Took a stroll down Lombard Street SF a few weeks back, on a sunny afternoon - no sign of Steve or the fastback Mustang though. Great to hear the V8 roar again !
Thanks!!! I gotta go for a drive. I can remember, sorta, seeing this for the first time in the theater, folks were musing about the number of hubcaps right away! Still one of the best "motor music" sound tracks for a chase scene ever! McQueen taking a look back, over his shoulder, at the motorcyclist that went down sure makes a comment about the difference between people now and then. What a class act his character played! Hope I don't get a ticket! Oh well, old and over insured!
I like this one because the driving was believable. Even the ending explosion made sense, in that it wasn't the CAR that blew up, it just burned with dead jerks in it. That was the gas pumps that blew, and in a very limited, realistic fashion.
You're not gonna GET that in this day and age, ever.

Man I have seen this movie on the shelves at shops so many times I'm gonna buy it cause this scene was awesome My dream car Mustang taking on a Charger ..Classic muscle
FACT: Steve McQueen based his character on San Francisco Homicide Inspector Dave Toschi, made famous for his work on the Zodiac killings. McQueen had a copy made of Toschi's custom fast-draw shoulder holster.
2 Mustangs and 2 Chargers were used in the movie. Both Mustangs were owned by FORD. The cars were modified for the high-speed chase by veteran auto racer Max Balchowsky. Stunt coordinator Carey Loftin got Bud Ekins to drive the Mustang for the bulk of the stunts. Both of the Dodges were junked after the filming, as was one of the Mustangs. The other less banged-up Mustang was purchased by a WB employee. It ended up in NJ a few years later, where Steve McQueen tried to buy it. The owner said NO.
damn that charger looks badass. this scene is just perfectly done, i love the way the music cuts off when the chase begins and we just hear 7 or so minutes of pure raw engine power
We can nit pick it all we want, it's still a great scene. McQueen wanted to do the driving but the producers weren't going to allow that. They didn't call him the king of cool for nothing.
Yeah, Steve Mcqueen didnt do most of the driving for this chase. He did the close up shots, the rest was done by stunt drivers.Bud Ekins being better known. Still, great film.
@iknowwhereyoulive006 Wrong gun for the mission. Mustang out perform a Challenger? No. Cut down 1897 out perform many 1945 weapons, No. They had cut down BARs in the 1920s. I am not sure if Bonnie or Clyde wore the leather pants. No need for a belt fed M-60, or back blasting RPG-7.
And if Mr X had gloves, ear plugs, and put on on his seat belts, then good for him. Just have him get the right weapon for the job. And why did Mr X not have a few slugs just in case? Oh, wrong gun.
At 8:20 Mr X is stuffing low brass birdshot rounds into a sawn off 12 gauge model 1897 pump shotgun. First they had to cut the fuel lines on the Charger to give he Mustang a chance, then he gets a gun that can't penetrate a windshield. It was 1968, the CIA had all of SE Asia hip deep in more suitable weapons. Give the bad guy a cut down BAR or a M2 Carbine. Even a 9mm SMG would punch thru the Mustang's windshield.
according to wiki pedia, the chargers used were automatics, but it looked and sounded like hickman was shifting manually. also it looked like the mustang had either an open rear end or a weak limited slip, it did a peg leg burnout@ 4:18

