Read the doctor's book, "Preaching and Preachers." He says, "The chief fault of the young preacher is to preach to the people as we would like them to be, instead of as they are." He goes on to say a further danger is assuming that all who attend church and who call themselves Christians really are. If you preach with this assumption "Your messages will always be instructional, and the evangelistic element will be neglected, perhaps almost entirely." A great fallacy!
With A.W. Tozer, MLJ was the last of the preachers after the old style, in my view. That is, the last of the Spirit sent and enabled preachers, and then He left us to ourselves. Sad, sad day.
Mrs. Lloyd-Jones wrote in one letter, "We had our first hearing of Dr Tozer last night, and I must say that was quite an experience in itself--interesting and refreshing--like nobody else and with a complete lack of the showmanship which spoils so many of the good men this side [of the Atlantic]."
Dr. Lloyd-Jones has the most useful sermons for " life experience based on truth" that I've seen, with the possible exception of his old favorite, J.C. Ryle.
I love that he said that he and his father reacted against the preaching of morality without any gospel! If only we could realize in our religious political ambitions today we have fallen into the same trap!!!
Very interesting interview. Is there more to the interview? Will all of it be uploaded eventually? I think I'm right in saying the Lloyd-Jones and Talfan Davies had a very public debate back and forth in the Welsh language periodical 'Y Traethodydd'. A friend of mine worked on a'n MPhil about Talfan Davies's though and she chronicled some of the debate.
I know why MacArthur, Piper, Washer, Packer, etc. say that Martin Lloyd Jones is the greatest bible expositor and spiritual minds of the 20th century. I have numerous books from Lloyd Jones and cherish them dearly. Please listen to his sermons from MLJ trust recordings through ONEPLACE, I do all the time, and I am spiritually blessed.
we need real preaching of the gospel like Dr jones. He was just an honest teacher who taught as it is written in the bible. How I wonder what God would say to alot of the famous contemporary preachers on judgedment day. "Away from Me".
I have seen many pictures of him, have heard recordings of his preaching, and read many of his sermons, but this is the first time I have ever seen Martyn Lloyd-Jones "live." Thank you for posting this.
Thank you to the Trust for making this video available. If it is an extract of a longer interview, I hope that it will be made available at some point in it's entirety.
And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. Revelation 14:13
