  • I'm Sorry for Stan Getz, but he was incinerated by John Coltrane

  • Before I get jumped on....HOW DID I FORGET THE HAWK!

  • Ahhh, time frame being the measuring stick...guess it depends on the generation of players you listen to..yeah, how about Ben Webster, Lester Young, and during the Trane who I simply love...there was Dexter!

  • Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, drums a d Oscar Peterson, piano All greats, to be sure.n

  • Getz so lovelely loving smile towards "Trane" during his fantastic tour on Hackensack is the finale! Getz know that he is listnening to the maestro.

  • Would like to debate but. John Coltrane!! Unbelievable! and where are Wynton Kelly? here He is missed. But Getz is still great.

  • if you notice coltrane has a mike. getz doesnt

  • @flurbaflurbs Mic where? I don't see a mic..Even if Coltrane had a mic, what difference would that have made..You can hear them both equally well..Quit looking for excuses.

  • @lestmbly Excuses for what? I never said that means anyone was better than anyone. For the record Coltrane and Getz both are some of my favorite tenor players. I was just pointing out an interesting fact. Suprisingly, Coltrane had a very tiny sound. Charles Mcpherson told me if you didn't mike him you couldn't hear him at all. Getz, however, had a sound that would fill up a room, even though not a peircing as coltranes.

  • @flurbaflurbs Man are you kidding me..Haha Trane had a tiny sound? I've heard Trane numerous times live throughout his career and believe me when I say..'there is NOTHING "tiny" about his sound'..His sound hits you in the face like a ton of bricks, from which it will take you two weeks to recover.Who mics a saxophone in order to be heard? You mic up in order to project. Trane's embrasure, power, force, and lung capacity was second to no one's and could fill a room if mic'ed or not

  • @lestmbly ok

  • lol i will help you to feel like you are in heaven

  • this is righteous!!!

  • Wow! I love both these guys for different reasons... hard to compare a melodic all star like Getz with a phrasing, chord structure all timer like Coltrane.... but I will give Getz this... it took balls of brass to play his solo after Trane was done with his. I would have put my horn down and NEVER played again!

AND the best rhythm section ever assembled! Are you kidding me? How great is that? - thanks for posting these.

  • ehm the woman of your dreams

  • @gibsaxman (2) Nah, you're not trollin' me..But let me leave you with a word of advice.

You need to calm down and take heed to the words of @Miloshevits, whom seems to be more immune to hysterics and over the top unsubstantiated statements they you.

    :? )

  • coltranes got sick phrasing but his tone gets super abrasive after awhile

  • Comment removed

  • saxybair13

  • The best gift you can give to your baby is Coltrane music from the crib!

  • This is funny. These guys are both obviously different, but lets face it, they compliment (not challenge) each other. Getz's lyrical, fluid style makes a beautiful counterpoint to Trane's frenzied emotional bursts. It's the same reason Coltrane and Davis worked so well off of each other on Kind of Blue, the obvious contrast in improvisational styles support each other and bring a new angle to the song that just couldn't happen if it was either musician by themselves.

  • wowwww... such a great beautiful piece!!! I love it. Thanks for uploading it. Hmmm....!!!! that's MUSIC!!

  • difference in tone is due to getz playing on ebonite mouthpiece (otto link by the look of it) and medium chamber rounding out the sound and trane on metal giving the brighter delivery. it's just the mechanics of it. but in terms of style whatever you prefer - both fantastic celebrate the difference!

  • This is Jazz... three distinctive voices...Coltrane, Getz, and Peterson... jamming together on a classic tune and it all works... you could learn more about what Jazz is by listening to these collaborations than in any book ever written.

Thanks for posting - a real treasure

  • 27 gutless tasteless people!

  • Estos tipos eran mágicos, impresionantes.

  • Keep in mind Stan is very lyrical and thus the more subdued sound. I adore Coltrane but both these gentlemen are in my top 5. The best!!!

  • How many other tenor players got to take their solos before Stan Getz? ...

