i always use urie instead of platinum but im afraid i just think it sounds better because it is louder, how can i tell what ratio it should be at ect?
Great video man, good to see a visual comparison between 'good' and 'bad' and the acknowledgement of artistic choice! What kind of stuff have you worked on?
I have read about automating Threshold. Why would you do that and when do you do that? Your suggestions and points can be of immense help as I found no explanation anywhere. You are just superb at explaining the complexity of compressors and I must admit I have met no body who did this this good. Thank you so much.
"The ratio is basically the strength of the compressor. The higher the ratio, the more controlled your voice sounds. This restricts the frequency increase in your peaks. For example, if you have your threshold on 10db and you create a frequency peak of 20, the ratio will determine by how much the peak should be decreased. If the ratio is 10:1, this means that your peak, instead of 20db will become 11db, increasing it only by 1, hence the ratio 10:1
wow nice, you cut out all the useless small talk that most people use while giving a tutorial. I usually can't focus very well, yet this was so easy to follow. thanks.
@pointblankonline I concur, I've been 'mixing' my music for years (i stress the quotation marks as i only really rough tweak before it gets sent to the studio) and I understand compression yet after 1:55 secs in I find it easier to understand them. Thank you guys.
@extinkt - You could make a video giving people the biggest secret to life, which would solve each and every one of their problems, and some a**hole would still come along and give it a negative. It's how very negative or pissed off people can have a sense of control over something in life.
@patrick99e99 Hi we examine the other compression parameters in detail on the full course (which you can find via the link in the description). This is just one of many hours worth of tutorial videos from the course.
I'm starting to understand the fundamentals of mix down and mastering :) thanks for a great tutorial. I hope you could make a tutorial on multiband dynamics soon (hopefully the ones in cubase), i cant really figure out how they work though they are alot like compressors.
I saw a video where a well established producer said he compressed the bass highs and lows sepratly. (highs with a lot of compression, lows with less compression) the reason he said he did this was to reduce the movment/ vibration of the speaker cone. this apprantly made the bass sound clearer, less muddy, and louder. could you explain this technique further?
@SwitchUpBroadcast Afraid there's not really enough room to go into that in this comment section but it is exactly the type of question that students enrolled on the full Mixing Dance Music course can pose to their tutor in the private forum and weekly webchats. The tutor will always get back to you within 24hrs with an answer.
@guineapiggyman yes we charge for our courses, much like the thousands of other art courses around... it would be impossible to run an educational establishment like ours with no money. If paying isn't your bag then there are over 200 free tutorials on this very channel for you to get stuck into so hope you are enjoying those ;)
What an insightful tutorial. Thanks, pointblankonline. :) Sometimes I spend hours and hours working on a track and I still walk away from it thinking it sounds "off" somehow, especially when I bring in strings (probably because there tends to be so many overtones and background noise in string samples). Hopefully I can use these compression tips to get a more natural and manageable sounds out of my music. Now I'm off to go experiment with it in Logic!
Would you agree that you should never bring your threshold down to where the compressor is reducing by 6db or more? Should you try to keep the compression to 6db or less? I heard that somewhere and it has always stuck with me. Although logic's compressor is not the greatest when compared to compressors like waves, it does give the beginner that meter at the top to see the amount of compression. Of course the argument is that we should mix with our ears.... not eyes :) Thanks for the great vid !
@billeyrock The thing is that it's not just the threshold - it's all of the other parameters that make the end result happen. Sure, a -6dB Gain Reduction limit could be a good rule of thumb. it would usually give more 'natural' results than if you went lower but sometimes you don't want 'natural' results. At the end of the day the clichéd saying 'if it sounds good it is good' is very relevant when it comes to compression but it's important to understand what each parameter does.Hope that helps!
i've always got problems with too much differences between low and high volume sounds (sometimes as much as about 5db), and have to end up using alot of automation to sort of even them out.
will a compressor fix this or do i still have to automate?
you can even hear the headphones of the singer when you were showing how not to do it... im starting to understand compression now.. never really understood it untill now
After watching about 3-4 other good videos and after a few hours of reading material on this subject, your video is actually what tipped the scale for me sir.... Thank you for your clear and precise explanation of how Compression works; One of the best so far!!!!
@pointblankonline Hey thanks alot bro! i had a feeling it was logic i just wanted to make sure before i payed my cash for it. what a great function. again thanks alot man.!
@thamboo if you set your compressor corectly and record the vocal well, there will be no need to reduce the background noise. Look how does it sound on the first set up. It sounds good.
@recordproducersrule You're a (supposed) producer and you're asking that question? Instead of asking on a youtube video, the best way is to figure it out on your own because your projects are going to be expose unique experiences and issues..there is no one setting that does the same thing for EVERY track. You need to configure them individually. Horrible question to ask dude.
@BARRATTI The first number is the input dB the second is the output dB. Say you set a ratio of 8:1, that means that it would take an increase of 8dB going in to cause the output to increase 1dB. Compressors are simple to understand as long as you see them as their intended purpose instead of trying to use them as an effect (like producers of modern metal..they go way overboard with compression. Just listen to a metal album made in the last 5 years; theres NO dynamics, just "pumping".
@DJRudyRudeness89@Jed9133@lumar27 All aspects of compression are covered on the Mixing Dance Music and Art of Mixing courses. You can also ask your specific questions to a pro producer in the weekly webchats and private forum.
Hey ,I applied compression to my recorded guitar ,but when i play it ,it sound like it suddenly jumps out loud then returns back to normal volume,I think its because before there was silence then suddenly theres audio played,im thinking about fading in slowly but it might affect start of the sound.
@CastleRecordz There is a link to the course in the video description above. There is also a section on the website called 'how it works'. That should answer all your questions!
That unnatural sample you showed is my most common problem. I guess what I don't understand is that attack stuff. Does the Attack thing factor in a lot?
@CastleRecordz We examine compression in far more detail on the Mixing Dance Music course, including parameters like attack and release. The amount of attack used can make a very big difference but it really depends on what sound you are compressing. The benefit of the weekly webchats and 1-2-1 feedback videos (DVR) that our students receive, is that they can ask those sort of specific questions to a pro producer tutor and he will swiftly answer them with reference to your own work.

