as lovely as this scene is... IT IS A LIE in the book he makes her do herself when hes not there and it gets all infected and its all horrible and stuff, and all a lot less romantic...
The character of Vermeer heats up the needle before piercing the girls earlobe......but how much would a Dutch painter in the early 17th century have known about microbiology and sterilization techniques?
This movie is totally amazing. I have watched it a couple of times and I love it. I never thought a painting could tell a story like that. I hope to reproduce it soon.
Me pregunto qué pensaría Veermer al ver esta escena, toda la película. No dudo que le hubiera gustado tener un tipo de encuentro como éste, encontrarse a Griet en su tiempo y a su lado como una fuente de inspiración perfecta. 5/5.
Man, when he pierced her like that.....is that symbolic or what? And I'm not saying this to be perverted, this is really what this scene is saying to me.
it's the closest they will ever come physically, so in a way it's the love scene of the movie. (not the screwing-in-a-dark-alley scene :))It's very symbolic, but thankfully they never actually get on each other. To their own interest (and to the interest of the story)
What is this movie about? I never got to see the whole thing...was he painting a picture of her so that some perverted old man could stare at it or something like that? lol
Griet loved Vermeer but as Vermeer is an artist he didnt really love her, just the idea or image of her on canvas. She was his muse, not object of desire.
I see it as a great explanation... but the author on the book never really tells that he doesn't love her... he was terrible jealous when other man came near her.
good point! Vermeer probably had feelings for Griet. Also, *spoiler alert* he did give her the pearls. However, i do not believe he truly loved her because he seemed to not care about what the painting could have done to her. and he seemed to have totally forgotten her after the painting was finished.
Yes, I think this is a kind of love with respect, what nowadays are very rare... It shows that he doesn't fall in love by her clothes, hair, or the style. It think because of her heart, especially because of the eyes... soooo sad
I saw this movie it was kool. My aunt looks a lot like her in the actual painting! When I saw the painting I freaked out on how much she looked like my aunt!
I'm so glad you made a video out of this scene- absolutely my favorite. I just finished the book, and had to watch the movie, and this scene--was to die for. Thank you so much!
This scene is brilliant. The only thing that's always bugged me is that as good as Scarlet is, she doesn't have the same tender, longing look in her eyes that the girl in the painting has. Instead she looks a little unsure. I guess only Vermeer's hand could bring that out in the image. Still I wish the eyes were more closer to the actual painting. Its what makes it such a beautiful image.
i watched the movie about half of it, this is seem to be the climactic part how Vermeer produced the painting of the girl with a pearl earring but i felt sorry for Vermeer's wife Catharina who was portrayed as selfish vengeful and jealous. Tracy Chevalier created a lovely story on this master painting by Johannas Vermeer.
Even if he wanted, he would never be able to kiss her. I mean, just look at where they are. In 1600 (i think) a rich man with a whole important family betraying his beloved wife with a maid? That would've been crazy and his wife would have gone mad. I can totally picture her killing the poor girl. It's an old fashioned age. =)
I too get so into history. Especially when related to Art. In Art History you have to examine the time, artist, genre and the dynamics that went on in relationships. Whether personal, religious etc. Astute analysis of the situation. Thanks. I loved Vermeer and this painting.
oh yeah, by the way. men bonked their maids all the time. most of the time, the wives kept it to themselves, even when they knew. divorce was nearly non-existant.
Hi uweetwel.."Elegant sensibilities' What a wonderful expression. Great response to the rather mundane yet Honest history lesson from Beachmaiden. Makes me feel better about all the snarky quips I leave behind. Too-shay! ;) OR is that spelled 2-che!
You do have a point there, men probablly "boinked" there maids but maybe its different when they start to show respect and fall in love? Like in this case,
I think Vermeers wife can sense that he likes Griet not just because of her beauty but, you know, cause she too sees colors in the clouds?
That's the point. He could have "bonked"(i like that word) her as much as he pleased, without having to fear any consequences. She however would have been disgraced completely and never been able to rehabilitate her good reputation. That's why he does not touch her, because he loves and more importantly, respects her. I adore that man! (more precisely: the character chevalier invented, Vermeer as an artist AND *hehe* Colin Firth)
it's very nice and the book most wonderful...but i taught that at least after all those pieces with him..i taught she was going to end up with him buq
i guess when he send her those stuff it shows that he still thinks about her and that she had an impact on her. although maybe the wife dint want to wear them earings no more!
Beacuse Griet is special, among other things she is good a painting, she knows about colours, she understands her master works, ... she is the only one in the house who can understand him.
Was this movie in the theatres? I didn't see it. Can't remember the name of the actor, but know that the woman is Scarlett Johansen. Would like to see the movie. Perhaps it is just going to come out in video?
i have read the book before i saw the movie , must i say that the book was way better because of more description and shows the aftermath of the story itself ....some things in the movie arent exactly the way things took place in the book...i suggest that one should read the book first and then watch the mvie to really understand what was going on =]
I first saw the movie and afterwards found out it´s based on a book. Now I´ve read it many times and just haven´t been able to buy the movie! this is one of the most erotic scenes i've ever seen. the sexuality it so subtle therefore very provocative. I loved the book and i loved watching the film as well, which does not happen very often.
her lips look ridiculous. does she pout through the whole film just because art historians think the open mouth in the painting would have been seen as provocative? and could the director have made the penetration metaphor any more obvious in this scene? gimme a break.
I read something about the earring. It means virtue, maybe something from the Old Testament... Nevertheless the girl in the painting looks happier than this. Definitely no photograph can achieve what Vermeer did.
I agree with Irulan800, this whole scene represents him taking her virginity away, so to speak. He "pierces" her, and then she starts to "bleed", all the while wincing in anticipatory pain. He then slightly comforts her afterwards.
The symbolism of this scene represents him taking her innocence away by piercing her ear. If they actually had sex, it would have cheapened thier relationship.
This film gives a whole new meaning to sexual tension.

I would like point out that this film's art director and set designer, light crew had done their homework.
The light and shadow are unmistakably influenced by Vermeer's paintings.
It's as though, Vermeer had painted this movie.
I was stunned by it's attention to detail.