    None.

  • Magnificent group with the rare meeting between Coltrane and Getz, with Oscar Peterson on piano to boot. Great performances!

  • No need to compare, these cat's didn't ...well..okay maybe they did, but they were the players. Trane's phrasing was being invented while playing. The man was just gone Mathematics wasn't an issue it was to make the point. Story telling. All these cat's were masters however Trane ..was..still to this day is the SR71, 426 Hemi (design of course), Bruce Lee of the Tenor. From this very second his playing even to the players is insane. Many untouchable masters Brecker, Ford, Thomas...but Trane!

  • @outersun

I always compared Elvin to an 11-1 compression 383 Stroker with a solid-lifter camshaft, full-length headers, and 2 4 bbls on a cross-ram! Coltrane was the aviation fuel!

  • God, they make it look so easy!

  • Much props to the great Oscar Peterson being able to comp with Trane. Most pianists in the 60's would have a great deal of difficulty comping for Trane and his astonishing sax playing. Even McCoy Turner would take a minute to adjust! Popular amongst the piano players in Miles' quartet was to just stop (lay out) when you couldn't keep up with the Trane xD. Oscar's playing ensures that even the classy Getz doesn't get rolled.

  • They should have made an album together

  • when was this recorded?

  • Stan is *not* 'cool', he is as much as 'cool' as Trane is 'bop'. -- What a nonsense! And to tell others they should shut up, is not the politest way. -- Just *listen*, or watch and listen.

  • @KaRidder234 well put man, I agree with you!

  • Apples and oranges!! Two different styles - Getz is "cool", Trane is bop.

Both are accomplished musicians. You young dudes lip off.

  • @wmendez07 by joker, I hope you don't mean Trane..

  • @wmendez07 trane was far from bop... it'd be more appropriate to say stan is "cool" and coltrane is "burnin"

  • trane's dope was stronger

  • that flurry has nothing to do with Trane - it's a nice, but typical, double time thing -

  • that flurry has nothing to do with Trane - it's a nice, but typical, double time thing -

  • Thumbs up if you would take Getz's beautifully lyrical solo and amazing tone over Coltrane's flurry of random notes any day(:

  • @ChadInTheBox there's nothing wrong with prefering getz, but to call coltrane's lines 'random notes' is ignorant

  • @jazzisquitegood yeah but it is random though. You obviously don't know anything about jazz. He's literally wiggling his fingers and hoping for the best.

  • @TehWinnerz to be honest, you are the one who knows nothing about jazz. your statement could not be farther from the truth- few things in this world are thought out as well as john coltrane's fast lines. EVERY note means something over the chord changes, and if you know how, i would suggest you transcribe (thats when you listen to the recording and write down the notes) just ONE of his fast lines, and then come back to this conversation with a more educated point of view. thank you

  • @nunchuckification don't fall for the popular opinion bandwagon. I transcribed some of this jokers lines once and all I can say is that I had to laugh at how stupid it was. So many wrong notes! And people like you fall for it!

  • @TehWinnerz by joker, you mean Trane?

  • @TheLiesette yes. well no. I'm just being silly.

  • @TehWinnerz i took a shit smarter than your mother.

  • @nunchuckification if you were that smart you'd learn to spot obvious internet trolling ;)

  • @TehWinnerz oh thank god hahah i was incredulous that somebody could actually dis coltrane like that and i figured i'd just go for the worst comeback i could think of lol

  • @nunchuckification heh :)

  • Sounds like Round Midnight

  • I would hate to try and compare or judge these master musicians regardless of the time period or setting. It's still good, creative jazz to me - timeless stuff - like Bix and all the jazz giants from the 20's up and into the future!

  • thumbs up if you rewound coltranes solo like 5 times

  • GOD is a black man

  • Wow!*****

  • OH MY GOD!!!! GODBLESS THESE 2 MEN

  • listen to 5:40

  • Coltrane always sounded to me like he was playing on a reed that was a little too soft and Getz always sounded to me like he was playing on a reed that was a little too hard. At least in this time period. Maybe they should've switched setups. ;^)

  • and learn:It has nothing to do with colour race and all of that.It is two human beings playing music. Both Getz and Coltrane are great.