hey hows it going, by the way this is a good little explanaition on compression, but with me sounding really thick i was wondering how you would determin what ratio to use, like say for drums, vocals etc...
i spose its the ratio part which isnt too clear to me, im no real expert on mastering..
@DJDARKSTEPZ Hi - You can find out about all that and much more on our mixing courses at PB online. I'm afraid we can't give away all our secrets on YouTube! Check out the Audio Mixing Course, or if you are into electronic music then the Mixing Dance Music may be the better option for you.
OUTSTANDING video. So informative and thorough, which sadly isn't common with videos like these. I've just recently began using Logic, and I had no issues understanding the content. Thanks for a great video man!
@MrCbolden Hi, there are no hard and fast rules about the processing order. You have to trust your ears and listen to what sounds best. Some people will even eq before and after compression. A good analogy is that compressors are a bit like glue, you should only send things to the compressor that you want to be glued together. Otherwise, it can be hard to “unglue” again.
Hey there, i was wondering in this tutorial which compressor you used? I currently run with a combination of Sonar 8.5 sonitus compressors, and waves.. but really like the look/feel of the one you were using to describe.. would oyu mind sharing the name of it? Id greatly appreciate it.. my email is viperwav at yahoo . com.. thanks so much =)

Excellent Tutorial!! The best I have seen so far on youtube. You have really made me understand the Compresser by going into the controls and explaining them. Thank You!
I'm new to audio engineering, should compression be used on individual tracks or on the overall mix or both? Also, what is the difference between compressors and limiters?
@jazzmatik a limiter is a compressor with a ratio of 10:1 or higher. u can compress an entire mix or individual trax...use ur ear...if u feel that tha track needs compress compress it.
Damn this s so good! Can you explain some more detialed things about compression. For example what kind of compression to use on various sounds( kick, hat, snare) and what kind of compression in the master channel.
We go into far more detail on the Mixing Dance Music Course... you will get over 90 tutorial videos like this one. On top of that you will be able to upload your projects each week and receive 1-2-1 video feedback from a professional producer with personalised tips on how to improve your mix.

OUTSTANDING video. So informative and thorough, which sadly isn't common with videos like these. I've just recently began using Logic, and I had no issues understanding the content. Thanks for a great video man!

Compression-EQ or EQ-Compression? I heard different theories on this and I just wanted to see what you think about it.
MrCbolden 1 year ago
@MrCbolden Hi, there are no hard and fast rules about the processing order. You have to trust your ears and listen to what sounds best. Some people will even eq before and after compression. A good analogy is that compressors are a bit like glue, you should only send things to the compressor that you want to be glued together. Otherwise, it can be hard to “unglue” again.

I'm new to audio engineering, should compression be used on individual tracks or on the overall mix or both? Also, what is the difference between compressors and limiters?
jazzmatik 1 year ago
@jazzmatik a limiter is a compressor with a ratio of 10:1 or higher. u can compress an entire mix or individual trax...use ur ear...if u feel that tha track needs compress compress it.