He said the Charger suspension and underpinnings didn't need much work to withstand the hillhopping either while the Mustang suspension had to be beefed up quite a bit. All they had to do with the Charger because it was nose heavy was put some weight in the trunk to help balance it out when going airborne.
The interview with Max Baclchowsky from some years back before he passed away was very interesting. He's the man who wrenched on both these cars and prepped them for the movie. The Charger motor was left stock except for tuning. Charger blew the doors off the Mustang so bad they put headers, a Holley carb and hotter ignition on Mustang and that didn't help much. I would have thought it would have been the other way around since the Mustang was alot lighter than the Charger. Not so.
Sorry, but all of the sound effects, including the "fabulous growl" of the engines, was dubbed in later and were not made by the cars shown in this scene. That was (and is) standard practice in these types of movie scenes. It's obvious in several places that the sound does not match the action on the screen, including the fact the "sound" cars are almost constantly shifting gears in a "dramatic" fashion, even when it makes no sense given what is being shown on screen.
Something no one seems to have noticed is that the Mustang has no power steering - watch McQueen fighting the wheel when Hickman is palming the Charger around. When I stop the playback, I can identify many, sometimes most of the cars on the screen by make, year and model. Try doing that now. Modern cars are safe and economical - but look what we have lost. That's why the modern Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, Charger, and 300 are so popular - they have good old American ATTITUDE.
The Mustang was specially built by Ford, in exchange for the publicity. It had twin 289 V8 engines, mounted back-to-back and bolted together. They could generate 800+ horsepower, so this car was designed to FLY. With that kind of power, you couldn't have power steering and "country club" suspension, which the Charger was designed for. Steve was a professional car driver, and had competed at LeMans, going over 200 MPH, so he knew his stuff, FAR better than the people that make movies.
@monzacpe: Agreed, today's cars have little or no personality compared to those of the golden age of American cars... we have the g-dammed EPA and NHSTA to thank for that, i.e., the nanny staters who can't stand anyone having any fun in life. Personally, I'd accept the extra risk inherent in an older but memorable car, in return for actually enjoying driving again. Don't get me wrong, there are some "modern classics," but most now cars are bland and about as exciting as watching the grass grow.
My favorite part is at 1:55-2:00 as the Charger roars up the curving street in search of the Mustang. Power - beauty - arrogance. The '68 Charger is beautiful and exciting from any angle. I enjoyed looking at mine as much as driving it (couldn't see it from behind the wheel!) The Charger in its day was considered a much better handling car than the Mustang, based on the '60 Falcon. That heavy 390 hurt as well. The Charger's chassis was so good it was used for over 20 years in many Mopars
@monzacpe Gotta agree with you there.....When I first bought my 68,it was off the road for a couple of months while I got it roadworthy(disc brakes, balljoints etc)...I used to go down to my garage, grab a beer and just look at it....If there,s a nicer Muscle car made,I,ve yet to see it
@whiteley1989 The streets were closed. The other cars you see on the streets were driven by extras or stunt people. If you've ever seen a movie or TV program being filmed, you would know how long it takes to set up each individual shot - sometimes days - the massive amounts of support vehicles and equipment that are involved, how many people (including police and security) are present just out of view of the cameras.
@whiteley1989 wrong .....the city council would not let them shut the streets off at the start of the chase the taxi driver blocks steve from going up the road that was a real citizen yes they had stunt drivers like in the beetle but the roads were open only closed road was when they went out of the city like when the motorcyclist fell off his bike etc
To end the Charger vs. Mustang fight. The Chargers had stock 375 horse 440 engines and the stock wheels and bias ply tires. The Mustangs had 325 horse 390s, and straight pipes. The Mustang had more cameras in it and those cameras were very heavy. My dad used to drive a '72 F-100 with a 2-barrel 390 and it was stout as Hell. But anyway, it was all set up to be drug out.
@indestructableforce More cameras ,my arse.....the Mustang had to be worked(hotter cam, tweaked carb) to keep up with the stock 440,4speed R/T Charger....end of story....the only thing the Mustang had on the Charger was handling(being a smaller car)
@68bobba That was the factory performance grind cam or it wasn't much larger, as the 390 was a factory hi-po engine. But I agree it probably had a better carb. But it was set up for suspense for the movie anyway. The chase scenes were filmed at two different times with several months between. It's obviously visible that it was poorly edited, as the events aren't even in sequence with the city's layout.
in reality the dodge is quicker than a 68 mustang but that doesn`t matter.it`s a fantastic scene with some great cars.look at the mustang`s front suspension at 10:08 !!!
I was 6 when I first saw this; I was born in 1961. So you can imagine how jacked I was as a young kid watching this thrilling piece of motion picture
history. Anyway, the Mustang was HIGHLY modified--engine bored out for more performance; suspension greatly reinforced, etc. The Charger was bought COMPLETELY STOCK off a Northern California dealership and, aside from getting it's front shocks replaced with bigger ones, was left UNTOUCHED. And it's tires were thinner to let the Mustang keep up!
so you need muscle cars to make a great car chase scene? you can search for the chase from the film "the burglars" (or le casse in french) with Belmondo just to find out that you don't need them to shoot an even better car chase
Bill Hickman( the driver of the '68 Charger) also drives in a great chase scene in the movie "The seven ups" with Roy Scheider. In that chase its Bonneville vs. Ventura. Hickman also taught James Dean how drift and other stunt driving techniques.
now, can someone please help me here, firstly i am a british guy so i need to know in cc what size engines are in the mustang and the charger. thanks.
If Ford ever thinks of bringing back the Mach 1 again like they did in 03 and 04 they need to put the 390 block in it just like this fastback that Mc Queen is driving right here in this movie.
@solty48 Quite right. It is the only little niggle in the whole sequence really, but as it stretches out the chase and keeps me on the edge of my seat I look past that one very obvious clue that the chase is a product of the editing studio...
Actually I'll have to watch it again (any excuse!).
There might be another little niggle.
Aren't there some dents in one of the cars that mysteriously disappear later in the chase...?
@kcarrillox4 I'm sorry to say, that the Bullitt route is just movie magic. It jumps all over the city. You would have to drive it, in small bits and pieces. There are at least 9 separate locations in SF, for the chase scenes. Go to Google search, type in the words, Bullitt movie chase sequence mapped, proves a tough route. Click on the word Jalopnik, in bold, silver, block lettering. That should give you scene by scene descriptions of the chase sequence, in the correct chronological order.
@skybluemarshall Agreed He goes from the Marina(most up town you can go) to University and Mansell(Mclaren Park-aka the hood now) which is Pretty much right near the brisbane Sf border
@happycrap23 Almost the best sound ever. I agree is is a fabulous noise, but I prefer the sound of the three Mini Coopers being thrashed to within a few rpm of the pushrods coming through the rocker cover, in close formation as they join that Motorway outside Turin.
You've probably got to have lived with a cheeky little Mini though, to really appreciate that noise. When you hear it, you immediately know how hard they're being driven and what it feels like to be behind the steering wheel.
Good chase and what a fabulous growl from those muscle cars, particularly the Mustang. Watch out for the ubiquitous Green Beetle. Part of the chase is clearly several camera positions capturing the same piece of action, all pasted together to make a longer sequence.
And I wonder how much that stunt motorcyclist was paid...!
@TGRWorzel That was bud Ekins who also did the jump for Steve on the Great Escape. He is also was the guy driving the mustang during most of the chase scenes and all the jump scenes. I`m sure he was paid well
Took a stroll down Lombard Street SF a few weeks back, on a sunny afternoon - no sign of Steve or the fastback Mustang though. Great to hear the V8 roar again !