Coltrane once said If I could have played like Getz I would have done. Now that from a fellow human being who innovated and changed the way we all look at things right.

Both tell their story their way, that is what matters. So quit comparing dig what you like and leave the rest, simple then jazz might just might have a chance.

  • The difference of tone is amazing. Getz almost sounds like he is playing a clarinet compared to Coltrane's piercing howl.

  • @zakcattack dude, he really does sound like a clarinet! wtf!

  • @codeuccino if everybody could play like Trane we would probably be leaving in a society of ubermen, shooting lasers from our eyes and solving the great mysteries of this world.

  • Two Great Horn Players...........stupid argument whos better.....just DUMB!!!

  • Who said what and influenced who is subjective...one thing for sure on this date one can see who had evolved to that point..and it was certainly Coltrane!

That said, I've heard Getz burn fiercely, but on this tune he stayed safely in his Lester

bag and gave the spotlight to Trane...

  • On his musicians card, Coltrane cited Getz and Parker as his influences. A lot of black musicians would cite white musicians to help things run smoother with racist promoters or cops, however, Coltrane often said Getz was one of his biggest influences. According to his biography, he adored Getz's 'sound'.

  • trane's first chorus is the baddest shit ever

  • Thanks to pixaninny fir the post, thanks to YouTube for existing, thanks to Monk for composing this masterpiece!!

  • I'm speechless !!!!

  • I'm always amazed whenever I see this, two of my favorite tenors and I thought Id never see them together

  • This Coltrane solo is nuts. He is insanely ridiculously brilliant as a jazz improvisation artist. C'mon guys gals I know its just blues but if you reversed the order of the sax solos you'd say Coltrane smoked the whole thing ; he was the one outstanding creative genius up there on stage/behind the mic

  • @dleestan

    "Hackensack" is not a blues.

  • Always entertaining to read stupid comments from people who know nothing, and hear nothing. So many don't know what swing is, don't know what melody is, don't understand what technique really is, etc., etc.

  • I like Apples better than Oranges.....No I like Oranges better than Apples. Just enjoy both of these masters. It's a beautiful thing that jazz can be so different and equally great.

  • Stan never got all modal- here or anywhere else. To him, jazz had to be melodious and swinging- always! If you think he had less technique than Trane- listen to "Parker 51" from his old live recordings or "It Don't Mean a Thing" with Diz & Oscar P..

  • Trane... He had a lot of notes in the head..

The best tenors for me was Dexter,Ben and Hawk.

  • getz gets punked in this, i wonder if actually knew what was about to happen

  • @aaronamccoy Good pun.

  • Dig the attempted Trane flurry by Getz @4:21..Wow he pulled it over very well but didn't have the confidence to sustain and continue the idea...Perhaps out of respect for Trane and his style? Could be a little bit of both...Getz was a fine and accomplished tenor man, but Trane will always be known as "The Master Tenor Man" of the 21st century, bar none, Sonny included..

  • @lestmbly I am quite shore Getz could pull it off. Yet, i think he did not want to sound like Coltrane... However, had he had pulled it off, still it is true that he didn't have the condition required to play like that for a whole night... oh, by the way - the spelling check here on "youtube" underlines "Getz" in red (as misspelled word) and does not underline "Coltrane"... wonder what's that all about... hahahah... I guess "The Master Man" has a special treatment, so you are right!!!

  • @lestmbly yea.... im fairly certain that stan getz could play as fast as he did for as long as he wanted.... it just didn't fit with his lyrical and mellow style. john and getz just had different styles, that doesnt mean one is better than the other.

