I agree with an earlier comment, you can't judge Rage at the Machine on the behaviour of some of there less intelligent fans.
Still, it probably was a bad choice to put Crowded House on before them (awesome as Crowded House are, the moods of the music are too different) even if Neil Finn was keen to be there.
@rarelyzippo totally agree with you. It was a bad choice by Coachella to put CH on before Rage. Still, not an excuse to get violent. I dont see why people cant realize theyre not going to hear ONLY music they know and love. Isnt that the point of going to a festival? Finding new music? At least that is what it was for me.
I still think it wouldve been better had they put WIllie Nelson on before Rage. No one would dare throw a bottle at him!
@reggaemuffin72 Ah oops I thought this was a Rage concert and CH were the opening band, my bad. The fact that it was a music festival makes it even worse!
Rat-m are a rather poor set musicians. They are too political for their own good and they inspire a group of agro testoserone fueled anarchists. Their tastes are low. It's to be expected unfortunately.
I totally agree! Nothing could ever stop Neil!!! He is a genius, and some people in the world just have to bring other people down to make them feel better about themselfs...This band is a legendary band...PERIOD.
he actually sings they dont win when its they wont win in the lyrics referring to the idiot who tried to ruin neils song. the drop kick not only is a loser but couldnt see the concept of liam carrying the song off in the crucial part of the entirity of setlist. some mothers do have them
Totally and completely classy response by the ultimate showman, Neil Finn. In more frank language, it really pisses me off that anyone would be that narrow-minded, ignorant, and plainly stupid to blatantly disregard anyone's right to express themselves musically.
I don't like certain types of music but it would never occur to me to insult, in any way, another person's means of expression. We all love and demand our freedom of speech and to demean anyone is simply inexcusable.
I think this might be the performance Neil and Nick mentioned on Andrew Denton
He didn't actually get hit in the face, but some guy took out first Neil's microphone, then Nick's. Neil's son Liam stepped in and kept the vocals going, I think you can hear him on "but you turn right over to the tv page". Poor Neil said he was in shock and on hearing Liam thought by some miracle his own voice was continuing without a mic, lol! What a great family and a great band, they handled it with dignity :D
What some people don't understand is that there different types of music out there and they may not like but other people do, people should be able to play what they want and should be able to listen to what ever they want without being fucked around!!
As only a passing fan I could name half a dozen Crowded House songs without notice. In stark contrast: Rage Against the what? Wouldn't know 'em if I fell over 'em.
I wasnt there and its a bloody good Job! whatever reason there isnt a good one to do that to anyone esp MY NEIL FINN he rocks there is no bloody need whatsoever!! :(
i would have loved to have been there, right next to that $#&^*^ who threw that. he (or she) would never have left that concert still walking under their own power. you mess with a musician as cared for as neil is and you make enemies. i may be just a girl, but i'll take you down.
Agreed, Setillia! Although I doubt it could have been thrown by a woman. Any intelligent female exposed to Neil Finn falls instantly in love. She might possibly throw her underwear, though.
@setillia you and me both! what a jerk (and i'm being kid-friendly and polite here). i would have kicked his arse from here to New Zealand and back for that. but ya gotta love Neil and the way he just goes on. he's there to make music, and he does it very well.
I mean, i can understand that the RAGE fans were excited, but i dont understand why people cant just be patient. i think it was kinda coachella's fault though to put crowded house on before rage. they shouldve put willie nelson cuz i would think more people know him and also, willie would jump in the crowd and crack a skull if someone threw something at him. haha
It was actually Crowded House's choice to go on before Rage, Neil said in an interview, that he was well aware that they would get the Rage Fans up the front wanting to see Rage...
so you couldn't really blame it on Coachella I suppose.
@ebz92 be that as it may (and i've no idea whose choice it was for Rage and Crowded House to play the same venue/same night), it is all about RESPECT. that Rage fan had absolutely no respect for another band that he might not know or like. he should have left before throwing something at Neil. Neil always handles those people very well, though. with respect, wit, and finally, "get lost"!
That Rage fan has no idea what he did!! That's Neil Bloody Finn!!
Seriously, what a poor thing to do, but Neil sure did win this. By continuing to sing and getting the crowd to sing with him!
Go NEIL!!!

What kind of a fan would show up to a gig and throw something at the singer. A drunk and drugged fan.

I like how he kind of looked away, and then looked back after they'd thrown the bottle and realised his mic was gone and was all like WTF?

I'm not a fan of RATM songs but with this incident, I think that you have to separate the band from the misbehavior of some of their fans.

@poptartjen Good comment!

@neckwatch Don't blame the band, they had nothing to do with it!

If I was Neil, I try to find that creep and kick the shit outta him but I guess the whole jail thing he'd have to deal with.

As if a bottle could take anything away from Neil's incredible level of awesome.
"The show must go on" as they say... well someone had to say it. Neil is the greatest though ^_^
