  • You explain things in such an clear and understandable way..Huge thanks

  • i always use urie instead of platinum but im afraid i just think it sounds better because it is louder, how can i tell what ratio it should be at ect?

  • what problem u using sorry dumb ?

  • honestly this is the best compression tutorial i ever found on yout

thanks a lot for your time :)

  • Great video man, good to see a visual comparison between 'good' and 'bad' and the acknowledgement of artistic choice! What kind of stuff have you worked on?

  • I have read about automating Threshold. Why would you do that and when do you do that? Your suggestions and points can be of immense help as I found no explanation anywhere. You are just superb at explaining the complexity of compressors and I must admit I have met no body who did this this good. Thank you so much.

  • Just had the mental image of some beginner dragging the transport over the track to change the threshold.

  • wow, thank you for this

  • Wow, fantastic. I know how compression works but this will definitely help me explain it to people much more clearly! You know how to teach well sir!

  • Thank You

  • I can't thank you enough.

I had no clue how compression worked.

I'm new to recording and lost at times.

    That Really helped me !

  • Most helpful video on compression I have ever seen - Thanx a bunch !!!

  • just wana say thanx for this and all the other great tutorials u offer for FREE! great work!

  • @JaimzONeill Thanks! Always nice to hear

  • that was a great explanation

  • Even if you know the principles of compression & are able to use one this is still a great tutorial.Well done guys!

  • to di world

  • Sweet jesus, that is the best explanation I have heard about compression so far. Simple and really straightforward. Thanks very much!

  • this is good. thanks!

  • ALL CASES WATCH BOOGIE NIGHTS ERYKAH BADU

  • Thank you, very helpful tutorial.

  • thanx alot, great tutorial

  • Good tutorial! The best way to put it :)

  • Thanks to this video i finally understand the compression basics... this is the kind of stuff i need, thank you very much from Spain

  • wow nice, you cut out all the useless small talk that most people use while giving a tutorial. I usually can't focus very well, yet this was so easy to follow. thanks.

  • How the fuck can anyone dislike this? Idiots.

  • @extinkt Ha thanks for fighting our corner! If the dislikers know where you can find a better explanation for free we'd like to see it!

  • @pointblankonline I concur, I've been 'mixing' my music for years (i stress the quotation marks as i only really rough tweak before it gets sent to the studio) and I understand compression yet after 1:55 secs in I find it easier to understand them. Thank you guys.

  • @pointblankonline AMAZING STUFF, MY BROTHER!

  • @extinkt my thoughts exactly

  • @extinkt - You could make a video giving people the biggest secret to life, which would solve each and every one of their problems, and some a**hole would still come along and give it a negative. It's how very negative or pissed off people can have a sense of control over something in life.

  • @extinkt :))) hhahahahahaahah superbbbb

  • I have a lot of time for Danny J Lewis' tutorials. This man really does know what his doing.

  • nice i always wondered if i was using the compressor right

  • but what about the other settings? 1. What is knee? 2. What is peak/rms

     3. What is attack & release 4. What is side chain detection

  • @patrick99e99 Hi we examine the other compression parameters in detail on the full course (which you can find via the link in the description). This is just one of many hours worth of tutorial videos from the course.

  • nice video

  • Amazing tutorial, clearly explained, thank you

  • clearly explained , thank you!

  • I'm starting to understand the fundamentals of mix down and mastering :) thanks for a great tutorial. I hope you could make a tutorial on multiband dynamics soon (hopefully the ones in cubase), i cant really figure out how they work though they are alot like compressors.

    anyway great tutorial

  • What does the ratio do?

  • I saw a video where a well established producer said he compressed the bass highs and lows sepratly. (highs with a lot of compression, lows with less compression) the reason he said he did this was to reduce the movment/ vibration of the speaker cone. this apprantly made the bass sound clearer, less muddy, and louder. could you explain this technique further?

  • @SwitchUpBroadcast Afraid there's not really enough room to go into that in this comment section but it is exactly the type of question that students enrolled on the full Mixing Dance Music course can pose to their tutor in the private forum and weekly webchats. The tutor will always get back to you within 24hrs with an answer.

