  • Remember if you do 35's with 4:56 gears you bring it back to factory settings!!! Unless you have mods... Was thinkn of 35's but I stuck with my 33's love the torque and power

  • did you have the lockers locked for this? and how are those gears on the roads? i have an 02, and about to put a 4.5 inch lift with 35's. but drive on the highway as much as i do the trails. so was just wondein.

  • @BarbarinC I don't have lockers. The Detroit Trutrac and the factory TracLok are both limited slip differentials.

  • @ChristianJames6759 Yup. If you disconnect the front sway bar, then the tires will rub a bit when fully articulated, but it's never been a problem.

  • @ChristianJames6759 I'm still running the stock Dana 35 axle, but if you're not careful, you can break it pretty easily.

  • @ChristianJames6759 They are aftermarket fenders. I don't know for sure the backspacing on the rims, but if you order from quadratec, they will make sure you get what you need.

  • @TheBrandon177 4.56 gears, the 35s don't rub unless they sways are disconnected and the suspension is fully articulated. BTW, "scrub" is an alignment issue, not a tire fitment issue.

  • 35" s are the way to go man, they fit my 97 perfect with a 4" suspension and 3" body....they give you 2 more inches than 33" tires

  • I agree that 35s are great with a 4-inch lift. However, they will only give you 1" more clearance over 33s (not 2"). I know that sounds weird, but think about it... the distance from the centerline of the axle to the ground is roughly half the diameter of the tire... so about 16.5" with 33s or about 17.5" with 35s (actually less due to sidewall flex). I know that's not a measure of ground clearance, but rather I'm just using it as a reference point for the height increase with a larger tire.

  • next tire change get 33x12.5 or whatever fits ur wheels, u need 33" tires with a 4" lift, and you should get a 2" body lift with all of that, thats what i have on my 04 wrangler, and i get better clearance and offroad abillity

  • just saying, i got the rough country 4" x series lift with 2 inch body lift added plus the 33's and i get good clearance, especially when i take off the the removable sway bar, i can really flex

  • Ok i have a 2000 wrangler sahara or whatever its got33'' tires and its lifted im pretty sure its 4'' is that good? Also wtf is a removable sway bar do i have one on my 2000? I just got it and am new to offroadin.

  • look for some kind of removable pin on the drop links (you don't actually remove the sway bar - just "disconnect it).

  • @mountainboundwbd if he gets 33s he will have less clearance at his axles which is what you need when you are going through mud, rocks, and snow. The 35s are a better choice except is that a rubicon with D44 axles? If not, your setting yourself up for breakage with your D35 rear and D30 front.

  • @Xdsin100 that isnt a ruby look in front of the door it says sport. he may have upgraded axleshafts but i do agree if those are the stock axles, you have a really good chance of snapping them doing this kind of stuff. when the rear tire dropped into that hole, that is when the axle will snap.

  • Mine rides beautifully. I used plain hydro shocks (not gas charged), and I actually get a lot of compliments from other Jeep owners on the way it rides. If you use stiffer shocks, you will have a stiffer ride.

  • Yes, gas-charged shocks are typically stiffer than plain oil shocks. As far as which to choose, it depends on the vehicle, the suspension, and your preference of comfort vs. performance. Softer shocks will be more comfy on the road, but bouncier offroad.

    You should talk to someone with the same vehicle and lift, and ask them about their ride quality and what type of shocks they have. Or call Rough Country and ask them which shocks they recommend for that particular vehicle/lift combo.

  • hey i've got the same lift w/33s and i was wondering if you have any problems with clearing 35s and i was wondering if you've got a dana 35 and if so have you broken anything in it.

  • the 35s would rub a little on the stock flares when fully articulated, but with extended flares they clear.

    Yeah, I blew up my dana 35 once, you just need to be careful.

  • That dana 35 is the main thing i worry about, its got 110k on it now so i think im gonna stick with the 33

  • heyyy im gussing your jeep is a stick. mine is a work in progress. its a 99 stock with 33 mud rovers. but im jw. while in the middle of a mud pit, is it bad to change gears? or should i jsut stay in first?

  • changing gears is not something you want to do in mud pit... changing gears make you lose power and just pushing clutch in you'll prob slow down to much to where you'll need to go back in 1st.

  • I agree that changing gears in the mud is not a great idea, but not just because of momentum. The bigger issue is that pushing in the clutch separates the clutch disk from the flywheel, allowing mud to get in between the two. This results in a loss of friction, which can cause your clutch to slip. I made this mistake, and could feel my clutch slipping for the next three or four days.

