Intro to Photoshop Layer Masking

I'm listening on my Laptop right now.. no problem at all.. I do have built in Harman Karbon speakers though...

how the hell do i put a picture in the "layer 1"? if i drag a picture there, it just becomes as background and i have no idea what to do...