    All the best

  • @pointblankonline so you charge people to learn about an art form? wow. thats sick

  • @guineapiggyman yes we charge for our courses, much like the thousands of other art courses around... it would be impossible to run an educational establishment like ours with no money. If paying isn't your bag then there are over 200 free tutorials on this very channel for you to get stuck into so hope you are enjoying those ;)

  • great explanation man. best tutorial ive seen for this

  • well done! u did a great job with the tutorial i like the style and it was really helpful thanks alot

  • Thank you - very helpful for me understanding how to actually work with the compressor.

  • Great tutorial, I've been producing for a while now and still forget the basics sometimes!

  • Hey man, thank you very much for doing this tutorial.

I never understood compressors, i always used limiters and such.

Id be glad to see more tutorials from you :)

  • thanks man. I really appreciate the tutorial. keep it up.

  • great tutorial. It really helped me understand it.

  • Thanks very much!

  • What an insightful tutorial. Thanks, pointblankonline. :) Sometimes I spend hours and hours working on a track and I still walk away from it thinking it sounds "off" somehow, especially when I bring in strings (probably because there tends to be so many overtones and background noise in string samples). Hopefully I can use these compression tips to get a more natural and manageable sounds out of my music. Now I'm off to go experiment with it in Logic!

    Liked and favorited. :)

  • Would you agree that you should never bring your threshold down to where the compressor is reducing by 6db or more? Should you try to keep the compression to 6db or less? I heard that somewhere and it has always stuck with me. Although logic's compressor is not the greatest when compared to compressors like waves, it does give the beginner that meter at the top to see the amount of compression. Of course the argument is that we should mix with our ears.... not eyes :) Thanks for the great vid !

  • @billeyrock The thing is that it's not just the threshold - it's all of the other parameters that make the end result happen. Sure, a -6dB Gain Reduction limit could be a good rule of thumb. it would usually give more 'natural' results than if you went lower but sometimes you don't want 'natural' results. At the end of the day the clichéd saying 'if it sounds good it is good' is very relevant when it comes to compression but it's important to understand what each parameter does.Hope that helps!

  • you explained this really well big help, i which tons of videos n learn nothing thank you

  • awesome tutorial. Makes sense. I've been trying to understand a compressor for awhile.

  • great video man .. really really helpfull . thank you .

  • nice thx

  • Awesome, thanks!!

  • i'm using cubase...

what's a good compressor setting for vocals?

i've always got problems with too much differences between low and high volume sounds (sometimes as much as about 5db), and have to end up using alot of automation to sort of even them out.

will a compressor fix this or do i still have to automate?

  • thanks a lot man i had no idea how to use a compressor nor knew what it was for you helped me a bunch bro

  • you can even hear the headphones of the singer when you were showing how not to do it... im starting to understand compression now.. never really understood it untill now

  • After watching about 3-4 other good videos and after a few hours of reading material on this subject, your video is actually what tipped the scale for me sir.... Thank you for your clear and precise explanation of how Compression works; One of the best so far!!!!

  • @MrDREWPARR absolutly agree. thanks pointblankonline

  • FINALLY...someone explains compression perfectly...THANK YOU BROTHER!!!

  • oh my god....explained so well...thanks

  • the best compressor toturial i've ever seen.

  • Can someone tell me what software he is using????

Please it would be very helpful.

  • @MatisCudi This is Logic.

  • @pointblankonline Hey thanks alot bro! i had a feeling it was logic i just wanted to make sure before i payed my cash for it. what a great function. again thanks alot man.!

  • @MatisCudi its logic

  • Great Explanation. Love it. So how do you reduce the background noise ?

  • @thamboo use a gate

  • @thamboo if you set your compressor corectly and record the vocal well, there will be no need to reduce the background noise. Look how does it sound on the first set up. It sounds good.

  • Best tutorial i've seen :D

  • awesome tutorial, this guy could even get my grandma to understand compression and she don't speaki da english

  • Out standing video! I will be looking at more videos of yours! You are a great teacher

  • (good) dj's and producers are freaking geniuses

  • let me, hold you in my arms

  • REALLY REALLY good tutorial bro! You explain it so well!

