  • Why r we babbling about the fact that the man can actually sing and we can understand what he is singing. God will always see us through tough times. I do miss when things were simpler. I just can't get over that I have become so dependent on stuff, I forgot how to do something on my own. All this junk we have nowadays does everything for us. WTF? I never used to abbreviate things, and now, when I OMG, text someone, I forget how to spell something, because my jackass phone does it for me!

  • This song was really depressing for me. I think Charlie Rich did it. It has signifigance for me now, as they are foreclosing on my house soon. Thank you, Mr. Obama for turning my life into a miserable living Hell.

  • @radconserv86 Obama has nothing to do with your pathetic failures...look in the mirror ....can you see the problem looking back at you?? :)

  • @TheNYgolfer Actually, you are kind of right. If it weren't him, the foolish and ignorant voters would have elected some equally inept person. People need to wake up and smell the coffee and stop putting tax and spend Democrats in that kill the economy.

  • Great song by Merle ~ Arthur

  • December lay-offs suck.. What to do? Singing helps, I guess. We need jobs not words, promises and excuses. How long must we wait? The system is broken. It only works for the rich. The Democrats are as bad the Republicans and they lie and make false promises, like Obama. I'm voting Labor, Peace and Freedom, something new for the first time.

  • @jerzymirsky Jest duze roznice miedzy Dems and Repubs. Dems szpendowac i taxowac!! Oni nie rozumia jak ekonomiks sa.

  • Do you guys think he looks like he's confederate Calvary? I think so

  • Great f'n tune sung by my #1 all-time singer-songwriter hero. I got to meet Merle this year and he's not exactly the most affible guy around but he's still my hero. As for the guitar, it's what is known as a Tuff Dog Tele....heaviest electric guitar that I've ever picked up and totally uncomfortable to play because of the width and thickness of the neck. If someone gave me one, I'd sell it and buy a REAL tele... lol

  • been through some very hard times but a good song always helped and I miss this kind of music so much

  • Awesome song by an awesome Legend.

  • Hang in there Merle, I've got us covered.

  • Im currently laid off now,,,really sucks. Merry %$#@ Christmas!

  • This one makes me sad... Every Christmas, my it seemed my Dad would get laid off... lean times. But him and Mom always made the best of it. We had each other, and that was enough. I just imagine how hard it was for him not being able to give us what he wished. So, this Christmas, with my Mom being sick and all.... I truly pray we do make it through December....

  • This song has ALOT of meaning right now with the way things are goin in michigan

  • Man I Love This Song.!!! If We Make It Through December..??

  • I don't know if we are going to make it through December

  • Best Christmas song ever wrote!

  • I used to love this song when I was a kid... though I didn't know exactly what he was singing about. Now that I'm grown up, and I got fired a month ago, I very much relate to this song now.

  • I love me some good ole Merle!!

  • no one like merle. what a rich voice, it buzzes on an on.

  • i rember in the 80,s i got layed off 5 year in a row,s w/4kid,s it hit,s home

  • December is almost here and again im going to try to make it through it

  • what's everyone babbling about, this man knows how life is and it's true if you have kids, it's hard, but the good Lord always sees us through december.

  • @annamae499 amen to that.my grandbaby girl had a severe brain injury in october 2010,she lived an is wonderful.we just gave her a christmas that she may not forget being so young but remember some when she is older.god bless mylia june, 1.6 yrs old now

  • Merle,

Quit pacin....write one...put it all on the line.

  • @LLMorse1 Does anyone have a clue as to the name of his song that I heard once in a regularly super 50's-90's live rock and roll dance club. It was amazing, and the floor was packed with dancers (and me) before it ended. It was really a two-step song but was close to rock and roll so you could also dance apart. Please help. That is the moment (1985-1991) when I realized how talented Merle is. Hopefully the date is a clue.

  • @MyPaulHenry I forgot to mention that a band did not play it. It was between sets when the jukebox was used.

  • LIVED THIS! MADE IT THRU IT

  • I always loved his grey suit/outfit he's got going on

  • if i make it through october ..........

  • merle haggard -if we make through december,gijoe989.

  • Good to see he gave up on that piece of electric plywood.

  • @LLMorse1 You mean that custom built Telecaster style guitar that he had built to his own specifications that was so outstanding that later Fender copied it and made it into a Signature Merle Haggard Telecaster? If so, that is about $5000 worth of electric plywood and any guitar player who has ever touched one can tell you how great it is. The comment is silly to start with. Any sane person can see that he stopped playing during the verse to add effect to the words.

  • This song will always make me think of my dad.

  • Silowhore is right. Haggard would have made a wonderful addition to The Highwaymen. In fact I would have jettisoned Kris for Merle.

