"He who hopes for spring with upturned eye never sees so small a thing as Draba. He who despairs of spring with downcast eye steps on it, unknowing. He who searches for spring with his knees in the mud finds it, in abundance."
When I lived a bit further north, I had a barn window that had been replaced with the highway "bicycles prohibited" sign. Why didn't I keep it! That was a mistake. Years ago, I saw a reprint of a plate illustration with 1800s "boneshaker" bicycles. By the roadside was a downhill warning sign showing the cyclist walking his tall cycle down the hill. Awesome.
Take care, Be careful, and remember, if you need a shoulder to cry on, in Iowa it's going to be a gravel one. ;) P.S. from what I can tell on the maps, you have ridden your bike across two county highpoints in the last two weeks.
I already have a route planned from Neah Bay, Wa. back to Marshalltown, Ia. Hope to geter done in the next couple of years. BTW, I was on the internet searching for info about crossing the Astoria bridge when I found your Youtube posting. You posted it just three day earlier. Been with you ever sense. Oh, one more thing, when I was in M-town last mounth I meet a guy riding from Seattle, Wa. to Raleigh NC. Don't recall the name, but he said he was a carpenter, and that his sister lives in Raleigh
@countyhp thanks a million for following me... I believe that video of the Astoria Bridge is the only one on youtube currently showing a bicycle crossing. But here's something I never mentioned. I had a monopod at the time and I intended to show the entire crossing, but somehow the camera slipped and was pointing off to the side for about 80%, and.... well I wasn't about to ride the bridge again for the shot
I was in Marshalltown over the Memorial day Holiday. Took my bike with me to get in some riding, but had wind all most the whole time we were there. Welcome to spring in the upper medwest. Still got in about 30 miles of riding. :) Although I'v lived in Ga. for 43yrs, Marshalltown is still my hometown. (Birth place). And yes, the road shoulders in iowa leave much to be desired. Best to try and pick out the so called farm to town roads. Also, for you folks who think Iowa is all flat, NOT.
@countyhp you are so right about Iowa not being flat. There are some area that are fairly flat, but there have been days where the roads look like a roller coaster ALL DAY
Ah, finally our paths crossed. Two years ago when I made my ride from Smyrna, Ga. to Marshalltown, Iowa. I came up from the southeast corner of Iowa @ Keokuk to Brooklyn, Ia. Made a left onto US 6 and on in to the town of Grinnell. I also rode the bike path on the west side of Grinnell. However, at the point you made a left (west) to go on to rock creek SP, I continued north on to the small town of Gilmen, then on to Marshallton.
Love your video of Iowa. I spent 7 years in Iowa City (College & Med School). What is your background? How are you able to spend all this time touring the States?
Thats awesome! You look great and im glad your finally hitting some good weather. Ive finally fixed my mountain bike that was in the accident. And have had the go ahead from the Dr's to hit some highways with the new cycle-cross. Ill download some videos of the trails out here for ya. One question if you have a minute? Are you holding that flip camera in your hand while your biking and we have the front view of your bike and the road your traveling. Its incredible non-shakey.
@llt32 The camera is attached to a small GorillaPod which is attached to the Bob Trailer. I just made a video demonstrating it this morning because other people are curious. I think it's because the camera, trailer and bike are all connected and it appears unshakey... glad to hear your back on your bike1
Aldo Leopold! One of my all time heroes for sure! Just a tid-bit of history for those who DON'T KNOW, Aldo Leopold lead the push along with the forest service and many concerned citizens to get over 750,000 acres set aside in the Gila National Forest (New Mexico) making it the VERY 1ST designated "Wilderness Area" on June 3, 1924. They call it the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. I hope to do a video on this wilderness area once the fire restrictions and dangers are lifted in the southwest region.
@CrazyTaileZ very cool fact...thanks. Muir, Leupold, Rachel Carson, Edward Abby...are all heros. And I love the nations Wilderness Areas. My favorite? The Sawtooth Wilderness Area in Idaho. I will say this.... I loved the Gila National Forest and I plan to go back there and do a backpacking trip
@ides84 I hate to disappoint you, but when I got to Ames, I went straight to the public library (which is very very nice) and go online to hunt for a place to camp. The closest campground was Ledges State Park about 18 miles to the west. And since the town of Boone (pop 12,000) is only 5 miles from the State Park, I just hung out in Boone. (for 3 days). I wanted to stay in Ames, but no campground
@Ebbonified its amazing to me how much I've learned. I really wish I could start this trip over with the video editing skills I've developed over the last 11 months. It's ok.... I will ride a tour every year for the next couple of years and make more!
how many miles do you cover on average per day
FUNisUnderRated 6 months ago
@FUNisUnderRated I average 60 to 80 miles per day.... I've pedaled 3 centuries on this trip.

Dave, at 7:05, your reaction to the downhill cycling sign is absolutely priceless. It touches off the episode perfectly.

@campy9sp have you ever seen a "down hill bicycle" sign? I want that sign