  • @recordproducersrule You're a (supposed) producer and you're asking that question? Instead of asking on a youtube video, the best way is to figure it out on your own because your projects are going to be expose unique experiences and issues..there is no one setting that does the same thing for EVERY track. You need to configure them individually. Horrible question to ask dude.

  • dude i looked at many videos and still couldnt understand compression until I seen this video. Great example and demonstration!!!

  • very good tutorial! thank you so much

  • wow. you helped so much man. i never thought id understand it but you explained it extremely well. thanks!

  • best explanation on compression I ever saw cant believe how easy you made understanding comp.

  • your video is helpful alot , Thanks !

by any change can you explain more about " RATIOs" !

Keep up the good work !!!

  • @BARRATTI The first number is the input dB the second is the output dB. Say you set a ratio of 8:1, that means that it would take an increase of 8dB going in to cause the output to increase 1dB. Compressors are simple to understand as long as you see them as their intended purpose instead of trying to use them as an effect (like producers of modern metal..they go way overboard with compression. Just listen to a metal album made in the last 5 years; theres NO dynamics, just "pumping".

  • @ShivaTheAuspicious Thank you so much for your help !!

  • Killer job Danny, i am in the learning stage of Logic, however have been in the music busienss for years. Thanks again

  • thanks

  • Finally! Someone who explains compression in a simple way! Thanks alot for the video, starting to get my head around it now :)

  • WOW. That is THE best I have EVER heard Compression explained. Made SOOO much sense. Thanks a lot!

  • finally..somebody who makes sense of all of this. thanks danny

  • Very well explained

  • @DJRudyRudeness89 @Jed9133 @lumar27 All aspects of compression are covered on the Mixing Dance Music and Art of Mixing courses. You can also ask your specific questions to a pro producer in the weekly webchats and private forum.

Check out the course page for more info.

  • Hey Danny .. is there any tutorial video for compressing Kick/Bass (Low frequencies) ?

  • Hey ,I applied compression to my recorded guitar ,but when i play it ,it sound like it suddenly jumps out loud then returns back to normal volume,I think its because before there was silence then suddenly theres audio played,im thinking about fading in slowly but it might affect start of the sound.

  • Is there any order in which the effects are apply to vocals for ex: daley, reverb, Eq, compress or Vice versa.

  • what compressor are u using?

  • Great tutorial, It's starting to become a little clearer!

  • @CastleRecordz There is a link to the course in the video description above. There is also a section on the website called 'how it works'. That should answer all your questions!

    pointblankonline [dot] net/about-point-blank/how-the-school-works

    Hope that helps,

    Nick

    PB

  • @pointblankonline Aww, thanks a lot!!!

  • That unnatural sample you showed is my most common problem. I guess what I don't understand is that attack stuff. Does the Attack thing factor in a lot?

  • @CastleRecordz We examine compression in far more detail on the Mixing Dance Music course, including parameters like attack and release. The amount of attack used can make a very big difference but it really depends on what sound you are compressing. The benefit of the weekly webchats and 1-2-1 feedback videos (DVR) that our students receive, is that they can ask those sort of specific questions to a pro producer tutor and he will swiftly answer them with reference to your own work.

  • @athar077 and everyone else commenting - thanks for the comments. Glad you are finding it so useful!

  • What a great way to teach about the mystery that was compression to me for the longest time , and you solved it in 5:26 for me , thanks a million. peace

  • wow I can't believe how easy you made me understand compression that sick !! my problems mixing PADS and piano seem to be under control now !! Thank-you so much !!!

  • Would you suggest compressing the main sound of the track is there to much compression or can you use compression on all sounds as long as your aiming for natural ?

  • Great info.

  • Very simple it's perfect! Not only u showed us how it shud sound u also showed us how it wud sound when it's not done proberbly. I wish I cud of seen this video when I needed help :( thx u man amazin job! :p

  • Smart way to explain compression and dynamics. well done!

  • this video has answered one of the biggest grey areas i've had whilst teaching myself how to use cubase etc. Thank you, compression and the theory behind it now makes sense!!

    Thank you

  • @squeekybean Glad we could help. Please stay tuned for more tutorials and more informative content.