  • Modern artists have NO soul - these guys are the greatest

  • WHy are all these dubbed with originals recordings?

  • @MJSCountry This is not a dub! LOL. This was LIVE on the Statler Brothers show from the late 80's. This is NOTHING like the original 1974 original recording.

  • @NoSteveNoPoint - hmmm well then I stand to be corrected, but the sinc is very bad, whihc gives the illusion of dubbing,.... Of course Merl is amazing vocalist - one of thebest

  • @MJSCountry Agreed, back in the day, Merle was better LIVE in my opinion

  • @MJSCountry By original I meant studio recordings

  • I just love all Merle Haggard songs

  • Any good singer that didn't smoke? Seems to give the voice character.

  • i feell like throwin up but ima suck it up like ia man and listen to some of the greatest coutry there will ever be

  • goodoldbubba1...Well said :)

  • Great Merle I'm 16 years and i love country music

  • How do you get born with such a smooth voice.

  • when we were little we couldnt afford a tape player or cd player so dad played old records on the record player. He use to play this one on it. It was a little record with one song on each side. He sat in his chair and taight us about real music and politics. Everytime I hear this song I can't help but think of him and wish he was here to help now that i am an adult.

  • i remeber me and my dad riding through the snow and listening to this song. It gives me hope for the future

  • @tapehead004 Take the tape off your head and stick it across your mouth, knobhead.

  • @tapehead004 Fuck you

  • @TheEvilpoo Good one!

  • @tapehead004 fuck you you suck merele haggard is just a workin man like you me n the next guy to read this merele loves his daughter just like i love mine

  • @tapehead004 Do you think he was BORN a rich country singer? He had his share of hard times, even went to to jail for a while.

  • @Scottcom36 not just jail, but prison , he has come a long way from though days, and he has earned every award he's got

  • He did great once he shit on The Strangers and his wife.

  • GOOD QUESTION ABOUT THE HIGHWAYMEN!!!! I

  • Merle had a voice like melted toffee...smooth and sweet.

  • Excellent!

  • @toadstool2222 This is NOT lip sync, MORON !!! I WAS THERE

  • the guy on the begining is that don reid? (from the statler brothers)

and what is the name of this show?

  • Merle, Please use your imfluence to how get Jonny Paycheck into the country hall of Fame.

  • this man can really sing quite well i just started recently listening to him he is good

  • Merle a beg to differ with Dec is not the coldest time of year... Here in Wyoming gets a little cold in Jan. And Feb...

  • @hyded100 He means cold as a metaphor, not that its really cold as in temperature, its Christmas, and he's poor. If you've ever had loved ones you want to get nice things for,and your poor then you'd know what the song is about. Trust me,it hurts your heart.

  • way better then those new dance or fake black guy rapping music.

wtf happend to real music now all you need to do is say a word like: like a g6 they repeat it 100 times and there youve got ur song.. FUCK..

  • i have always injoyed country music and heve alweays been proud of my country in 1970 i served with the 101st airborne in vietnam i have seen men killed by morters rockets and gun fire but the crulest thing i ever saw was done by a doctor working in one of the largest hospitals in tulsa for more info please see ms bones1950

  • chevy682 - the family need you home man - construction site work is bringing home good dollars and the breadwinner to the tea table at night - every night - good for everyone. Warmest to you also mate. Graham Melb Aus

  • Great song, great vocal, but boy am I glad they stopped putting full orchestral arrangements on country songs when singers go on TV.

  • hi there redneck 02779 - my son in law is a truck man - great people doing a great job - warmest to you and yours. Graham Melb Aus

  • What the hell happened to music?

  • One of the great singer/songwritters!!

  • I truly miss voices like his, Waylon's Johnny's, Conway's and all the other legends I'm leaving out. They are the country music I grew up listening to. When talent prevailed.

  • the hag and the old possum are two of my heros

  • this song got me and my mom threw alot of christmas when my dad was on the road when he drove truck

  • @redneck02779 I under stand I used to drive truck good money but it sucks being gone all the dam time

  • It seems this should be our anthem these days. Days where willing and able people can't get a job for love nor money really stink at the holidays. I think this song does hold some hope for days in the near future.

  • @outbackredd maybe willie, but the highwaymen couldn't have survived without kris or johnny, even if they didnt get rid of anyone he still would have made a good addition

  • While I really like Merle's songs in general this one is not so good. It sounds kind of canned, or smarmy. Sorry about that, just bein' honest.

  • @cheeky577 That's fine! However he could have played this song with his armpit and he would still have better sound and more talent than half the hacks on the country radio charts!