  • yeah, actually I had forgotten to put my floor plugs in after the last time I cleaned it out, so the water came right in through the open holes

  • as to the question of auto vs standard, yes standard gives you a lot of control, but for driving simplicity, the auto is the way to go, and as to wearing out autos prematurely, the only problems i have ever seen were the people who run in overdrive all the time, 1st or 2nd work fine, fluid loss from a rollover n burning it up without topping it off, but bringing extra is common sense, and drowning the truck n filling it with mud... so if you are a beginner, id say go auto,fewer actions is safer

  • If you're a beginner you probably don't know where your trans breather is located. Some autos on Wranglers have a very poor breather location. Beginners don't know that and swamp them all the time. Even experienced drivers get stuck in a bad situation sometimes. Go manual!

  • I prefer a standard because you have more control, and because they tend to last longer under hard offroad situations. But I'm sure there are arguments for autos as well.

  • Some autos have the breather right on the trans so they suck up mud/water easily. If you mud or water cross with an auto, be sure you install/relocate your breather. If not, at best you'll be flushing your trans several times. Just go manual :-)

  • You need to buy the right size tires. For example, 33x12.5x17... the last number indicates the rim size.

  • im planning on doing pretty much the exact same 4in plus 35s how big are your rims? because at the moment im running stock with 30in with 15x8 won't work for 35s?

  • My rims are 15x10s. I would not try to put that large of a tire on the stock rims. You need more backspacing so they don't rub.

  • my brothers jeep has a 2.5 inch suspention lift springs and shocks and a 3 inch body running 34's his set up works awesome and ten inch wide rims

  • thank got its closed they were over charging people i think 65 dollars a day was kinda expensive and i had 32 1150 bfg muds and he's right they do last forever on a jeep i got 33 1350 ltb's super swampers thier great offroad but not so great on the road espcially when i have a 4cyl with gears 4;56

  • Yes Dana 30 up front. I love the Truetrac. It performs very well offroad, and it's completely invisible on the road. I bought it from Quadratec. I think it was around $350, but that was a couple years ago.

  • Every winter. It goes great in the snow. Still very steerable. The Truetrac is a limited slip, so it doesn't make you slide around like a full locker in the front end would in the snow. 4.56 R&P

  • I have a stupid question...is it easier to offroad with an auto or a manual tranny? cuz i was considering buying an 89 yj with the 4.0 carbed and manual tranny but wasnt too sure...

  • A manual requires a little more skill and finesse, but I prefer it due to the added control you get with the ability to select gears. There's nothing wrong with using an auto, but if you do alot of hard offroading, you might wear it out quickly.

  • Overall, how was this trip? I'm looking into going to Rausch Creek some weekend before summer's over...Just want a little first-and account of the trails there.

    And do you have lockers on that rig? Cos that hole was deep! Nice run.

  • Rausch Creek was great. Trails range from dirt roads to a competition rock crawling course, and everything in between. Camping is primitive, no running water or electricity.

    I have a Detroit Truetrac up front and the factory Trac-Lok in the rear.

  • They're amazing. I have over 50,000 miles on them. Gonna have to change them soon, but to get that many miles on a mud tire is incredible.

  • Any good mechanic can do the gears. Lifts can usually be done by the home mechanic with a buddy or two. Whether or not you need to modify your drivelines will depend on the size of the lift. Do some research and you will find out what you need.

  • I don't actually have "lockers" by the true definition. I have limited slip differentials. The rear is the factory Trac-Lok limited slip, and the front is a Detroid Truetrac limited slip. The Truetrac is gear-driven so it should never wear out, pretty cool.

  • are you using the rough country shocks? how does the ride feel on the road

  • Yeah, I chose to go with the hydro (oil) shocks, rather than the nitros (gas-charged). They are softer and the ride is great. I've actually gotten a bunch of compliments on the ride quality.

    I installed the same lift on my buddy's jeep and we used gas charged shocks on his. He kept them for a few months, and then we ended up removing them and installing hydros instead.

  • Here is the short, short answer... A locker is a type of differential that eliminates wheelspin by forcing both tires to rotate at the same speed, regardless of traction.

    So with a traditional open differential, when you get stuck, one tire will spin, and the other will do nothing (think My Cousin Vinny). A locker will make both tires spin at the same speed.

  • awesome...i was looking at the same lift from rough country for my YJ and was wondering if i could tuck 35s without getting a body lift added to the suspension lift. That's great to hear, i drive my jeep as a daily driver so i dont really want any vibration.

  • The YJ suspension is totally different than the TJ (leafs vs. coils), so I can't say whether or not the 35s will fit. I would recommend calling the guys at Rough Country and asking them what they think. Also, I installed my same life on two other TJs for my friends, and both of them had vibe issues and ended up needing an SYE and new driveshaft. I think I just got lucky.

  • Yeah, easy. They might rub the fender flares from time to time a little at full articulation (sway bars disconnected), but it's no big deal. And no, I didn't install a SYE or new driveshaft. I was lucky to not have any vibration issues.

  • Yup, stock 4.0 engine.

  • i just got the 2.5 inch suspension 1.75 inch body lift from rough country. I wanted the 4 inch suspension but then i needed a new drive shaft and all that shit and it was just too expensive.