  • @djjjamin It takes a tenor man with a lot of balls to try n' follow Trane during this time, and then trade 4's?.GEEZ..Stan did an admirable job if u can dig his pre-bop excursion a-la' Prez,Hawk,n' early Dexter. Trane was of another level of spiritual exploration n experimentation by way of the music at this phase of his career that Getz could never even dreamed of delving into. Most couldn't. It was a good move by Getz to hook up with Jobim,Byrd n the bossa-nova craze. It saved him from obscurity

  • @lestmbly great comment man, as substain coltrane is unbeatable, but the getz's frasing is great

  • @lestmbly just because someone plays faster than another player doesn't mean they have a better style...

  • @djjjamin Don't be so naive to believe that I think faster players r better then those who r slower..Coltrane had the ability to play fluently n all tempos as well as Getz.U seem to miss my point..What makes Coltrane a superior player then most is his advanced knowledge of his instrument choice and what it's capable of achieving. Also his uncanny understanding of harmony and other aspect of musical structure with the ability to apply it quickly and seamlessly to what ever it is he's expressing.

  • @djjjamin (2) Most instrumentalist including Getz have never even attempted to scratch the surface that Coltrane dedicated himself to, in mastering his instrument of choice..Sorry but it is, what it is..Don't get me wrong, I love Getz..But there is only one master and when it comes to the tenor saxophone that master is with-out a doubt John William Coltrane. All players will tell you this..He sits upon the pedestal which all others attempt to reach much in the same way of a Mozart or Hendrix.

  • Comment removed

  • @djjjamin Wow...I post a simple comment with the intent to not offend but only to intelligently express my opinion on the subject at hand; and what do I get? A jealous reply from a supposed tenor player who insults me.Son, ur attack is unwarranted n inappropriate.Seems to me u have issues that have never been resolved.U are need of help..

But u see you knew that u were wrong from the jump, otherwise u wouldn't of deleted ur reply..Allow me to re-post what u said so all can see your hypocrisy.

  • @lestmbly lololool OK master of jazz knowledge, shower me with your words so that some of your genius will rub off on me! I honestly don't care about ur points anymore im just annoyed by you. And im a tenor player dumbass, why would you assume i didn't play you don't know me! They both sound equally good to me in different ways, and i am well aware of Coltrane's knowledge of harmony. Please stop attacking ppl, i get REALLY pissed when people do it on youtube, because so many people do.

    @djjjamin

  • @djjjamin Yes son that's the bottom line with u..U're jealous cause u don't have the insights to understand or the ability expound via the written word n the manner n which I'm able too.Hey dumbass there's a reason why I got 6 thumbs-ups n the TOP COMMENT section of the page that has stood for a least a year. Where are yours?U're a frustrated hypocrite and more then likely a frustrated, can't play, tenor player. Most jazz musicians that I know of are basically COOL..You r the most UN-COOL'EST.

  • @lestmbly and u dont understand i was drunk and high

  • Comment removed

  • @lestmbly calm the fuck down dude... music is the most subjective thing in the world , for instance you think coltrane is the shit and i think brecker is twenty times more interesting to listen to since he has way more control over the horn than his predecessor but im not trolling you am i?

  • @gjbsaxman94 How can you say that Brecker had more control over the horn than Trane? They both practiced obsessively and mastered their instruments. You may find Breckers playing more interesting to listen to because you identify more with the sounds that he makes, but to say that he had any more technical facility than Coltrane is a little bit ridiculous.

  • @Miloshevits well because i hear brecker do things that in all the recordings iv heard of coltrane , he never did, or at least not to the extent that brecker did

  • @gjbsaxman94 That's because he based what he did off of what he heard Coltrane do and, rather than copying him like most sax players do, he chose to extend his ideas. He wouldn't be doing some of the things he did without the influence of Coltrane. I'm sure Coltrane would have been able to copy Brecker's lines just as easily as a lot of wannabe sax players do already.

  • Comment removed

  • @gjbsaxman Huh? Calm down? Some say I'm one of the most composed, serene, n imperturbable souls u would ever want to meet. If anyone here is showing signs of agitation it is u.So please I beg u, don't deflect ur unattractive quirks onto me. If me saying this sounds as if I'm being not calm, then so be it.

