • 7:07 was that a G5???

  • I think so. He managed to reach it on many lives, but not on the album... Well done for him. :)

I think it's even better on Score live.

  • @panzer92xx nub question, but what's a G5??

  • @BalthaxZelda a G5 is a musical note. Depending on how high or low a note it is, it is represented by a number. A G5 is the fifth higher G on the scale, a note that not everyone can reach.

  • @BalthaxZelda representa la nota 5 en una escala ... antesd e que james grite trapped inside this octavarium ... mike nombra los grados de la escala por ejemplo 1st - 2nd - 3 ... - 4 ... 5 ... - 6 ... - 7 ... and 8 ... ( octavarium )

  • @panzer92xx no man that was an A5 :)

  • @panzer92xx More like an A5 lol...

  • @RockRulez124 it was lower than an A, but higher than a G#.

  • i saw these guys last october and they blew my fuckin face off, sick band

  • lol at the Jingle Bell riff from 5:14 - 5:17.

  • Comment removed

  • where's jordan's rotating keyboard stand?

  • This is the best part of the song :D

    Rudess' synth solo = godly.

As for LaBrie, he's an amazing singer. I've seen him live even in recent years and he's always flawless

  • i blame rock band for hate on labrie. the only songs they have on there are panic attack when his singing isnt the main drive of the song. and pull me under. people youtube and find it live in 09 and are like OMG DIS SINGERS TOTALLY NOT GOODD UGGRGG.

they dont listen to labrie in his prime which was years ago. he's great now but back then holy shit

  • @RyanTF2: Constant Motion, not Pull Me Under? Unless Pull Me Under is a new addition...

Anyway, Rock Band is actually how I found Dream Theater, and right now they're one of my favorite bands.

  • pull me unders on guitar hero isnt it? but yeah the same thing goes with cm again his singing isnt what the songs about. if you've just discovered DT id reccomend listening to images and words and awake. their two greatest albums

  • Already got a bunch of albums (including Images and Words) and that one is one of my favorites, I'll be getting almost all of the others pretty soon.

  • @RyanTF2 while personally i quite like labrie, a lot of the anti-labrie hate started a long time ago. like, around scenes from a memory time, when everyone loved the technical skills of the other band members and felt that labrie was just an average singer, looking worse in comparison with the others.

just saying, its from before guitar hero was made, let alone rockband, so thats not the only reason. plus, labrie has far worse songs.

  • this feels really rushed they should have taken their time with this song instead of just rushing through it. amazing song but they need to go a little slower

  • rudess ruless

    amazing

  • James singing is underestimated, there are many examples that you can find here on youtube where his singing is great live.

  • his singing his amazing just sometimes he overdoes it, like almost wiling, i like when he's control and simple

  • Perhaps, but that I has to do with what you prefer. Although, the line between excellent and overdoing it is thin. I think. =)

  • EG: Scenes from a Memory. You could argue that it was slightly overdone, but underdoing it was not an option at that point.

Beyond This Life might seem overdone to some, but how I perceive it is that DT took a massive risk that I don't think they will try again with their "reputation" for overdoing things.

The instrumental section there intentionally goes overboard for an overlong period, because that is the consequences of our deeds which travel far: things get out of control. Daring!

  • True, but looking at it from a musician's point of view, you get caught up in the mood of the song. Sometimes you feel the intensity so much, that you just lose yourself. I agree though, when he sings with control, it's comparable to next to none.

  • @Bearthoughts I dont think people think he hasnt a good voice or that hes a bad singer, i think it may be his style.I know many people who like dream theater but cant listen to them because they dont like his 'american style pop metal singing'.Which is slightly true but he has still got an great voice.

  • @Bearthoughts definately. especially at the end of "intervals" how he changes the pace of the lines and sounds so fucking evil and sinister. gives me the chills every time

  • @Bearthoughts Unfortunately, I found more examples where it's not great.

  • @minusjason, I don't think you can find more example of poor singing than good singing.

  • damn james did awesome here

    he hit a great note

  • Trapped inside this Octavarium Yeah!