@monzacpe The guy that falls of the motorcycle was Bud Etkins he also did the big jump on the Great Escape,
critchley3819 5 months ago
@monzacpe Did they have escalators in 1968? In most department stores?
clarkbell 5 months ago

Dude I think most of us assume them old muscles have no power ass. steering :S?
Tait011 4 months ago
My favorite part is at 1:55-2:00 as the Charger roars up the curving street in search of the Mustang. Power - beauty - arrogance. The '68 Charger is beautiful and exciting from any angle. I enjoyed looking at mine as much as driving it (couldn't see it from behind the wheel!) The Charger in its day was considered a much better handling car than the Mustang, based on the '60 Falcon. That heavy 390 hurt as well. The Charger's chassis was so good it was used for over 20 years in many Mopars
monzacpe 5 months ago
@monzacpe Gotta agree with you there.....When I first bought my 68,it was off the road for a couple of months while I got it roadworthy(disc brakes, balljoints etc)...I used to go down to my garage, grab a beer and just look at it....If there,s a nicer Muscle car made,I,ve yet to see it

ya just got to love the fact that it was all done on unclosed streets
whiteley1989 6 months ago
@whiteley1989 The streets were closed. The other cars you see on the streets were driven by extras or stunt people. If you've ever seen a movie or TV program being filmed, you would know how long it takes to set up each individual shot - sometimes days - the massive amounts of support vehicles and equipment that are involved, how many people (including police and security) are present just out of view of the cameras.
RManBB2010 5 months ago
@whiteley1989 wrong .....the city council would not let them shut the streets off at the start of the chase the taxi driver blocks steve from going up the road that was a real citizen yes they had stunt drivers like in the beetle but the roads were open only closed road was when they went out of the city like when the motorcyclist fell off his bike etc

That is one long car chase.
jennywcarcrash 6 months ago
the Mustang had a special drivetrain; the sound is actually from a Ford GT40
brabazon10 6 months ago
To end the Charger vs. Mustang fight. The Chargers had stock 375 horse 440 engines and the stock wheels and bias ply tires. The Mustangs had 325 horse 390s, and straight pipes. The Mustang had more cameras in it and those cameras were very heavy. My dad used to drive a '72 F-100 with a 2-barrel 390 and it was stout as Hell. But anyway, it was all set up to be drug out.
indestructableforce 6 months ago
@indestructableforce More cameras ,my arse.....the Mustang had to be worked(hotter cam, tweaked carb) to keep up with the stock 440,4speed R/T Charger....end of story....the only thing the Mustang had on the Charger was handling(being a smaller car)
68bobba 5 months ago
@68bobba That was the factory performance grind cam or it wasn't much larger, as the 390 was a factory hi-po engine. But I agree it probably had a better carb. But it was set up for suspense for the movie anyway. The chase scenes were filmed at two different times with several months between. It's obviously visible that it was poorly edited, as the events aren't even in sequence with the city's layout.
indestructableforce 5 months ago
@68bobba Agreed. But, I do love both cars.
ian3754 5 months ago
You can hear the Mustang's 390 struggling throughout the entire chase, while the Charger's 440 wasn't even bothered in the slightest.
They had to detune the Charger with thin tires so the Mustang could catch up.
maxman1602 6 months ago
@maxman1602 Those sounds were dubbed, and are not the engine sounds made by the cars shown in the scene. It's a movie, not a documentary.
RManBB2010 5 months ago
sound of that mustang shifting gears is amazing
torysam544 6 months ago
in reality the dodge is quicker than a 68 mustang but that doesn`t matter.it`s a fantastic scene with some great cars.look at the mustang`s front suspension at 10:08 !!!