Haha..Brecker 20 times more interesting?U said it first.."music is most subjective".. therefore just cause u say something doesn't make it fact.Hey there r students, and then there are teachers.

  • @djjjamin Do yourself a favor and don't respond...I'll only expose you and embarrass you further.

Bye now and enjoy your day

    :? )

  • @lestmbly lol i love ur comments theyre hilarious

  • @lestmbly Before you make such a claim, please consider Michael Brecker. He actually survived into the 21st century.

  • Fantastic. Thanks for posting.

  • trane is a mastermind..getz is cool

  • getz is so much more tasteful and Coltrane has been so over rated with that busy overplaying-but he got popular- way too busy with bad tone.

  • @WWChrisCornellDo coltrane "busy overplaying"?? coltrane "bad tone"?

coltrane was the master of developing an idea in a solo! everything he plays is completely logical, open up your ears a bit and start transcribing what he's playing because you're missing out on a HUGE step in modern jazz

  • просто убил стена

  • Never knew they all played together ... each one superb in their own right .... this could be called one of the great concerts ever....would be interestedin knowing when and where? Thanks for the post.

  • that is a lot of talent for one stage...

  • that was sick

  • Getz sound good...

  • It is important to realise that ..............blah blah blah..............Thanks for the history lesson professor......Shut up

  • @wanekeef no reason to bash

  • @wanekeef how'd you know elhombresfbay was a college professor?

  • i think if we "just" want to listen ..dont talk about who's skill or creativity...just listening!

Getz is the sound every people die for.. and the soul from his tone is every musician seek to.. its true .. even though i am a guitarist. but no doubt coltrane is a monster!

we should seperate this two. one for sound . one for learning how you blowing the notes

.some players for feeling.some players for training.it cant be compared.

  • First time listening.... astonished... chilled... Greatest!!

  • there should be no racial comments here. Getz kicks ass and is a jazz giant. He is a player who idolized Lester Young, not a WHITE player who idolized Lester Young.

  • I love Stan Getz he's a very solid dependable soloist. But that big guy with the horn blowing in every direction represented a cosmic shift in tone and melody. John Coltrane " first new born"

  • Comment removed

  • insane

  • is that Oscar Peterson on PIANO ?

  • @authentyx

    Yes, Oscar Peterson.

  • i never understood what they mean by MODAL

  • @authentyx modal is music that works with colors (modes) as opposed to tonality and cadences

  • WOW !!!

  • It is clips like this that make me thank the heavens for YouTube!!Who knew(I guess a few people did)that these two giants had ever worked together?Imagine if Monk were on this date, playing his tune!!!

  • This is exactly how it was for me , growing up ! we would go to a picnic at a friends house and be outside all afternoon and then go inside and everyone would take out their instruments and just start jammin' man! ........., what an amazing experience., as a child, sitting in the middle this !.. my dad played piano just like this.. Frederick John Eichler

  • Lovin Trane and Getz on here, sometimes Oscar Peterson just needs to cool it a bit with the comping though.

  • ヤバい!ふたりとも大好きだ!

  • composed by thelonious monk right? the head sounds different, they ghosted a bunch of notes.

  • I Fully Agree with you he is playing his ass off(GETZ) And it is beautiful to me in every way it is lyrical and swinging hard. So many guys I know That can play put Getz Down and say he should not be even on the same band stand with Coltrane.I disagree.my statement was more about of me trying to address Coltranes approach to a standard like "lady be good" which still sounds modern 53 years later.Where to me playing like Stan like sounds "Old Fashioned".In comparison,And Is WONDERFUL ,Great,Etc.

  • lA ELEGANCIA Y SUTILEZA DE GETZ Y LA ESPECTACULAR TECNICA DE COLTRANE SOLO HACEN UNA MEZCLA PERFECTA

    MA-RA-VI-LLOSO!!!!!