    Unforgettable tour

  • i agree that james voice is hard to like in the beginning but after a week i learned to like it and now i love it.

but i find it rly annoying when people literally SPAM shit about james on youtube. you dont like it dont ear it. or just learn to like and watch DT live, as i did 2 times

its the perfect voice for the kind of music DT makes

  • Its annoying as hell. However, on the Pull me Under 2009 video (idk where, on stage it said Download), He sounded pretty awful. But I totally agree, he is an amazing singer who fits the band perfectly.

  • They are going much faster in this 3rd part. Pretty cool.

  • - The Dance of Eternity

    - Instrumedley

    - Endless Sacrifice (the middle part is nice instrumental)

    - Octavarium (this particular part has a nice instrumental part too)

    - Erotomania

    - Stream Of Counsciousness

    - Overture 1928

    - Metropolis (it has an instrumental part)

but, pretty much every dream theater song has vocals, and then an instrumental part with insane passages and melodies and stuff.. you should listen them all

  • You forgot Ytse Jam,Hells Kitchen, the instrumental shit in A Change of Seasons and Six Degrees, infact dream theaters music is probably half if not more instrumental, if u think alot of the songs are taken up by large instrumental pieces guitar solos, keyboard solos and continuum solos.

  • Or you could check out Liquid Tension Experiment. It's an awesome instrumental band with the same instrumentalists (excluding John Myung, bass player). Maybe you'd like some of it.

I recommend all of it, but to each his own.

  • It's not that bad, actually I didn't like his voice that much in the beginning, but you will learn to like it. Try to listen to some of the more soft songs, because it seems like his voice fits there the most.

  • lol you should hear labrie when he was in his prime you'll change ur mind about him. look for a video called "the high notes of james labrie" its very good shows you what he's made of

  • i thought that at first too, it grows on you a lot tho. give it time

  • trapped inside this octavarium

    trapped inside this octavarium

    trapped inside this octavarium

    trapped inside this octavarium!!!

  • dam rudess messed up so much in the solo O_O like wtf??

  • If you've got a good ear, you can notice that the solo was faster, but Rudess did mistakes only to let their fans know that it was all live and not in playback!!!

  • Que LIXO de edição de video!

  • Nice to see more footage John Myung kicking ass. He's not featured much on DT's official DVDs but man can that guy rip it on bass.

  • i love how during the fast harmony part it flashes between john and john but really the second harmony is jordan. looks like the camera people didnt catch on to that

  • Holy mother of god - that last note James! Higher and more powerful than the Score version - wow!

  • was labrie reading off he words around 6:20

  • Comment removed

  • In Full Circle the people sing or it's my imagination?

  • Yes We were, as well as in Metropolis Pt. 1 with Petrucci's Solo

  • that huge instrumental section is usually way cleaner :|

  • It looked like Jordan was pissed @ :52-56 seconds..maybe he messed up a little..very rare though. lol

  • Jesus CHRIST.

That was at least a G5.

  • it was an A5 actually =) I can't tell for sure what the main note is, but I think it's A4, then on the last one he goes up to F5 then RAPES that A5.. Now, I'm about to go figure this out for sure, but ppl say that the recording is an F# (his first since Learning to Live) but if the song's in the key of Fminor, why would he touch an F#? maybe it's the chord they're in... Idk, that's why I said I'm about to go figure it out XD

  • That section is very "metal" sounding, and F# is a note in the F phrygian scale which is used in metal a lot, so theoretically it makes sense. But SHIT, that was an A5?

  • yup- as of a guitar/keyboard used to match the pitch, that was an A5.. Wikipedia says he only goes up to G in live performances of it... but that sir, was an A5..

as for your words on the scale- I'm not certain if this part of the song was in anything phrygian, but the Phrygian scale can be used in any key- just so u know.. just apply the same whole/half step patterns starting from a different tonic.

  • I know it can be used in other keys, what I meant was that they might have been playing in phyrgian, which in this case the tonic happened to be F. On a side note, did you go to any of the Progressive Nation 09 shows? James sounds amazing again, way better than Chaos in Motion.

  • =( sadly i couldnt afford it... good to hear though

  • i'll start with "catatonic" then.. lol. :D
