@Cissy97 I'm amazed at the carping I find on here at Anna Netrebko's singing. All I can say is, you try to sing like that! I think she has a purity of tone that is just delightful to listen to. I've just been watching the 2011 Cardiff Singer of the Year competition, and there, amongst those chosen as the world's 20 best opera singers, there is only one to match her (Valentina Nafornita, whom I predict will be the next Netrebko).

For all the criticism I read on the Damrau pages of this scene of Netrebko, I was expecting to hear something truly terrible and yet I find an exceedingly polished performance with a GREAT interpretation. Being a spinto coloratura as apposed to the Damrau leggiero voice she takes the tempo slightly slower but delivers very admirable coloratura passages without detracting from Donizetti's music! So to the Damrau supporters that trash Netrebko, learn a bit more about WHAT you are crticising! BRAVA

I love that she has color and squillo in her voice, this is a very rare treat to have from singers who sing this rep. Many can execute this aria well technically but if the voice is vanilla and meow-y, it does absolutely nothing for me. This voice is visceral and gutsy. Although I must admit, I didn't like her Lucia at the Met at all. It was like she purposely reduced the size of her voice to one third of what I heard in her Juliette. Could be the post pregnancy hormones or whatever

This aria is not e.g. A dispetto from Tamerlano, a man's aria where to sing it right extreme agility is needed and great breath control. Regnava nel silenzio is not a very fast aria. Anna in 2003: so young and promising. Say what you want about her technique and runs, but she has the ability to convey the emotions and make her highest and most powerful notes resonate. I saw her live at the Met relatively recently, and her performance of this aria was my all time favorite moment in my opera viewing life. Thus, you can understand my disappointment seeing her, having gained at least 50 lbs after the birth of her baby Thiago.

Netrebko is a wonderful gift to opera: she is not only gorgeous but she can act which to a less musically sensitive audience is the key to enjoyment. Because of this some believe that she is only hired for her looks and ignore her rich voice, However, she still has a huge amount to learn and has to be patient with her developing voice ( I saw her at the MET in R+J - gounod and she was sharp in the 1 act). Personally I think that her voice is a little too dark for Lucia; she sounds too stable.

Interestingly, I read in a NY Times article that Anna Netrebko was in a music store a few years back and heard a singer shs didn't recognize. She was amazed by the singing - considered it "other-worldly" and felt she could never sing like that. She asked the clerk who was this incredible voice - it was Joan Sutherland.

She sings beautifully this wonferfull aria. "Regnava nel silenzio" is perfect for a lyric voice, however the complete rol is for a coloratura. The conductor is amazing too, is evident that when a singer has the support of a "singers director" (so few!!) the consecuence is fantastic, cause she feels comfortable and can shows her best.

She is also fortunate here to have a superb conductor, a real "singers's conductor," who follows her beautifully, as is the tradition in Russia.