  • the principle is very similar to a night in tunisia

    beautiful

  • What a great video! Stan mastered the 'cool' (Lester Young style) and Coltrane.....well, it's Coltrane!

  • oh wow wow wow

that is perfect proove why jazz is the ultimate homsexuel art form!!!

a group of tender boys doing it warm, sexy style

i'm still blushing in my older age (56 now)

No wonder that Coltrain is still our most beloved gay icon today

    thanks you!!! georgeous poasting!

    Rab Hines

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats trane wasnt gay

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats hahahaha who are you?

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats

what the hell is goin in that head of yours

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats fuck you man, no way jazz is gay. Im a jazz saxophonists and i have a girlfriend that im very much in love with

  • @kello224 your had a male girl friend, dahling, that is the trueth! jazz is SO GAY!

  • @kello224 Who gives a fuck what some random has to say. Jazz isn't gay - end of argument

  • @andifyouhadtwocoats well you got everything wrong...

  • wow that's amazing, Getz's lines can be realised after the first few measures of his solo... so good and chilly

  • Looks like someone got run over by a Trane! LOL.

Seriously, Getz sounds like Lester Young.

  • It is so good to hear - 2 amazing legendary tenors playing side by side with out the rage or intense competetion that so often harms music and jazz especially - Both are amazing - Stan Getz is for me the best ever white tenor - thats without a doubt - but u kno what colour doesnt come into music this good!!!!

    WOW

  • When Leonard Feather gave John Coltrane his application to complete to be listed in Feather's 'Encyclopedia of Jazz' Coltrane listed Stan Getz as a major influence (among others).

  • what a group!

  • Great example of two tenor giants playing great together. Doesn't always happen!!

  • This is probably one of the best two tenor combos I've ever heard. They have a perfect blend, and there's such a huge contrast between Coltrane strong and bright and Getz's dark and airy tone that it almost sounds like they're playing different instruments. And this is music, not a battle. There isn't any competition interfering with the musical expression, and Getz and Trane, together, make beautiful music. Both of their solos gave me the chills.

  • I played this song on my tenor. Lots of fun doing it the Coltrane style

  • This was during the peak of tranes sheets of sound era with all the flurries and loose ghost notes aroung the lines. So it sounds strange but is completly deliberate. Coltrane definately had serious control on his horn but Getz holds his own for sure.

  • Getz has WAY more subtle control over his instrument, whatever else one might have to say about the two of them as musicians.

  • @MediaFilter No shade to Mr. Getz, but you are loafing on that statement

  • Stan Getz JUST GOT HIS ASS SMOKED

YOU CAN SENSE THE PANIC IN HIS FACE!!!

he just don't have the ideas to float the boat

  • @stevemanss

do try not to be so thick when you're not on YT

  • What a meeting of those GREAT tenor SAXES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was in the sixties in EUROPE ....I believe

ah la la la l attaque de John COLTRANE

  • I am fucking in love with every musician in this group. I recently got a hold of this dvd and I lost at the airport.

  • train and getz:-))?

  • Peterson is sick

  • Bebop de Bombo! Yeah! Cut it up Jimmy Cobb! The rest is as we know - what's great will alway's show C'mon!

  • OMG 1:47-1:54

  • It is important to realize Stan is the greatest of the generation of "white" players who loved and idolized Lester young ,and born at a time where he naturally absorbed the difficult and complex music of Charlie Parker. What we hear is a dated and a wonderful example of a man who has the swinging singing of Lester and twist and turns and popping lines of Bop.Stan was already a well known star by 1950.Coltrane said, Getz and Stitt were big influences on him.Coltrane is explosive and burns hot.

  • @elhombresfbay

I don't know how "dated" Getz is. Sure, if you consider sounding like Young as qualifying you to be a dated player. But, I don't think there is anything dated about having a beautiful sound and playing exactly what's in your head.

  • @elhombresfbay you'r right man, Stan's playing it's unbelievably "Lester Young like".