  • @cheeky577 This is an ALL TIME classic, so your honesty is in your own brain

  • so many good things to say but his message...been there done that...with much love to my kindred spirit 04'06....with much love....and one great time on Shasta Lake.

  • love it

  • love it

  • love it

  • screw waylon jennings, merle haggard should have been part of the highwaymen

  • Well its finally January and the bills are comeing in and its cold as hell but we made it threw December

  • Old southern boys just can`t leave that gray be.

  • @bazzatheblue Merle is from California, nothing to do with the BS you posted.

  • @chucky418 you gotta ask yourself a question,do I care?Short answer, NO!

Merle could come from Mongolia as far as i am concerned.I thought california was southern anyway, they look like hillbillies and weirdo`s there..

  • Three people disliked this...didn't know three deaf people are watching videos on youtube.

  • @tjfeagin lol..

  • @williedmusic I hear yam willied... We had a rough December too.. When I saw Merle on the Kennedy thing last week, all I could do is cry... He reminds me of my Dad... R.I.P. our famiy members...

  • @tiranchula Hope 2011 brings you & yours health & happiness. I 2nd R.I.P. our family members & our friends. I play rhythm guitar ( by ear ) & sing. I sound like John R. Cash , but I don`t imitate. I`m not a Johnny Cash impersonator. But I can`t find the chords , nor do I know if I could sing " If We Make It Through December". Any ideas where I might download chords for Merle`s Classic ? Willie "D"

  • @williedmusic Wilie, I have no idea.... not being a guitar player and such, but I bet one of our fine friends here at YT can help ya out! Happy New Year to you!!!! Let's all pray that 2011 will be a good one!!!

  • @tiranchula I found it. It`s not my style ( chords especially ). I`d attempt it, usin` an instrumental cd. Probably could sing "If We Make It Through Dec.", but not rthym chord it. Thanks any way Tiranchula. Sincerely, Willie "D", Hanford, Ca. 93230, Central San Joaquin Valley. Always remember 2 late/greats; Waylon&Johnny.

  • merle's songs span decades. still as relevant today as it was when he released it. Merry Christmas everyone. God Bless you

  • I love this song and this man. I've seen him several times.Merry Chistmas to all. Peace

  • This song will always be one of my favorite Christmas songs. When I was a little girl my daddy use to sing this and I did not understand all they went through to make sure that we had Christmas. Now that I am a mom trying to make sure my kids have Christmas every year I understand. There is no sacrifice we will not make for our children. I love you daddy and miss you every day.

  • 3 people know they won't make it through December.

  • hope we make it through this one .

  • This is one of my favorite all time Christmas songs....

  • @tgramful, Umm, everybody is a "distant cousin" of everybody, so what's the point? We're more interested in Merle's song, here, than your family tree, LOL!

  • Cool! Tell 'em Doug said Hi...big fan of Cash and Haggard

  • The Haggard and Cash families are both distant cousins-in-law of my family.

  • A good one for December. I used to hear this on on 88.5 KEOM Mesquite Texas

This song is close to January by Pilot although rarely played in America was a big hit in Europe. Pilot most well known for it's Magic song.

  • Sorry, buddy Merle, unemployment checks just got cut off today, so we could afford tax breaks on the rich who won't give the workin man a job.

I come from a family of coal miners and steelworkers. It's a sad cold time for the hardest workers in America.

Bless you, Merle. The song still stands up. Gonna be a cold winter this year.

  • My Grandfather's favorite song. He was a coal miner and I remember hearing him hum this song and never understood the meaning...wow I think on the words and am so humbled.

  • i say this to my honey every year. by go we are still here..love merle...

  • how the fuck did they ever have the highwaymen without merle......honestly, i ask you?

  • great question - agreed.

  • @silowhore hell i don't know, your guess is as good as mine.wait for another to come along,,hee hee hee

  • @silowhore Yeah, they were all cut from the same cloth. Damn, they don't make 'em like this anymore.

  • Comment removed

  • @silowhore Can you please clean up your mouth!!! There's millions of decent people on here.Neither Christian,Jew nor Muslim likes this type of English. Maybe you should delete it. (Joe G.)

  • @silowhore I don't care! I am just glad he was born and made it big in country music and was ABLE to be one of the Highway Men

  • @silowhore No doubt man, he was just as much an outlaw as any of them. Especially good ole' Hollywood Kris Kristofferson.

  • @silowhore Maybe they didn't invite him because they didn't want to play second fiddle to the real #1 Mr Merle Haggard - hey don't feel bad boys.....there is no shame to being #2 when Merle is #1. Enough said.

  • @jimaroo100 hear hear

  • @silowhore A damned good question.

  • EPIC Y cant there be more country like this :P

  • Merle is one of the great ones!