  • i tried recording electric guitar and its smooth except at the start of the track, when it begins to play ,there is a jumping sound like it suddenly jumps ,maybe its because when i hit record theres nothing and then suddenly theres rhythm being played, and when i try to use compression the sound amplifies....

  • I finally got it, haha. Thanks, thinking about taking your deep/soulful course, but I need to work on my Logic skills first! :)

  • @onkelola Glad you figured it out. Keep working at it and we'll hope to see you on the course very soon.

  • yes finally, I get what compression is. I was going about this the wrong way, thanks for the video great stuff.

  • Thanks for the very useful explanation on compression!

  • thank you

  • Are you using Studio One by Presonus?

  • @GTRman5100 das logic yo

  • hey hows it going, by the way this is a good little explanaition on compression, but with me sounding really thick i was wondering how you would determin what ratio to use, like say for drums, vocals etc...

i spose its the ratio part which isnt too clear to me, im no real expert on mastering..

    thaks in advance..

    cool vid too

    pow.......

  • @DJDARKSTEPZ Hi - You can find out about all that and much more on our mixing courses at PB online. I'm afraid we can't give away all our secrets on YouTube! Check out the Audio Mixing Course, or if you are into electronic music then the Mixing Dance Music may be the better option for you.

  • thanks this helped allot

  • what a great video

  • OUTSTANDING video. So informative and thorough, which sadly isn't common with videos like these. I've just recently began using Logic, and I had no issues understanding the content. Thanks for a great video man!

  • @TheLifeOfBrad thanks! glad you found it so useful

  • Compression-EQ or EQ-Compression? I heard different theories on this and I just wanted to see what you think about it.

  • @MrCbolden Hi, there are no hard and fast rules about the processing order. You have to trust your ears and listen to what sounds best. Some people will even eq before and after compression. A good analogy is that compressors are a bit like glue, you should only send things to the compressor that you want to be glued together. Otherwise, it can be hard to “unglue” again.

  • Hey there, i was wondering in this tutorial which compressor you used? I currently run with a combination of Sonar 8.5 sonitus compressors, and waves.. but really like the look/feel of the one you were using to describe.. would oyu mind sharing the name of it? Id greatly appreciate it.. my email is viperwav at yahoo . com.. thanks so much =)

  • Fantastic video.

  • Excellent Tutorial!! The best I have seen so far on youtube. You have really made me understand the Compresser by going into the controls and explaining them. Thank You!

  • Very nice. Loved it. Thank you.

  • Very well explained M8! congrats!

  • Wow! This is fantastic! Thank you for explaining this. I want to know MORE!

  • great tute! thanks

  • Brilliant tutorial. Very easy to understand. More please :)

  • Thank you

  • I'm new to audio engineering, should compression be used on individual tracks or on the overall mix or both? Also, what is the difference between compressors and limiters?

  • @jazzmatik a limiter is a compressor with a ratio of 10:1 or higher. u can compress an entire mix or individual trax...use ur ear...if u feel that tha track needs compress compress it.

  • I'm doing a Music Technology course, and this video explained compression better than my tutor did!

  • This would be the first video in the universe that actually explains compression. thank you!

  • This is a very clear explanation and very easy to understand. Nice one!

  • Incredible

  • PERFECT VIDEO MANNN!!!!!!

  • Damn this s so good! Can you explain some more detialed things about compression. For example what kind of compression to use on various sounds( kick, hat, snare) and what kind of compression in the master channel.

  • @KamaniKurdi - Glad it was useful to you.

We go into far more detail on the Mixing Dance Music Course... you will get over 90 tutorial videos like this one. On top of that you will be able to upload your projects each week and receive 1-2-1 video feedback from a professional producer with personalised tips on how to improve your mix.

  • Very well explained and easy to understand tutorial!

  • Great tips. Thanks!

  • TY! very helpful!!

  • Great tutorial ... well explained.

  • Thanks........ interesting video...well explained.

  • Thanks for the comments so far.

This is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to compression but absolutely vital to understand.

  • Nice work, extremely helpful! looking forward to the next one.

  • This is by faaaar the best tutorial I've seen on the compressor. Thank you so much guys! Great video!