My pops took me to se this movie and I was hook... Thanks Gonzalo
federicocon36 6 months ago
I was 6 when I first saw this; I was born in 1961. So you can imagine how jacked I was as a young kid watching this thrilling piece of motion picture
history. Anyway, the Mustang was HIGHLY modified--engine bored out for more performance; suspension greatly reinforced, etc. The Charger was bought COMPLETELY STOCK off a Northern California dealership and, aside from getting it's front shocks replaced with bigger ones, was left UNTOUCHED. And it's tires were thinner to let the Mustang keep up!
B304A124 6 months ago
so you need muscle cars to make a great car chase scene? you can search for the chase from the film "the burglars" (or le casse in french) with Belmondo just to find out that you don't need them to shoot an even better car chase
amphitrion1182006 6 months ago
Bill Hickman( the driver of the '68 Charger) also drives in a great chase scene in the movie "The seven ups" with Roy Scheider. In that chase its Bonneville vs. Ventura. Hickman also taught James Dean how drift and other stunt driving techniques.
kd8bud 6 months ago
this scene alone is more epic than today's movies where they speak and ruin the authenticity of the chase.

now, can someone please help me here, firstly i am a british guy so i need to know in cc what size engines are in the mustang and the charger. thanks.
derek1969able 6 months ago
@derek1969able
The Mustang had a 390ci - 6400cc, and the Charger had a 440ci - 7200cc - two gigantic engines compared almost anything being sold today.

that car he was chasing was a 1968 dodge charger his mustange had to be fast to catch that car

If Ford ever thinks of bringing back the Mach 1 again like they did in 03 and 04 they need to put the 390 block in it just like this fastback that Mc Queen is driving right here in this movie.
wildwill1980 6 months ago
Honestly until today I thought Steve McQueen was a fictional character like James Bond! Is that bad or a testament to how awesome he is?
janicewatersteen 6 months ago
Fuck that mustang takes those corners so well!
solty48 6 months ago
@solty48
Only because the Charger had smaller tires to give the Mustang a chance.
maxman1602 6 months ago
If you play close attention you will notice that
4:47 , 4:55 & 5:15 are all the same scene
When the Charger at 4:47 is flying down the hill it passes a green Beatle and a white car turning out
When the Mustangs behind the Charger at 4:55 it shows it passing the Beatle and the white care turning out
And at 5:15 the Charger flys past the green Beatle whilst a white car turns out
solty48 6 months ago
@solty48 Quite right. It is the only little niggle in the whole sequence really, but as it stretches out the chase and keeps me on the edge of my seat I look past that one very obvious clue that the chase is a product of the editing studio...
Actually I'll have to watch it again (any excuse!).
There might be another little niggle.
Aren't there some dents in one of the cars that mysteriously disappear later in the chase...?

kcarrillox4 6 months ago
@kcarrillox4 I'm sorry to say, that the Bullitt route is just movie magic. It jumps all over the city. You would have to drive it, in small bits and pieces. There are at least 9 separate locations in SF, for the chase scenes. Go to Google search, type in the words, Bullitt movie chase sequence mapped, proves a tough route. Click on the word Jalopnik, in bold, silver, block lettering. That should give you scene by scene descriptions of the chase sequence, in the correct chronological order.
skybluemarshall 6 months ago
@skybluemarshall Agreed He goes from the Marina(most up town you can go) to University and Mansell(Mclaren Park-aka the hood now) which is Pretty much right near the brisbane Sf border

Listen to that beast shifting gears on 07:45....best sound ever....
happycrap23 6 months ago
@happycrap23 Almost the best sound ever. I agree is is a fabulous noise, but I prefer the sound of the three Mini Coopers being thrashed to within a few rpm of the pushrods coming through the rocker cover, in close formation as they join that Motorway outside Turin.
You've probably got to have lived with a cheeky little Mini though, to really appreciate that noise. When you hear it, you immediately know how hard they're being driven and what it feels like to be behind the steering wheel.
TGRWorzel 6 months ago
Ronin car chase still the best, 2nd Italian Job (new one).
hahahaaacum 6 months ago
Good chase and what a fabulous growl from those muscle cars, particularly the Mustang. Watch out for the ubiquitous Green Beetle. Part of the chase is clearly several camera positions capturing the same piece of action, all pasted together to make a longer sequence.
And I wonder how much that stunt motorcyclist was paid...!
TGRWorzel 6 months ago 14
@TGRWorzel That was bud Ekins who also did the jump for Steve on the Great Escape. He is also was the guy driving the mustang during most of the chase scenes and all the jump scenes. I`m sure he was paid well