  • Great song preformed by the greatest...Thanks Merl/

    Rick/ Kentucky

  • The greatest voice in country music.

  • What a fitting song in our country right now. If our country can hang on through this recession, we will be fine. Hang tight fellow Americans.

  • Heres to everybody whos lived this.... and everybody who makes it through.

  • AWWW, if "we" make through the December's of our live's, we'll be just ok!

  • I grew up listening to Merle Haggard. This song hits my heart the hardest because when I was 7 years old my daddy got layed off from the coal mines and it was actually right before Christmas. I'm 40 years old now and every time I hear that song I sit and cry because it reminds me of how hard Daddy worked to give me what he could, he worked so hard that he broke his back in the coal mines when I was 17 years old.

  • @lrl1969 my husband's pop worked in the coal mines in Bluefield, Va, he got layed off and moved to Lynchburg, Va, that's where I MET THAT COUNTY BOY, wow, it's been 44 years and we are still married, so thankful for the lay offs!! LOL

  • I remember when this came on. It was a Statler Brothers Christmas special. They had a good interview after the song talking about the "other side" of Christmas. The Statler Brothers and Merle Haggard on the same show. I was in Heaven.

  • Merle is terrific! Still sounds great!

  • If you like this and want some new age awesome country music you need to listen to The Devil Makes Three by far the best country band out there today

  • lip syncing mabye he had a cold

  • Funny how the good things in life come back with real meaning over and over again.

  • this song is right on the money , for all middle and working class ,plants moving over sea, even white collar ones, and i dont think they ll make not this dec, not ever . those jobs aint coming back , what is so ironic is ,that many folks in the south, falling for the big corporations pimps ,who scare you of big taxes coming and big gov. health care etc..., of all people it is the working and midclass and the poor class who need gov. help now, this scare talk of raising taxes , come from the rich

  • I remember my Daddy listening to this song all the time. I didn't understand it's meaning as much then as I do now.

  • cash, jennings, willie & haggard. Christ i was lucky too live in their time.

  • @scuff946 And Gene Watson. It was a magic time.

  • This song always makes me cry...my family has always been lower-middle class... and now life is harder than ever. It hits home hard.

  • California reference makes me think of Dust Bowl Okies. Love the Hag.

  • ...Got plans to be in warmer town come summertime,

  • If we make it through Obama ...The biggest freak show socialist experiment I've ever seen.

  • @WilliamRowlett Well said. I did laugh out loud

  • @WilliamRowlett

please. Clinton was a moderate republican compared to Obama. The current president favors huge companies & banking-standard focal points of republicans past & present. Stop listening to talk radio & watching FOX.

  • @tomlynch42 What makes you think I listen to talk radio & Fox? I don't. I listen to my CPA who is telling me about this and that tax increase and unexpected expenses on the horizon I need to prepare for all promulgated by the Obama administration. The message I'm getting is to stash my cash in a mattress, change my name and live in Buenos Aires.

  • My all-time favorite "Hag" song--as applicable today now as it was when it first came out.

  • MY DAD SING THIS TO ME WENT IWAS LITTLE I LOVE IT

  • with all the white collar jobs going oversea, no wonder this country is in sad state, wake up america.

  • @teymani Who cares about the "white collar" bankers and corporate asses. Look what BP "big money" did!!!! The "Blue Collar" people made america fool!!!!!

  • @faithful2musikfuall i am not talking about bankers let them go to hell iam talking about computer programers , secretaries ,clerks ,company customers service ,etc. those where preaty good jobs , they all went over seas. try to get service for your pc or phone , the one who answer is in india or romania ,yes .the blue collar made and built this country, i always said one day it will be everybody job on the line .because our gov .is on the take ,

  • back than this was song of working folks, sad to say its now a song for the middle class folks .i am for one, and its not december only,if we make through the month

  • Great!!!

  • Any many who ever had a family and lost his job knows this song.

It's a great song, not just the words, but the tune as well.

  • Thanks Allen0955. One of the greatest!

  • I am a "brother" and I think Merle Haggard is one of the greatest voices ever. If We Make It Through December touches my soul. Nobody can sing it like Merle. His voice is a gift from Heaven.

  • happy 73rd merel:) wat a great singer

  • We used to fish Lake mead when the water level was high. Me and John, Ron, and Bob. Now I'm too old to fish, the water's too low to get into Grand Wash, and this song makes me very, very sad. Haggard, I wish you could bring back the good times.

  • @arizonastrip73 :

First time I heard this song was Dec 19, 1974, i got laidoff for ten weeks. My wife and infant son were the first and foremost then. Tough times and Merle hit it on the nose!
